I just got the Xtherm NXT and yes, it is much quieter. There is a different quieter and less frequent noise, but there it is. Can't wait to use in the field.

I’m surprised they didn’t come out with this sooner. At 225 lbs the 2.5” thickness was fine for me. I’d like the added width so my arms don’t fall off the sides, but not sure it’s worth the extra weight. Nice review.

I just opened my new Xlite NXT today. Having had similar experiences to yours w older Neoairs, I was hesitant to order. But my last sleeps on my Tensor v2 felt lumpy and squeaky. Upon initial trial and impressions the new NXT is way quieter and feels comfortable. 🤞🏻

I finally have a pad that lets me sleep through the night too. My size large Thermarest Mondo King. Lol. Seriously. But in the backcountry my Uberlite was great, Xtherm okay, and Tensor Insulated is fsntastic. 😁

Unfortunately no one had the new X-Therm NXT in time for my departure so I got the ExPed 7 from my local REI. I’ll be trying it in the field soon so I hope it is warm enough for the situations I’ll be in which should be a bit above its R value temperature and problem free. It does seem comfy. Thanks

I’ve been seeing some exciting 2023 gear announcements. Curious if you will be trying the new Big Agnes Zoom UL Insulated pad (4.3 r-value and only 17oz for the wide!). NEMO also has an exciting tent release- releasing a few of their other backpacking tents in their OSMO fabric (poly blend fabric)! Their Dragonfly OSMO might convince me to finally give up my BA Copper Spur!

I had some interesting experience with Thermarest sleeping pads in winter which adapts to every mat as well. Because there is more of the mattress exposed to the cold air when you use the rectangular, your body has to heat it up more and there is more heat loss to the air. Therefore I would always go with the mummy version instead of the rectangular one.

Interesting observation. I have the largest kind of xtherm max with a dawn quilt, and I have definitely noticed drafts to be a potential problem. Especially in feet. I have since upgraded with dawn booties, and don't find this the be a problem any more, camping at negative degrees F (-20ies℃). If I wasn't too lazy to always strap my quilt to the pad every night, I probably would get the mummy shape. But I find that I move around so much that I sometimes even drop off my pad in some rare cases. I think the mummy would be a problem in that regard. But I am interested in testing your experience for my self, and see if there is merit to using a mummy shaped mattress to mitigate drafts.

@@___xyz___ I dont think he was talking about drafts, rather the exposed mattress cooling down the air INSIDE the mattress resulting in a colder nights sleep. You body heats up the pad and air inside it, with parts of the pads exposed to cold air it will be cooling the overall temperature of the pad down. With a mummy pad it would be fully covered by you and your bag/quilt so its not losing as much warmth.. I dont know this to be true but I could see the logic behind it. How much of a difference it makes Im not sure

Exped is my favourite, ultra 5R wide Rvalue 4.8 655g. I don’t mind the slight weight, comfort is my thing. Tensor insulated Rvalue4.2 has multiple cold spots, at 0 C，but exped 5R is really comfortable at -5C. Perfect balance between weight warmth and comfort and of course price.

I have an x-lite, and the noise doesn’t bother me at all. It will be my go to pad for the next year. I also have an uber-lite and that thing is too fragile for my taste. Had one disintegrate on me already. They replaced it under warranty.

Ya, Max just means squared off corners. It's a bit weird that the rectangular pads are separated out. I consider them all just to be Xlite NXTs - rectangular or mummy.

The older one in the mummy-shaped Regular Wide option is the best choice for me. A rectangular pad is a waste of space and material. The mummy RW option is still the lightest and has the best warm-to-weight ratio vs its 3-season pad competition. I sleep with ear plugs in the backcountry (wind and birds but not bears, mountain lions or wolves in the Alps), so the noise was never an issue for me. No need to upgrade.

This one is the NXT Max. Max is for rectangular shape. Their also have a new NXT not Max, meaning it's still a mummy shape. So noise + weight reduction, warmth increase but price increase too.

I thought there was also going to be a 20" wide rectangular version of the NXT but don't seem to see it sold anywhere? The 25" wide looks nice but weighs 20oz, pretty heavy for a pad.

Definitely a little quieter--had to listen with my studio headphones on. Here in Canada, this new pad doesn't seem to be around yet. I'm also wondering what the new RAB sleep pads will be like. I'd like to get a new pad before I venture on the Great Divide trail in March--which reminds me, I need to watch your video about your trip there.

