In this video I bring you a visualization of handheld console sales data from 1979 to today. It is a sales timeline using worldwide stats mixed with some history of cartridge based handheld consoles.
lmao as soon as Nintendo came into the handheld market in 1989, They just Set up shop as the ultimate kings of handhelds! Heck, even PSP only sells evenly with their AVERAGE systems, while their best systems completely overtake it.
First these for xbox .Second Sony is improving their games, hardware, everything meanwhile Nintendo uses the same games.,hardware, everything again and again. Now that I think it Nintendo is gayer than xbox and sonic fanart together. And that's a fact
You have a point but will you help me choose to play super smash bro ultimate or super smash bros Brawl. They are SOO DIFFERENT. Their differences are that the same game but with a almost different name and graphics . No,no,no I decided to play super Mario but which one???Their differences are that they have almost different graphics. In conclusion Nintendo is a company that afraid to do something new and they always drop the nostalgia bomb.Nintendo you are pathetic
Microvision held the title for the second longest amount of time, from 79-89, and was still in the top ten until 2011. Absolutely shocking for a console that only sold 150k units.
@@emmet042 How could it? It only sold 880.000 units and only lasted from 1994- 1996 had about what 22 games (?? Please correct me if i am wrong on that)!
@@whosaidthat84 Actually that's the weird part. The 3DS total IS the 2DS and 3DS numbers, it's using Nintendo's sold through numbers which are the whole 3DS/2DS line. I'm not sure why he also has a graph for just the 2DS.
I would love the vita had better life, I own a 3ds and no vita. The vita had/has a big problem it's the memory card, as it's to expensive. With the 3ds you could have any sd and use it to save. With the vita the memory it's to expensive. Probably it wouldn't be enough to beat nintendo, but it would have sold much better.
@@jordicoma True, but if it had more support from sony, it could have been much better than the 3ds. But of course as soon as the vita failed, sony brushed it under the rug instead of fixing the problems.
Around 7 years ago for Christmas i got a 3ds and that thing was amazing, i lost it one day and never found it, to this day that was one of my favorites, besides for the psp that my friend had, i forgot what the game was called but i remember it be9ng some type of game where you would drive as far as you could without crashing, burn out i think
I was never a huge Nintendo fan, but I did have a 1990s gameboy, and I loved that little handheld. I had no idea, none whatsoever, that Nintendo was such a monster in the gaming console market. It's been very interesting to see these videos. Thanks.
Let's be honest. In 2030 their might exist another system similar to the switch in terms of switching from handheld to home console but can probably play games from all platforms
I mean The switch Will get to 100million easily But who knows that How much they are gonna sold after 100million my guess is that the switch will outsold the gameboy which have almost 120million units Sold
The classic GameBoy (including the coloured version) sold more than almost all other handheld consoles. No graphics, poor or no colours, no game saving, no wifi, no camera...pure FUN!
Nintendo make consoles for the whole family to enjoy Nintendo ain't like PlayStation or X Box PlayStation and X Box are meant for serious gaming while Nintendo is meant for fun with the whole family and back then game boy was still way better than all the other consoles PlayStation Kid
@@palaceswitcher your logic is backwards here, it's a hybrid console which means it's both a handheld and a home console, not neither of the 2. It has the all the properties of a handheld therefore it is also a handheld.
3DS is still worth having - has access to both 3DS and DS libraries, which are huge. If you mod it, then it can play GBA, GBC, GB, SNES, NES as well. Combining 3DS and 2DS together, Nintendo occupies the top 4 spots.
2:23 Even Nintendo don't state that the Gameboy has a 40 hour battery life. The GB manual states 15 hours, with a give or take depending on the game being played.
@@BigMelvinHarrisSmoke it's just a joke saying that game boy advance gameboy and ds are humans who have the same father but are fighting and two of them team up
I loved my PSP. I spent an hour and a half on a bus every day for school and got so much gaming in lol. I still have two of the bulky ones and the slim one, which I actually still play on occasion.
