You’ve gotta live with one of these small cars to realise the benefits of owning one. Everything is easier and cheaper. Cheaper to buy and run, easier to get around in and park, easier to wash and keep clean. They make a lot of sense.
Here in the States we don't have the Kia Picanto. The US government is busy giving trillion dollar tax breaks such as in December 2017 ($2,300,000,000,000 US dollars to billion dollar corporations) while most Americans can only afford to purchase used vehicles ❤.
Really great choices there. Top pick would definitely be the Jazz or Yaris. Tiny nuggets are perfect for the average person who only needs a grocery getter & has a small family.
I recently bought a 2018 higher spec Yaris.Pretty fast with the 1500cc engine, nice looking alloy wheels and quite fun to drive. The audio sound quality is good too.Great fuel economy and very comfortable and quiet. The SX has an air of quality about it.I like the fact that it still has an ignition key, real handbrake, auto transmission not CVT.The big single windscreen wiper is cool too.I'm an old guy so I prefer older tech.Tried and true.Anyway I paid NZ$12,000 for it and the new ones are about $28,000 after govt. clean car rebate.
Love the mention of the PriusC - such a cool little car and they have the handling of a go-kart, and even if you rag it you'll still get better fuel economy than just about everything else on the list.
I agree with the previous comment about the Skoda Fabia and/or VW Polo being in the list. Having owned my Polo from new in 2015 and currently with 120000 km on the clock with not as much as blown fuse or even a light bulb I have been hugely impressed since day 1. Wish you'd do a Polo review at some point. I'd offer you mine to test but you'd have to come to Melbourne to do it.
The Jazz is a beautiful car to drive and can take some pretty substantial abuse too (was my driving instructor's car) but the other car I'd add to this list as I'd say it fit more in this category than next week's is the Hyundai Getz (and not just because I own one) as they can fit a fair bit into them plus I see multiple businesses using them as company cars because of the reliability of them. A few candidates for next week's list that I think will fit the bill are; Mazda 3 Honda Civic Hyundai Accent Ford Focus Nissan Pulsar Mercedes W123 Look forward to Friday's video as always guys and keep up the good work 👍.
We had few Getz in company fleet, reliable but didn't age well. 100,000km versions felt more tired than 200,00km Japanese rivals. With 100 000kms on clock still far more reliable new GM Spark replacements that spent more time in garage than on the road. We replaced Sparks with used Yaris.
We bought a 2013 Mazda 2 as our 2nd car (after the 2003 Nissan March gave up the ghost) and wow are we happy with it. It looks great and is loads of fun to drive, manouverable, and plenty practical for its size. I've driven a Jazz before and it was a dull and uncomfortable experience, my other choice in this segment would've been a Yaris.
First, I just subscribed because you care about your viewers pockets! Second, no beating around the bush, straight to the point and that's how I roll! 👍
Reckon the Mitsubishi Mirage should have been in there. Got one brand new in 2013 for $13,000. It was great to drive (manual of course) awesome on fuel and absolutely NOTHING went wrong with it in 5 years
The more fuel-efficient direct alternative to the Yaris would be the Vitz Hybrid, which is the exact same car and is available in Australia as a grey import.
The days of cheap new, small cars seems to be gone. I bought a Holden Spark in 2017 for $14,200 all on road costs included. Haven't had a single issue with mine to date!
True basically Unless you want one of those rubbish MG3's the only way to get anything half decent now is going to a car warehouse and seeing whatever exists in a Golf/Mazda3/Corolla class car for less money than the new age tiny tiddlers.I had a used Spark from 2018-2021(2017 model)which was written off by a truck some two years ago.The Mercedes prime mover that totalled it was back on the road within weeks but mine was off to the wreckers a month later.Since replaced with a 2008 Mazda 3.for 30% of the price of the Fiat 500 I was looking to get and through the leasing company was about to get the ball rolling on to buy It's not all that bad.
Buy the Yaris. I've seen too many of those things as loaners at many mechanics shop. Might be an odd indication of reliability but mechanics are least likely to maintain their loan cars yet demand minimal maintenance and maximum reliability.
A Yaris or jazz used ones would be the most rational choices. A used Kia ceed sw as a familiar car. For pocket rockets, a susuki swift or a ds3 racing. With a few miles and prior generations, a hybrid Corolla.
@@montyspearoif it is the DSG it can be expensive. They recommend replacing the gear oil at 75 km or earlier. If that is not done then avoid. Otherwise they should chug along.
This should be a video from 5 years ago. I recently test drove the entry-level Swift GL in 2023. The car dealer said it would cost AU$26,000. He also said this was the lowest price with a special discount🙄️,btw, Now, where can I buy any model of Toyota under 20k in all Australia? That’s a dream….😢
Toyota/Honda/Mazda, you can't go wrong. Honda wins on the interior, in my opinion, but you can't go past the all 'round abilities of the Mazda. Note: If you're looking at Mazda's, their manuals are by far, better than their autos. Honestly, I wouldn't take a second look at the Yaris variants unless they were hybrids. That said though, a mate of mine has one and loves it. There were lots of excellent choices in this presentation. Once again, another top job by re driven.
