Going to give Robin Hobb a go in 2024. I am a huge T. Kingfisher fan, so I second all the love that goes her way! Happy holidays.

I have been wanting to read the Farseer Trilogy from Robin Hobb for so long, but everytime I went to read it I just couldn't get into it. But since you talked so highly of them for so long I decided to give them one more go, and when I tell you the audiobook makes it much easier to get into, I ain't lying. I FLEW through Assassin's Apprentice, and am very excited to start Royal Assassin probably next year (I have to finish my other library books before I commit to a 800+ book XD). Thank you for your passion for this series, I think this is going to turn into a favorite fantasy series for me as well! Also can we just have a moment to appreciate Hobb's undercut of traditional fantasy misogyny in the fact that she makes the Six Duchies line of succession chronological rather than male only? SO REFRESHING

Everything you said about The Broken Earth- you put into words perfectly my feelings about the series. As a huge sci-fi/ fantasy lover, I’m looking forward to checking out the other books on this list!

I read Assassin’s Apprentice this month. It had been on my TBR for nearly a decade (I bought the ebook on a whim when it was on sale), but I always felt too daunted to actually read it. Your praise for Robin Hobb finally persuaded me to try it, and I ended up LOVING it. Now I’m super excited to continue the series. Thanks for persuading me to try it.

I also enjoyed a lot of T. Kingfisher this year! Some other top favorites of mine were Tress of the Emerald Sea, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, The Once and Future Witches, and The Golden Enclaves, all of which I read early in 2023. I didn't have too many "bad" reads in fantasy this year, but it wasn't my standout genre like I had anticipated (partly because I didn't keep up with all the books I was anticipating, lol). But some other enjoyable SFF reads I want to continue with are Sword Catcher and Assistant to the Villain. And then I need to get back into Robin Hobb!

I loved A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking. It was cute. edit: it did feel a little more Middle-grade than YA. But her acting like a 14-year-old might've been why the book felt like it was targeted at middle-grade readers more than YA readers.
@bookslikewhoa
@bookslikewhoa 8 месяцев назад
I agree but I think that’s because we’re so used to YA being so aged up- this reminded me of what YA was like back in my day (insert old lady voice here)

@@bookslikewhoa I'm trying to remember what books would've been called YA when I was in middle school in the mid/late 90s and I can't think of any. I really hate how the YA genre has been more and more catered to the early 20s to early-30s readers instead of kids.

@marie45610 Hmm late 80 early 90s for me… I would say range of sweet valley high, drizzle books, much of robin mckinley aka blue sword, tamora pierce. Anne McCaffrey was adult but approachable and I started her at 13 with dragonflight.

I read the Rain Wilds Quartet this year too. The characters were maybe not as strong as in some of Hobb's other books but the setting is really unique and I loved seeing the dragons come into their own. I liked the way the human characters changed as they started to emulate some of the characteristics of their dragons and then became more Elderling-like. All in all, a lot to really like in the quartet and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, given its apparent reputation. Obviously, we're right and everyone else is wrong!

A Wizard's Guide sounds interesting! I LOVE Hobb!!! Stone Sky was definitely the best of that series. The Blade Itself had no plot, was hundreds of pages of gratuitous gore and I didn't like any of the characters. No more Joe for me!! LOL. My second favorite fantasy series for this year (Hobb is always first 🙂) was The Riyria Revelations by Sullivan. Dark Matter by Crouch was also good. Thank you for your yearly rankings! Happy New Year!

I listened to the 2nd First Law book and I often myself asking Glokta’s favorite question to himself….”why am I doing this” or something to that effect. Whenever I find myself making questionable choices on the road I remember his saying of being found on the canal facedown- I will be found facedown eating asphalt if I don’t slow down. The man is full on curious lessons on life and the important questions we should ask. Makes sense I guess since he is a …..questioner🦷👁️👂🏾💀

Oh, yay for A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking! It's my favorite read of the year! 😁🥳 (I have, sadly, realized this year that how T. Kingfisher writes romance just doesn't work for me 🥲 but her YA/middle grade stories tend to be really enjoyable for me - Minor Mage was also really fun)
