What is the best size zero turn mower? As you might imagine, this will depend on circumstances. With that being said, I have some opinions on the topic to help you choose the best zero turn mower for your lawn or your lawn care business. Common sizes include 48", 52" and 60" mowers. 36" and 42" are common for walk behind mowers. If you are just choosing one lawn mower, then it is very important to know what type properties are you primarily servicing. Don't go buy a small mower just for a few lawns. Also, don't get a big mower just for a few large properties. If you are getting two mowers, then you have a little more flexibility. You may choose one small one for many properties, and also get a large one to help you knock out some acreage quickly. Dealer support is also important. Hopefully this video will help you choose the best mower for your situation.

I have a 42 inch riding lawn not a zero turn but I love it fits anywhere I want it to fit and it has 22 horse power so it doesn’t get clogged easily

I run a 42" and a 50". Both are zero turn and fit on my 7x14' trailer. The 42 great for a number of places in a mobile home park that I do, the 50 will work but not as well. I have some lots that are 3/4 to 1 1/2 acres and the 50 knocks 'em out pretty fast but if need be the 42 will get 'em done as well. I don't use a push or walk behind as I will turn 70 in a few months and the body doesn't like the wear and tear Great video.

Great video! My primary was a 36" zero turn for 14 years! Push mower for backup. Late last season bought a new Wright 42" stander still adjusting to the controls but love the ability to hop on and off do not miss sitting at all. Mowing northern lawns typically 3/4 acre and smaller.

In my 3rd year! Have a 61" Snapper, 52" Toro, 48" Ferris, and 21" Honda push. Usually got my 61" & 48" with the 21" Honda 52" backup

I, definitely need a 61" just to cut my grass that's 2 acres. I'm tired of burning 3-4 hours every other weekend with my 42" Craftsman 110 rider. Little mowers like that trying to cut that much grass don't last long and we've burned up quite a few of them.

My 72 inch has cut my yard mow time in half from my 54 inch Deere. Not just the deck size helped but speed and power.

I use a 36” zero turn and change the gears so that it can go up to 15 mph. Originally it only ran up 5 mph. Changed out the engine from 19 hp to 28 hp too! Cuts great and runs and cuts grass like a champ!😊

I knew we were going to target small properties from the onset of our business. My issue was what type of mower and not so much the size. I started with a 48” zero turn and I felt like it was too wide for the small properties we targeted. I traded for a 36” walk behind but decided it was going to be too dangerous if I added a helper. I then went to 30” push mowers. We used those for a while and then I decided if I was going to be able to keep a helper we couldn’t be push mowing only! 😂 Finally got a 36” stand on mower and never looked back. We now run 2-36” Ferris Z1’s. They are perfect for what we do. Great video and lots of good information as usual Jason!

I have a 50” Toro and a Toro push mower. It’s a good combination for me. If the back yard is big and I can’t get my zero turn back there I’ll just turn the job down. Push mower is for tiny lawns only.

I have to run a 10' long to fit with truck in driveway. I have a 6x10 enclosed and a 5x10 open. I run an exmark turf tracer 36" for my yards with gates and i just got rid of 50" residential zero turn and bought a 54" toro proline walk behind for my bigger yards and yards with no gate. I keep a 21" on my trailer. My friend runs a 52" Lazet Z and a 21 push

I found that a 36” zero turn is good to have to fit in backyards. A lot of gated backyard won’t fit a 42 or a 48 then the push mower have to come out the trailer .

Yeah I just bought a 42" timecutter last summer and unless they have an exceptionally wide gate I can't get the 42" into the backyard. Should've bought a 50" then get a 32" for gates.

Looking ti get started in an area with booming new construction and the yards are so small, close together, and flat that I'm seriously considering a 36" walk-behind, and eventually add a 52" or 60" stander for the handful of neighborhoods with bigger yards

I like that plan

I have a 50" Toro zero turn and a 36" exmark Walk behind. The zero turn is my primary mower. I have 3 21" mowers but I haven't used any of them in about 7 years. If I can't cut the grass without pushing it, then I don't want it

Most places where I am can’t get a 42” through a gate. 36” seems like an ideal size for my area.

Very helpful information, thank you. What brand of chute blocker (@ 19-22 seconds) are you using on your Toro and where did you get it? I need to get one for the zero turn I just picked up and I like the look of the one you are using. My neighbor has a lawn business and is about 70% commercial and the rest residential. Last year in one of his neighborhoods (his Mom’s neighborhood) a neighbor asked him to give her an estimate and wanted him to start cutting the yard. He inspected the yard and told her he could not do the yard for her, that her gate was too small and didn’t keep a push mower on the trailer. (The backyard was fairly small and wouldn’t take long to cut). She said well what if I draw up a contract stating you use your equipment in the front and your trimmer in the back and use my push mower in the back. You supply the gas to the push mower mower but have no liability for damage to the push mower and my son will do any maintenance necessary to the push mower and I’ll give you $10 a week over your quoted price. He said okay to the deal and told her that she made a great negotiator. She said I should be. I was an attorney for 50 years. She said let me know if you need me to negotiate any contracts for and that she still consults on occasion. She was 83 years old and cut her own grass with push mower until last year. In my old neighborhood our neighbor was 75 and she still cut her grass herself with her push mower until I convinced her to let me cut it for her...

Great video, I have a 60 in cut because a lot of my properties are long distance and they're pretty good size properties so I'm able to cut it in a short amount of time I was pushing the lawns for a while before I got the 60 inch cut a whole lot faster lol. Thanks

i have found that a 42 inch works for me. I just mow a few yards with tight gates. I also found that a rear wheel self propelled helps me get thru small yards quickly. The problem I’m finding is the push to battery power pushing out the small engine mowers. The cost of extra batteries drives up the cost. Not sure how that will work out.

42” JD due to the size of my gate, and I regret it. If it doesn’t have a roll bar and at least three anti scalp wheels, it’s a toy.

This comment might get deleted, but those Walker bagging mowers are a POS unless you are mowing irrigated lawns exclusively. The dust they produce will absolutely kill the motor if it a dry period.
