What makes a Good printer for Artists and Art prints and graphical designers?
1. The ability to print on multiple media types, and art papers with different thicknesses
2. Reproduction of accurate and vivid colors
3. Preferably a printer with Pigment-based inks
4. The ability to print Deep and dark blacks, while maintaining black levels.
5. Printing sizes you would need as an artist, or graphical designer
6. Roller media if you intend on printing on canvas as an artist
7. Gallery-Quality to make sure you can sell the Prints if you wanted to
Is printer resolution important?
You would normally expect the printer resolution to have a big effect on the quality of the prints, however, it is not the case.
Most art-prints are made to be viewed from a distance, and from a distance having a little more resolution will barely even matter.
You probably wouldn’t even notice a difference in resolution If two Print-outs were hung on a wall with different resolutions. However, if you are printing stuff that is intended to be looked at from a very close distance, then the resolution may become more important for you.
Dye-Based Ink or Pigment based?
Dye-based inks printed on art papers don't look very good. They look faded and washed out compared to Pigment-based inks.
Pigment-based inks are known to be better for artists, and graphical designers as they ensure optimal color quality, and increase the longevity of the prints.
Dye-based inks are absorbed into the papers, while Pigment-based inks usually stay on the top layer without being absorbed deep into the paper.

I owned an Epson 800 and once the print head clogged I couldn't unclog it. Epson was going to charge me over $400 to replace the head and its a heavy printer to ship anywhere. I called Canon told them my story and they gave me $250 off their PR-10 and I love it. You can easily take out the print head and clean it yourself and worse case replace it with a new one. I will never own an Epson printer again! The prints are beautiful and I am glad you chose it as the #1 art printer!

awesome review! i have a couple questions, for the first 2 high end printers, which is best for black & white prints? i used to have canon printers many years ago, i’ve found that overall they’ve got a hint of blue/cold look & not rich black as i would have liked. have they improved this since? my second question, since we don’t print as often what it’s like with printer’s head? will it dry out & use a lot of inks to clean up the heads still as theirs old days printers? thanking you in advance.

There was a firmware update last year for the canon pro 1000 and you can now print up to 17"x48" with paper cut from a roll. It should be number 1 on your list.

So I'm planning to make stickers and I have everything BUT the right printer. I chosen a simple printer (Canon Pixma MG3600) and tried it out. The results...Heart wrenching 😩. No matter the res., It still comes out "washed out" and I wouldn't want to A. buy more ink for something like that and B. Sell that to consumers. My roommate had an ENVY printer which worked better than what I have now. Honestly, I just want a printer to be able to print out clean stickers and other illustrations.

Thanks for making such an in-depth video. Some of the ones listed are not available here. The ones that keeps appearing is the Canon Pro 100, which you said was dye based. :/. And the Epson Photo HD 15000, which reviewers said it was hard to set up. I'm just getting started with art prints, so I need a lower budget one. Do you have reviews for that?

I don't need anything too fancy. I need a sharp, high quality color printer that allows me to quickly make prints so I can tape them to the wall and hash out my ideas. Are there any really good LED printers and/or laser printers for artists and graphic designers? I'm leaning more towards laser than ink. I wish there was a laser printer that printed more than just four colors.

Helpful reviews, thanks! I must admit, I struggle to trust Canon printers ever since the printhead errors / defects / crippleware that affected so many Pixma printers in the last decade (error B200 and U052). An issue that Canon never owned up to or officially fixed (settling the 2015 class action lawsuit with a $75 credit doesn't count as a fix or even an apology). I'm not bitter but genuinely unsure what reassurance Canon ever offered that we can now trust their workmanship and not have to worry about such frequent breakdowns. To those who have owned and operated these newer Canon printers beyond the 1 year warranty: is our printer still going strong? Any fatal errors?

Too bad I did not get this vid two years ago, but Im happy with my brother T710w printer it gets the job done, a scanner and the quality is not bad since I do animation I scan some drawings and put them in the animation program and I never work beyond a4 size.

Before you buy an Epson, check what the image area actually is. I used to have an Epson advertised as 17x22 inch, but it would only able to print a 13x19 inch area on that bigger paper.

Great vid! Can I ask if illustrated art prints on the Epson 7750 are high enough quality to sell, as good as the pigment printers you ranked lower than the 7750? I was told the eco tanks were dye not pigment based and that dye ink prints come out less vibrant and fade faster? I’m still in the printer research stage and was more or less set on the 7750 until I learned about the ink differences and without being able to test before I buy I’m hesitating. Any information anyone has on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone I was wondering if anyone has experience/recommendations with printing stickers. I am going back and forth between a canon (not sure which one yet any recommendations) and an eco tank from epson. The eco tank will save me money due to using less ink BUT I have read/heard that the printer dies off after a couple of years ... unless I clean and keep up with it (not even sure what they mean by this tbh).

