Texas Rockabilly band Sid King & The Five Strings live on the Ozark Jubilee. They were one of the first Rockabilly bands and Sid and his brother Billy (guitar) is still performing today.
I was playing a gig in a bar in Barcelona at the end of the 90's. My band were playing 'Let Er Roll' By Sid King & the Five Strings and in Walked Sid King and his Brother Billy. I kid you not!! They got on stage and did a few songs with us. Surreal
Check out Buddy Merrill on Lawrence Welk. Don't know the date of the show, but it's early fifties, likely 1954, the year the Strat came out. Leo Fender gave Buddy a Strat to play and promote. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dJXjV6UY9lc.html and one of the best performances on Welk's show was Buddy and Neil Levang playing San Antonio Rose ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YJoPHbGBiDE.html and Buddy on a Jazzmaster ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-so5jgB5SKkw.html
My youngest son was about 5 when he said rockabilly was his favorite kind of music. When I asked why, he said, "it makes you wanna set something on FIRE!"
@@mathewhale3581 he showed some talent on the drums, but after a few months of lessons we gave up. He can play a wide-open tempo really well, but has zero ability to slow the beat down. Every song is either 'Ace of Spades' speed, or nothing LOL. Now 12, he wants to learn guitar.
I used to organise rockabilly and 50 music concerts from the late 80 till the early 2000 in Lyon France. I used to have a small festival in peage du roussillon south of Lyon. I had many european bands plus original artists such as Ronnie Dawson, Ray Campi,Don and Dewey, Sonny burgess, Hayden Thompson, Sid and Billy....all of them gave us great performances and all of them were very nice guys. Nice times and nice memories. I remember Sonny burgess gaving me some money back when he realised that i lost some money as we did not break even. Very nice of him.THANKS TO THEM AND THANKS TO THE AUDIENCE FOR GIVING ME SUCH GOOD TIMES. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
Only 13 years later, "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin. Like moving from a covered wagon to the F-18 fighter jet in a little over a decade. Never again will we see such a thermonuclear explosion of talent and creativity as the 1960s were.
One of the earliest videos of the Fender Stratocaster, which debuted in 1954 Great sound through what looks like a Fender Super (tweed wide panel) amp.
My 79 yo sister is convinced there's nothing worth seeing on RU-vid. The rest of the folks in our 55 and older community all chime in on what they go to RU-vid to see. The list is varied. I follow my curiosity and find gems like this. And cow hoof health. And puppies and kitties. And the details on replacing the tail light assembly on my 2001 Jeep. Unclogging the kitchen sink. Spatchcocking a chicken.
RU-vid is seriously unappreciated as an educational tool. There are thousands of videos here better than any instruction you’ll receive from your friendly neighborhood school teacher.
You're one year ahead of me, and I've never heard OF these guys, although I may have heard them on the radio in my early days. All I can say is that this is not only a good show, but it's FAR SUPERIOR to anything being done today. Music seems to have died in 1980, or there about. 😮
I "arrived" here in '55. When I was a kid my Dad used to sing parts of this while working on stuff around the house. I realize now that he must have caught this show on TV! Now it all makes sense 😎
Great band. The guitar player is flawless and perfectly in tune. Great solo. He was more concerned playing great as opposed to showing off for the audience. That’s what singer is for! God love this band.
No it’s not!If I was one of those cats I would be going crazy on stage. You are too much purist, not enough crazy cat dude!I’m glad that today we have the many dance moves and styles that owe origins/inspiration to rockabilly.I just love all the dancers going hell for leather in the harp vids.🎶🎶😍❤️😎😎🙃😊😋🤗😎😎😎🌺🖖
Believe it or not in I bought a Gretsch in 1968- a used Champagne Set with 2 floor and 2 mount tom tom and a 22 and 24" Z cymbals all for $200. A few years later my head was really big and I wanted a brand new kit. The new kit did not come close to have the warm, rich sound the older set did. Was just thinking about my old kit yesterday.
Never heard them before..excellent! ..Sounds a lot like 'Matchbox',written by Carl Perkins, released by Carl in 1955,also by by The Beatles in 1964...Looks like Carl was 'influenced' by this song..
Notice that the guitar is NOT a Gretsch but IS in fact a Fender Stratocaster. Just to let all of the Brian Setzer fans know, the Gretsch guitars were only played by a few musicians back in the 1950s. It was mostly Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters/or Esquires, and Gibsons.
Yes! Something I've been saying for a long time. Gretsch guitars were hardly used by the original Rockabilly guys. Fenders and P90 Gibsons were used a lot more.
Not sure why it matters. Not all rockabilly guys play Gretsch guitars, and not all Gretsch players are into rockabilly. There's no such thing as a "rockabilly guitar".
@@seanmeisner3190 hiya Sean... Well, I just retired from performing for about 40 years and I guess I was on the "Third Wave" of the Rockabilly scene in the Eighties... That's when I started out. The Stray Cats were really big at the time, so I guess because Setzer and the Gretsch were pretty synonymous back then, it sort of cemented the idea in everyone's mind that the 6120 was THEE Rockabilly guitar. Of course, there were a bunch of us who never fell into the habit. I did have an old Cadillac Green Country Club at one time... But my main axes have been Teles... Hotrodded usually with Bigsby pick-ups and B-16 tailpieces. But I sure do love old archtops... Only thing is, they were a bit too fragile to take on the road and abuse every night. The Telecasters are essentially canoe paddles you can plug in.😄 Cheers
@@joeblack8915 not true.....rockabilly/rock n roll was created by Bill Haley and his band in 1952 with the song ''Rock the joint''...that is way before Elvis even thought about stepping into and recording at Sun records...it is a fact end of story........
