Best scan tool for the money?

Is there actually one best scan tool? No there is not really one best scan tool. They all have their limitations without a doubt. I have had plenty of time's as mentioned in the video that one scan tool will not do what the others will do. There are many questions you have to answer when you are deciding on a scan tool. What are you going to be working on.
Honda's and acura's? Asian vehicles overall? Domestic? Euro? they all have their pro's and cons with each brand.
Do you need can-fd? Key programming options? adas calibrations? So many things to know.

In a nutshell if you don’t spend thousands of dollars don’t expect to get many features but for the most part he is somewhat correct sometimes cars have a hard time communicating with even $10,000 scanners at times vs a $1500 scanner

I have a 2018 ram 3500 diesel. It’s a work truck for my land clearing business. I try to do most of the work myself. To save cost, bust mostly time. I don’t have time to take truck into dealer and let it sit. I currently have a service 4wd message on. My cheap Harbor freight code reader won’t read the and tell me what’s going on. I replaced the 4wd actuator and the transfer case shift Motor. Still not working. Would the icon T8 be a good scan tool than can access the service 4wd message and help me out with problems like this? Or would it be waste of money. I hope to hear back thanks!

Most basic code readers will have live data on them. You will have to check the specific tool on whether it’s able to see that data on your Nissan. Honestly it’s just cheaper to pay a shop to service the transmission. It’s inexpensive and the intervals aren’t insane

Verus edge is still one of the best scan tools you can buy to this day. That’s why. Best bang for your buck for a used scan tool with a 4 channel labscope for 2000 or less. Lmk when you can find a scan too with a 4 channel scope for less than 2000 then we can talk.

Thanks for sharing this. Probably my biggest takeaway is to have a really clear idea what features you need. Definitely disappointing to learn there's no all in one, and frankly I'd place the blame for that at the feet of auto manufacturers. There should be a reasonable access to any manufacturers vehicle information, and a global standard of how that information can be accessed by scan tools. Corporations locking up access to specific applications squashes competition and is very anti Right to Repair.

It sounds like I made a good choice in scanners. I went with the TopDonAD500. I thought I had a problem with my pickup. Check engine light and ABS light came on, message on the dash said to service the electronic braking system, disabled my 4x4 and the steering wheel lacked some of the power steering. I decided to buy my own scan tool because, if I can diagnose the issue myself, I can fix it. Unfortunately my truck fixed itself before I got the scanner. It was a couple rainy days when it happened so some water must have got somewhere it shouldn't have. Oh and whatever happened was draining my battery. She sat for about a week, my friend jumped it and poof, lights were gone. I did hook it up to my truck to see what I can see and from the looks of it, this basic little scanner will deal with most of the issues I might face in the future as a DIYer. I didn't look at the stored code real close but it said something about losing communication with my ABS system. I will hook it up again and take a more thorough look later.

what a waste of time. i came to see your opinion on these models and some comparisons to get a better sense of what i need and want and instead i got some guy rambling about irrelevant stuff. if you care to make something more relevant please release a video comparing some scan tools within some pice ranges, their capabilities and your preference. I am a DIYer that being sad i agree that i will not use most of the functionality however i will be using it a lot. i resell cars and scan tools would be such big help in this line of work. i need a scan tool to replace my code reader. there u go man go make a good video.

You obviously didn’t listen to the video then. But diy’ers usually don’t. They are just looking for a silver bullet answer. And I’ve made multiple videos on scan tools but everyone wants all the answers in one video but then when you do that the video is too long and everyone complains. Then you l shorten it and there isn’t enough info. Then it’s not the right info. Can’t make all the whiners happy

Can I start by saying I understand your frustration but I think it’s misplaced on the creator here. I too have been on this hunt before and it sucks. The short answer WAS in the first minute of the video: “All of them. “Techs would love to get a silver bullet in a scanner but it’s not the case. Also note that techs have a basic understanding from school but after that it’s the advanced training from experienced techs and hands on experience which gives them their knowledge. Being a tech is a lifelong education career and tomorrow there will be something new as the modern day vehicle changes daily. So to close my opinion on the matter I would say start with one and be prepared to buy another. It’s an expensive career and maximizing your profits on these flips will be key to ensuring your roi is worth the work and money. Good luck to you pal.

Agree! I use mainly my Snap-on Zeus & Autel Ultra. I wish Snap-on would put topology on their scan tools which I keep asking them when, but they say they are discussing it for the last 3 yrs. If I need topology, I use my Ultra. Each one has pros & cons & capabilities. The price of subscriptions & updates is getting insane. Autel Ultra was @$1600 for my last update. I bought my Zeus from the Rock & Roll Express truck when they first came out & I got a free 3 yr subscription with it b/c every time they came out with a new scan tool I upgraded to it plus I help out shops when they had questions or problems with theirs & my SO dealer asked me. I agree for DIYers just buy a code reader unless they plan on working on it themselves and understand PIDs & bi-directional controls and their capabilities. Great advice for Scanner Danner subscription b/c he has videos from Rosedale Tech when he was an instructor there. Best $11 to gain access to hundreds of in-classroom trainings! Great video!