My favorite handheld is my New 3DS XL. Although I never use the 3D feature, this handheld has a huge variety of great games! Mario, Pokémon, Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Minecraft, Smash Bros just to name a few.
Indeed, the 3ds family of systems are the best handhelds created. I don't have a switch yet, but looking forward to it and see if I can get that much joy out of it
Sebastián Alejandro The switch is definitely worth it, and I've had much fun with it, but I've definitely had a better time with the 3DS, which I may be biased due to my opinion of it's selection of games, but I've definitely had a lot of fun with the switch and it's array of newer games.
It wasn't included because the g&w systems were all different , like every g&w will have a different game and if you want more games , then you gotta by more
My favorite handheld was PSP. It was my second console after the PS3 after I found the remote play feature. I actually wanted a switch or a DS but I am so glad I didn't. In my country a used/old would go for ₹2000 or so but a perfect condition/new would be a bit to pricey so I got an old
I had a DS as a kid, and I was looking through my old stuff and after TEN YEARS the DS was still sitting there in an old box, WITH POWER and it STILL PLAYED GAMES. my mind is blown.
@@Rookspl ever since my little brother broke his New 2DS XL in January, he's been begging Mom and Dad to buy another one for him. And me and him were in tears when we heard the 3DS was discontinued.
Why are the 2DS and 3DS separate? I always considered the 2DS line to be apart of the 3DS line. So if there the same then the 3DS sold... 88.5M, which Puts it at 3rd on the leaderboard
I think according to Nintendo themselves and other official sources the sales of the 2DS actually count towards the sales of the 3DS which would actually put the 3DS noticeably higher than the PSP. Oh well. I chose to go with the 2DS because I had played a 3DS before and I didn't care for the 3D features at all so the 2DS being so much cheaper was what I went for and I loved it
I owned the 2nd gen psp and luvd it. It had some of the most awesome titles I hv played this far. Nobody expected such a powerful handheld at that point of time. They actually made a portable ps2, kudos to sony for it! I wish they wudn't hv discontinued handhelds juss bcos of ps vita failure ;(
Because Sony abandoned it, and Nintendo already dominated the handheld market. Companies don’t see the value in trying to fight for a market share when they’ll have so much ground to make up to catch Nintendo.
Gameboy was really something else. Thinking about back then with my Gameboy black pocket version is so nostalgic. Just the starting coin sound *plim* was special. I mean, just the font amd letters of GAMEBOY from am ad or box was thrilling and making me feel hyped.
The 3ds is hands down the best handheld I've ever played, amazing library and compatible with the tremendous ds library as well. Can't afford a switch yet, but looking forward to it
My favorite handhelds 1. Nintendo ds 2. Gameboy advandced sp 3. Nintendo switch I dont like sony games that much they are still great dont get me wrong but i prefer nintendo
You must keep in mind also, that a huge part of the appeal of the PSP was its bustling homebrew custom firmware scene which allowed you to run emulators for just about everything Playstation 1 and prior... which includes every Nintendo console and handheld except N64. I played it frequently from highschool to college (2006-2009) and beyond. Still have it. Once Sony cracked down on all the piracy and released the Vita, they were dead in the water. It had features that PSP lacked (like a second analog stick) but its core audience was starting at universities and careers by then. That coupled with no homebrew during the golden age of piracy spelled doom. Nobody buys a sony handheld for just Killzone or any other mediocre exclusive spinoff of a franchise that was dying alongside Vita.
I had the chance of owning the original Game Boy, the Game Boy Color and the Sega Game Gear back in the nineties, but I’d gotta confess that what I enjoyed most was playing those Sonic and Doble Dragon games on the Game Gear 🥰
Y4123 They didn’t include single game handheld. Noticed how the Tiger games didn’t make it in despite flooding the market from the 80s to the late 90s?
Ah man, the original GameBoy with the color scheme. That was my 1st handheld console. But wow, 40 hours of battery life was actually pretty solid for its time.
