@@GenUrobutcher Its very true though. Many things are circumstancial, and if something is buffed, the circumstance to justify taking it will appear more often. I fall into bad mindsets where I think stuff like “This card good, always take, this card bad, never take” and as a result my decks are usually terribly unsynergistic. I should learn from this.

​@katf9513 That's how I feel about cards with exhaust inside my own head. I think anything involving exhaust is just a waste unless I have dead branch unless the card is exhausting itself when I use it.

Vlaada is an incredibly talented designer. Through the Ages, especially A New Story, is one of my favourite board games (really only topped by Dominion). But pretty much anything Vlaada has made I like. Space Alert, Galaxy Trucker, Dungeon Petz, TtA are all great.

The majority of cards are built around being good within synergies and quite often are only good within those synergies. While it could easily be argued that Flex isn't good enough to have in your hand yadda yadda, the cards intention is a single turn burst *or* for being synergistic with Limit Break etc, and changing it to simply giving you a total strength increase would completely change the point of the card. As JoInRbs has said, it's perfectly fine for cards to not be good, and the difficulty in making Flex be useful for your hand is part of what makes deckbuilding interesting in the game. I don't think it's true to the nature of the card to make it not lose its own benefit after the end of turn and I think a more interesting or useful change (as your suggestion seems to only make it a *very* slightly different version of Inflame) would be to actually make the card lose you energy after its effect while providing a larger strength bonus for the turn it is activated: Say "Gain 5/7 Strength. At the end of this turn, lose 6/8 Strength."?

Literally before this vid I watched "Slay the Spire A20 Ironclad Heart Kill 9:24 Speedrun" and I thought Flex was broken.

Simon there is a 200 damage cap per turn. Most of his attacks were already doing more than that.

well, he did play the heavy blade already dealing 200 dmg to the heart. Since it cant take more than 200 per turn on ascension 20 there would not have been much reason to play it again for 0 dmg

Bash on previous turn. Immolate doesn't show vulnerable damage boost coz it hits all.

The first immolate is upgraded. It dealt 93, but the boss had 12 block.

I actually found out... I think... It's from a mission in xcom in the city of that name. there was a speech message shortly after, which sounded weird and had the vibe of a greeting of sorts? I guess it took off as a channel meme afterwards

3 Burns sounds fair, and have it only do 2 burns on upgrade

What if immolate applied 69 burns and dealt 4.20 damage? Would that make it balanced?

@@jpryan90 I've actually had the opportunity to loosely discuss with one of the devs in the official Discord server about this and it's quite fascinating - Immolate is actually in the lower half of rare cards by "the metrics" and therefore hasn't been seen as in need of a tweak yet by the dev team. However, this is something that leans into what Jorbs mentioned on the somewhat Recent "best cards" video, the metric aren't often that linear and obvious to read. And Immolate? It's a card you draft act 1, early act 2, pretty much never in act 3; when you still don't have a good package set up yet and can't focus on the later stage builds and synergies yet. It's a card that new players find a lot of success with when they're still in the stage of the game that you draft all the damage cards and die to act 2 boss over and over. It's quite heavily catered to "failing" runs compared to things like Juggernaut which you mostly draft with Feel No Pain, Corruption, Metallicize, and other cards indicative of a deck that has survived the early stages of a run. So the data says immolate isn't a great card but as Jorbs said, you need to be critical of the data and read behind the lines to get the full picture. I personally think at least changing it to add the burn to the draw pile to put it in line with Wild Strike and Reckless Charge is warranted. It's a really strong card.

@@MonochromeStars in your opinion which is worse; adding to hand or adding to draw pile? While the 2 energy cost gives you not much room to block the burn damage, the burn damage in return for the amount of damage immolate does is still a good trade and means that the Burn doesn't act as a draw reduction in future.

@@sogen7967 ah, okay, because i noticed a bunch of stuff is different, just found anger as my favourite card in the whole game the other day and decided to look up some different runs people have done to find some more good cards.

@@thehumanstunlock7588 yeh, the next patch which adds the fourth character comes with a lot of new stuff and changes, it should be on console soon enough.

@@sogen7967 just for clarification, is anger as good as i think it is? because it seems like free spamable reliable damage to me.

@@thehumanstunlock7588 it's ok, the issue with 0 costs is that you're losing energy efficiency if you play too many, as your hand will swarm with them. As with most cards it really depends on what else you have With a kunai or shuriken or spinning top it becomes really good, and with good draw it's nice

i've spoken before about how mtg basically weaponized the trading cards slot machine marketing approach. i am not a fan of slot machines in general, and am not a fan of how they're trying to do things online on mtg:a now either. the collection aspect is probably the thing that most prevents me from continuing to play the game, although i'm not a huge fan of the pvp competitive aspect either. i don't generally shy away from talking about that on stream, but i don't feel obliged to bring it up when i'm talking about other stuff. slay the spire wouldn't exist without mtg, for example, but if i recognize and give credit for that it doesn't imply that everything else about mtg is great too.

@@Jorbs Thanks for the reply. I've followed your youtube material for a while but never heard you speak about this particulular angle. When you called it one of the best games from an influence perspective, it got me irked enough to want a clarification.