I have reprogrammed before my 2010 TCM module via the online SPS programming TIS2web with the paid service using my VCXnano from Vxdiag. I have 2 work vans 2010 Chevy Express 4.8L and 2016 Chevy Express 4.8L. These vans if I recall correctly having the same engine, transmission, and everything. My main question is, would it be okay to look at DTCs and reset or relearn via the GDS2 application for a 2010? Supposedly, any vehicle before 2013 you need to use Tech2Win, but I selected 2014-2016 years on my GDS2 for my 2010 vehicle and all the modules populated along with DTCs and options to test the components. So basically, is it okay to use a gds2 2014+ vehicle type on a 2010 Chevrolet Express van?

I often have to replace transmissions. Most of them need to be calibrated after they are replaced. Snap On scanners are expensive new, but they are also very easy to find used. Will a Verus Pro handle things like calibrating a CVT trans? Will any of the others?

I replaced my Snap On Modis Ultra that is completely updated for the Topdon Phoenix Smart and it definitely does more than the Modis imo. I've noticed you said some will scan modules or look at them when they are not fitted. My Snap On when i would hit display fitted systems only it would actually skip some. Overall for me it's Topdon. Not saying Snap On is bad, but they're way over priced for anything. Especially for any add ons which topdon has so many that i believe can be used with all the Phoenix line. My Modis helped me through a lot of stuff, but change is inevitable and hopefully they'll take note of the other companies.

Topdon makes great scan tools. I’ve never had my snap on not include fitted systems. As mentioned in the video they all have their pros and cons. To be honest comparing a max to a modis is not a fair comparison. Comparing a verus edge or zeus to the max would be a comparison.

Nice video thank you I think for me what is lacking here is a ScanTool rating system. A system set to classify the type and level of system a ScanTool can access the cars systems and what it can pull from. It is hard to know which or what options you’ll need to work on a car until you have a car with an issue and have the ScanTool you purchased to then later find out that it doesn’t offer the options you need. When you try to compare ScanTool models, you have service types that it does and whether or not it offers bidirectional capabilities. But their should be a rating level system like, level 1 is your basics code reader, level 2 is code reader with the power to clear those codes, level 3 abilities to access other important parts of the cars system and run basic diagnostics and have bidirectional abilities, level 4, level 5, level 6 and so on. But the service manuals and tech data for the car should also reference these levels so that you are an aware that this repair will require a level 7 ScanTool. This would make it much easier to know what level tool is needed for the type of repair is required. Plus an important piece you didn’t mention about ScanTools are their price of renewals, this could be a big deal for DIYer’s since they might not be making lots of money working on many cars.
@Enrightauto
@Enrightauto Месяц назад
That’s because every vehicle, every scan tool and every brand are all different. So to make a scale like you are saying you would need every scan tool, every brand of car and to try every job which would be quite literally impossible sadly. But I love the idea

I just want a tool that can tell me why the check engine on or wrench symbol or something else like tire pressure. I don’t need a expensive tool where I can’t use it properly and help me saving money on figuring out what’s wrong instead of going places and forcing me to pay out them at times. Good vid, helpful because there’s a lot of misinformation and too easy to burn money.

The scan tool I would choose doesn’t fit in a $1000 budget unfortunately for Asian and domestic unless you can find a verus edge used for $1k or perhaps a modis edge or something similar. I’ve found my snap on’s to be the best for Asian and domestic. Second in line would probably be topdon or autel but as mentioned in the video all scan tools fall short. I would ask the shop to invest into a scan tool for you. Techs shouldn’t have to buy their own scan tool. The only stipulation would be you can’t use it for side work which is fair

The biggest question I'm having with after market scan tools is the bidirectional capabilities. Im a GM technician and am thoroughly experienced in GDS2 and Tech2. I'm having a hard time trying to find how aftermarket compares to them. I'm not interested in programming, adas, key fobs. It's simply the Pids and bidirectional functions. So my questions are for example, does this brand and model generally (reguardeless of vehicle manufacturer) have 50% or 75% or 90% pids and bidirectional features as the oem tools? Is there a rescouce that answers this in a specific manner?

You just have to look at the specific model of scan tool and it will tell you if it has service functions and bi directional controls.

I know they all say service functions and bidirectional functions but none of them say how indepth, like on OEM tool you can command anything but on aftermarket they don't say that if you go into the ecm whether they only command 3,5,12,20 etc different things. like I'm sure the snap on Zeus scanner commands more than an autel 808.