Then id just like to ask regarding the new Xlite NXT.....is there any upgrade on the finnicky air valve when combined with the pump sack? You said in your previous xlite review that the pump sack was prone to popping off when in use - is it better or any upgrades with this new model?

Unfortunately here in South Africa we can’t get 90% of the American/European brands but I still love learning about the gear and how you change it depending on conditions (not that it’s ever as cold over here in Cape Town/SA). I'm not sure how well the video captured how quiet the NXT is but when rolling around on and playing with it, I hear almost no crinkly noise. I thought Thermarest advertising a drop in noise was just advertising hype, but was blown away when I got to test the pad myself.

Would you say this pad (the xlite nxt max) can hold up down to around 10 degrees Fahrenheit like some charts say it can? I would get the xtherm as my ONE expensive 4 season pad but i mean it never really gets to single digits around me so i feel like its overkill. Thoughts?

No, I think 20F is kind of the limit. But it really depends on the ground. 20F in spring on wet/cold ground may not be possible whereas 10F in fall on warm/dry ground may be fine.

Other than 4.5 versus 3.5 r value and minimal weight difference, it’s nearly the same pad as my Nemo Tensor insulated regular/wide. But, I don’t think this is an upgrade given the baffles and fabric of the Tensor. Do you think it’s an upgrade?

The new Tensor has an r-value of 4.2, so very similar. The xlite is lighter and, in my experience, more durable. My tensor v2 failed and that has been the case for a lot of people out there.

@@Pasequale100 You may just need to add some air to it as temperatures drop as the pad will deflate a little bit as the warm air from your breath cools off.

@@JustinOutdoors i see you are the Best :) Thermarest responded to me like you :) Thanks for contacting us. Yes of course you can inflate your pad by breath! I've been inflating pads this way for 30+ years. If you're worries at all about mold - you can place a t-shirt or lightweight cloth over the valve and then breath air into the pad. It is very, very rare for mold to grow in the inside of a pad. We've been making a variety of pads for just over 50 years, and most have to be "topped off" with some breaths to fully inflate them. We've rarely seen issues with mold unless somehow water was allowed into the pad through the valve. Unless the pad is used in temperatures below freezing for many days in a row so the moisture in a person's breath freezes to the materials inside the pad and starts to build up over many days of use, there isn't enough moisture in a persons breath to build up over time. Otherwise the little bit of moisture in the pad leaves when the pad is deflated. Thank you, Steve Customer Service Rep 2

@@JustinOutdoors it's annoying how Thermarest have been hyping NXT for ages premised on 'available Jan 1st 23' . ... And then along comes the New Year and nothing. I understand supply chains and manufacturering/logistical constraints I just wish they didn't make Jan 1st a thing.. Lol maybe I'm just mad at myself because I'd planned on Jan 5th to incorporate a new NXT Xtherm Max into a trip... Tell me that doesn't sound great for a snowy pitch! Serves me right for being so decadent and not being content with one of the 3 pads I already own !

Horizontal baffles are terrible. I get super painful arms and shoulders sleeping on my side on the Xterm. I really wish Nemo or Exped brings out a pad that is competitive in terms of weight and R value.

Hated the x-lite. It’s awesome, don’t get me wrong, but not for me. Main issue was comfort. My arm kept falling asleep on it, and I had back pain. Just generally did not find it to be comfortable at all, which is a shame because the rest of its characteristics are best-in-class. Comfort matters. If you’re not sleeping well, you’re gonna suffer.

@@jaimin72 I actually would recommend trying the x-lite or x-therm, a lot of people use these pads and they are very lightweight with good R-value. I sent back the regular x-lite and ordered the regular-wide to see if that will help with my arm/back issues. Just because I had issues with it doesn’t mean you will per say. I did also try the REI Helix. Insanely comfortable pad, better R-value than the x-lite, easier to deflate, but 10 oz. heavier which is a deal breaker for more ultralight backpackers. If weight is less of a concern I’d definitely recommend trying it. It’s also pretty inexpensive for a pad. Also check out offerings from Nemo, Big Agnes, Sea to Summit etc. there’s a lot of good stuff out there depending on your criteria.

Personally, I don't get the whole noise issue with any pad. By the time that my head hits the pad, I'm out like a light within a couple of minutes and for some reason, I get my best sleeps out in the woods. Pads are for sleeping. If the crinkle of a pad wakes somebody up, they got issues. LOL

I got 9 hole after one night with the Tensor insulated. Production fault all at the same known spot. I did not have a proof of purcase. So didnt get a replacement….🥶
