when people understood that he wasnt talking about a lost love from his teen years but a being that he has never seen, his Lord the one who created the feelings and emotions he had during the time he sang this qawwali. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani 🇵🇰 "Qawali" Singer. He had died in 1997 but still loved by millions & millions across South Asia and the world (where Urdu/Hindi/Punjabi is understood).
In Sufi mysticism (from Rumi to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and so many others) the “beloved” is God, and the seeker (human being) is forever seeking re/union. Try reading Rumi again with that lens and the other metaphors open up.

It is in punjabi launguage spoken in punjab province of India. And it is also spoken in rural areas of punjab in pakistan. I have heard that it is considered to be a crude language by the affluent and city based dwellers of pakistani punjab and children are desisted from speaking it unlike in India's Punjab.

I first knew about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the mid 1980s, when I saw him on an Asian cultural UK television show called Network East. I've loved him ever since. What a wonderful experience it must have been to see him and his group perform live. I really love this song.... it takes me out of my body and onto a higher level. Beautiful and hypnotic. It's called akhian udeekdiyan. There are many live versions of this song on Spotify, Apple music etc. So far I haven't found this exact live version but the others are also very good.

I got to see Nusrat live twice the year before he died, once at the House of Blues in Hollywood with maybe 200 people, and again at a 7000 seat venue with mostly a Pakistani and Indian crowd, with ushers fruitlessly trying to keep people from dancing in the aisles.