Go classic Austin/ Rover Mini - small, nippy, iconic, and hilarious to drive. Your knees almost touch your chest!. Cool & fun factor 10/10. Watch out for rust though. £12.5 to £15k upwards for a decent one. Tiny home, tiny care, BIG personality profile! If money is no object, fit a Ferrari engine. ) 0 to 60 sub 3 sec!! (Saw it on a minimaniac car mag 20 yrs ago!!)
I got a yaris a brand new 2024. I just wish i had bought the manual transmisión, but it was a 6 month wait time so ended up with the cvt. Very comfortable car with all the bells and whistles. They discontinued the honda fit and the nissan nothe in north america can, usa,mx. So i wasnt able to ger a fit or a note.
The average small car these days is about the size of a first generation Commodore or a second generation Camry if one thinks about it.yes there is the micro and light car class but I wouldn't drive anything smaller than a Golf or a Corolla or an I30 or a Mazda 3 if IT can be helped.
love your channel since discovered yesterday. have watched a bunch of videos to research into a second hand buy. would you talk about import car insurance or is there a video already?
If l was going to buy a small car the choice is very good the Suzuki Swift exelent the Honda Jazz exelent the Toyota Jazz exelent and the Toyota Yaris another exelent choice but l am not looking for a small car but another great list as for the Kia Cartatto l pretty sure that is one of the cheapest cars available in Australia new
I always think the Mazda 2 looks pretty sharp on the very rare occasion you see one with the mazdaspeed bodykit on it, and they're quite fun to drive, but I do think they're a bit gloomy inside with the tiny rear windows.
My pick wasn’t mentioned but my money would have gone on the Mitsubishi mirage Hello Kitty Edition as it has class and purrs along any freeway. As they weren’t availability Australia when I bought a new car I got a Kia Rio SX manual, that was 22k new!
What are your thoughts on Skoda Fabia or VW Polo to buy? Heard their 1 litre turbo DSG can do up to 900 kms on a single tank. The only setback is the 95 fuel which is on the more expensive side 😊
I wouldn't trust ANY dual-clutch transmission. Not only do they break, but they are jerky and indecisive in operation. The Jazz packaging is awesome. I bought one new in 2004 with a young family but after 8 yrs and 130000km, the CVT gave up the ghost.
Seriously good report but the super economical Prius C and enjoyable driving can't be put in the same sentence. It is tinny when you shut the doors. Not a contender if you are genuine about the criteria. The Yaris scrapes in with the 1.5 manual. No CVT is a driver's car. An earlier gen. Jazz had a proper torque converter auto and was a sweet car.
Here in the States we don't have the Kia Picanto. The US government is busy giving trillion dollar tax breaks such as in December 2017 ($2,300,000,000,000 US dollars to billion dollar corporations) while most Americans can only afford to purchase used vehicles 😢.
Suzuki Swift and Suzuki in general (late model) have little safety features when compared to other models they’re a budget model but still ask premium prices
Recent models have certainly been priced into the stratosphere, eroding and trace of value. It's a shame because even the base models now come with LED lights, proximity entry, keyless start and climate control air!
This is just wrong. From 2018 the lowest ANCAP was 4 and most were 5. The sport was absolutely loaded with all safety features and is economical and more rapid than many cars in the next category. HPpy owner.
A 2017 model hybrid could be iffy, battery-wise. It would probably be a NiCd battery, not a lithium-ion, and they are heavier, and less reliable. So before long, you will be replacing the battery.
I really like the Picanto, as it's all the car I really need for my typical use - if only the 4-speed auto gearbox wasn't out of the dark ages. A 6-speed auto, or even (spit) a CVT would tip the balance for me.
Honda Fit/Jazz would rank highly on such a list. Source: A 190cm tall dude whose (now ex) wife has a Jazz that she bought new 18 years ago, which I've driven quite a bit over that time.
A safe buy and I off topic a little was looking at E46 318I EXECUTIVES to replace my 2017 Holden Spark after that was written off(I was driving in a rental Astra at the Time when thoughts of BMW AND Mercedes entered my brains).Reliability and upkeep even though I have a local BMW Mechanic for servicing for less than dealer prices is what put me off coupled with nightmare stories of what my neighbours daughter went through with her Beemer.I went with a Mazda 3(after seeking out new 2's and Fiat 500's and second hand Kia's)at the end of the day.
It's too small. In fact if one values their safety all of these I find are too small. After getting pranged from the rear by a truck when I had my Holden Spark I won't drive anything smaller than a Golf class car.In fact in such classes if you get rear ended by something of a similar size not much damage except reporting to police and insurance and getting to the crash shop for repairs which takes about a week to 10 days overall. If one is in the tiny tots it's off to hospital or the car is a total loss and a write off.
20k through import monster will get a 2022 mazda2 or any of those cars better and cheaper delivered to your door, it'll just take 8 weeks. let the scum dealerships here go broke.
If it doesn't have to be new scour the market at a car warehouse for an earlier but current 2 or buy a bigger 3 or cx3 if it has to be a Mazda on the used market.I for the fraction of the price of a new 2 pure some two years ago landed a 2008 Mazda 3 for about 30% of the price of the new tiny tiddlers.while not perfect it does the job of being something better than the public transport system.