Great sound .. 1955 that guitar player owned a Fender Strat . Earliest video of a Strat player ? 54 or 55 vids are rare . Sid King has a bunch of nice tunes .
My maternal grandfather had a band in the 30s and beyond. He had a pickup on his "fiddle". One of his guitarists was Ernest Tubbs. Tubbs rode around San Angelo, Texas, in a horse-drawn cart, (no, not his daily driver, 😅) selling shiner beer and playing for tips. He got mad at my Paternal grandfather for not bailing him out of jail when he and my uncle got drunk and hit a telephone pole.
Does anyone out there remember the late great Eddie Cochran he was a wonderful performer who was tragically killed way too young,if you have no knowledge of him look him up,he was going to be the next Elvis, but he was his own.
I think Sid King was the Rythm Pioneer for the Sound of Janis Martin, Carl Lee Perkins and Co. , and the Stomp Sound of Rockabilly, the "Fast Blues" . I love this Rockabilly Sound since i was 6 years old .... My Mother was a Fan of this Music and get a reunion Album from Sid and Bill ( i think it was 2017 er 18)...a 90 years old Rockabilly - Woman, she died with proud 91 years... but i know Rockabilly gonna stay forever ! 😁👍
This is from the ABC TV show "Ozark Jubilee", broadcast from Springfield, MO. The was also called "Jubilee USA" for the last couple of years it was on the air. Hosted by Red Foley, it was the show that also featured the first national TV appearances by Wanda Jackson and Brenda Lee (who became a show regular). While it has been rumored that they turned down Elvis Presley, the show did have other rockers of the era, Carl Perkins, Bobby Lord, Marvin Rainwater and Johnny Cash (yes, there was a time when he did some rockabilly).
The 50s are like the only time people could rock the shit out of an acoustic guitar. The aggressive sound thrived in the 50s, and hard rock/ heavy metal didn’t really come out until the 60s.
Although they wore country clothes, Rockabilly music is the mixture of the" blues" or rhytm and blues music with "hillbilly" or country music.Great music! .The best!Saludos de una chica rockabilly a todos-as los rockers que lean esto.
Yes, a lot of singers and groups song country music in the 60s and they song less rock and roll music .Many singers song country- rock or country- folk since the 60s.
Man.. That Fender Strat is out there somewhere, and it’s worth a small fortune! That’s only the 2nd year it was made, came out in ‘54. The Tele is just a few years older in ‘51
Iya, I say, would ya mind dropping a rose off at Rowden Hill, Chippenham, Wiltshire, tell Eddy we miss him, I'd much appreciate it mate, oh!, and say hello to the Rockers and 59 Clubers iffin you don't mind, much obliged mate.
It’s no wonder, really, that Rock’n’Roll took hold of everyone in the 1950s the way it did… This sounds perfect There isn’t a microphone in sight but the voice sails about the above the band perfectly and so does the guitar when it’s time to solo…the music the band is playing was made for dancing and the language of the song is post WW2 national slang Gradually, it was decided that everything needs to be mic’d up and it’s not necessarily the best for the music
Yeah, when people talk about Rock N Roll as we have come to know it, they always mention it's blues roots but forget to acknowledge that it's the addition of country swing that transformed it into what became known as rock n roll.
@@blueduck5589 Chuck Berry, for example, credited his unique sound to combination of country and blues. "It was his particular genius to graft country & western guitar licks onto a rhythm & blues chassis in his very first single, "Maybellene", for example. Also that's why I was careful to say rock "as we have come to know it". The term rock n roll was actually a name coined by black artists like Fats Domino mostly attributed to a new genre of blues, a groovier less syncopated blues style. The name was co-opted by people like Dewey Phillips and slapped on a variety of new types of music. There's endless articles about black and white artists combining country and western licks and vocalization on top of blues to create a new genre, eventually called rock n roll. Also, if you just listen to it, it's pretty obvious.
Like it. As a kid in Phoenix there was Lew King talent show on TV. Discovered the Newton brothers singing act, Jerry and Wayne. I moved to Denver in '72. It had a gentleman's club called Sid King's. Almost as good as PT's or Shotgun Willie's.
My God! First time ever l've seen S King & Band performing as youngsters! This is a real gem! Very lucky to meet both, Sid & Billy! A million thanks for posting it! All the best!
This was back when TV studios were still trying to figure out what the best programming for television is and that's when you got some of the best stuff, when no holds were barred.
In 2002 I moved to Richardson Texas. I was driving around looking for a place to get a haircut, found a barber in a strip shopping center. The guy cutting my hair starts telling me that he used to tour with Elvis Presley. The photo of Sid and his brother standing in front of their touring wagon was right there on the wall. I didn't think much of it at the time. Twenty two years later, RU-vid suggests this video to me. I love their music. Just bought the album off iTunes. Great stuff.
Sid Erwin (aka King) owned the barbershop in Richardson Heights Shopping Center, next to what was then Sun Rexall. Brother Billy cut my hair for over 25 years. He was the real thing when it came to playing guitar and was a pretty good composer, too. I believe they had another hit, "Who Put The Turtle in Myrtle's Girdle." We both enjoyed all kinds of music and I always looked forward to my haircut with Billy.
Awesome stuff!!! Heavy metal fan back in the 70's KISS, VH, AC/DC etc. Then busts into my life Robert Gordon, Stray Cats etc. You can love 2 things at once!!!!!!