Which of these would allow me to sell my art as Giclee or Archival prints? The three main features I'm looking for are: ability to print on archival, %100 cotton or rag, acid free paper, pigment based and prints no less than 300 dpi images well. This video was so helpful! Just regarding the Epson et-7750; do you have any further details on this printer? Will it print borderless and what weight of paper will it print on? I need a printer to print vector imagery. I would like to use standard paper between 120gsm - 350gsm, not photographic paper. I need the prints to be sharp and colours to be vivid. Is this printer suitable for my needs? Thanks in advance.

Also, just regarding the Canon in 3rd place; the machine is first listed as Canon IPX8720 but then later in the video, a screenshot of the printer appears with a slightly different model code - PIXMA iP8720. Which one is correct? I have been unable to find either of these model codes but was able to find a Canon Pixma iP8750, would this be the model up?

Hello there! You might want to Check out Canon's drivers for your Mac pc! That will definitely help you connect the printer to your mac pc Here are the Drivers and software for the Canon Pro 10 en.canon-me.com/support/consumer_products/products/printers/inkjet/pixma_pro_series/pixma_pro-10.html?type=drivers&language=en&os=os%20x%2010.11%20(el%20capitan) Just select your MAC OS From the dropdown menu, And it may also automatically select it for you. Then download and install the software for the printer Then everything should work once you have the software on your mac. Or you could manually search for them. i have the pixma pro 100 but I dont think Ive done it justice. Ive been struggling to find the right paper to print my artprints on. At this point I just use it as any other home printers instead of a professional photo printer.

Okay so I have done a lot of searching and found what you need. On Epson's Italian website the maximum paper weight the ET 7750 can handle is 300 gsm So as long as you are not exceeding 300gsm you should be good. Otherwise the Canon-10 is a safer option for thicker papers and is known to print on canvas, and other thick papers. On Canon’s PRO 100 (The same as Canon 10, but Dye based option) manual they mention this: manual feed tray: From 4 to 23.6 mil (0.1 to 0.6 mm) (up to 93 lb (350 g /m)) Meaning they allow up to 350gsm on the manual feeder. So for more versatility of art papers the canon would be a good option. For More Ink, and less refilling the ET-7750 is the better choice. As long as you don’t go over 300 you should be fine with the ET-7750. And keep in mind, manufacurers will usually mention a Value Below their capability, so they are on the safe side. So you might be able to exceed their limits if you are lucky. However, The canon pro 10 is well known to handle very versatile paper. Good luck. I hope I cleared things out a little. Hey so I just wanted to give you a little of my own experience with the Epson EcoTank printer! I’ve had mine for 2 years and it works fairly well as long as I maintain it and clean it regularly. Sometimes the printer heads misalign (causing skips in the image and lines across the print job), and I have to go into settings and go through the realignment process before and/or after each print session. The colors are vivid and beautiful but I’ve struggled with the settings of the printer misreading blacks. Thick card stock goes through as long as I feed one at a time and keep it pressed along the back of the paper feeder. Overall: it has helped me print hundreds of prints, documents, and stickers, but lately the constant realignment and color skipping is making me look for an upgrade that will make my needs more efficient. When I research getting products printed by print companys they cost allot and I am looking at doing the printing myself. Thanks for making this video. Is the Cannon pro 10 best for art prints? What kind of paper would you recommend for matte prints?

I use the Pixma Pro 10 for my art prints - it's fantastic! I get my paper from Red River, they have excellent paper of all different kinds, as well as the icc profiles for each.

Hello there! It is recommended to use the Inks Provided by Epson themselves, as using other Inks could possibly damage your printer! It could be possible to use Dye Based Inks, But personally I wouldn't recommend risking it. If you want to do so, Do so at your own risk. However. Hello there! Laser printers are really good for High-speed printing, but for accurate photos, and good colors I would recommend you stay away from laser printers. They also sometimes damage some Art-papers due to the heat. But the main Issue is they won't work best with most Art-papers and for Gallery-quality Photos. If you want high-speed printing, and don't care too much about the best quality possible, then a Laser printer would be an option you would want to go for! Laser printers are also much cheaper, hence the lower quality. which makes them great for Quick and Bulk printing. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask! Have a nice day!

Laser printers are a good option for specific projects - i.e Toner transfer, so are worth considering for creating artwork on to a substrate - one of my colleagues' nieces uses one for putting her designs on to hand made furniture. My HP is a pos. I can’t find ink for it that is not some secondary questionable supplier that are shady. Come spring I’m going to drop it on the driveway. Useless.

the print for me is pretty decent BUT OMFG hp inks are just too expensive and so small (well atleast on my version of one of their printers) i had to constantly buy new cartridges and had to find them in different places everytime, also the amount of waste just from the cartridge box is insane and so is the throwing of the dried up/finished ones AND TRIED EVERYTHING BUT I JUST CAN’T SEEM TO REFILL THEM. Okay das all lmaoo

heaven-leigh dakartis I think it really just depends on the paper. I’m still looking into it, but I think that if you were to use one of these high-quality printers with the specific heat transfer paper, the print would be high quality because of the actual printer and not the paper.
