If you want Carlie on your team, always set her in your third character slot. Normally when you reach the seal, you get your second party member, and you get your third character in the prison. Carlie however always joins in the same spot, so you can exploit this fact to unlock your entire party early. That crab boss in the video? Much easier with a full party.

I'm coming back 10 months after watching this video and playing the game. I recently beat it, and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! Everything was so fun! BEST RPG EVER (In my opinion)!

I've played Seiken Densetsu 3 multiple times through! My brother and I did it a few summers in a row while he was in college, which was super fun. It's a great game.

I ended up playing this game because of your recommendation. And... yeah, it's one of the best SNES games I've ever played. I'm just gonna say it, it's better than Secret of Mana. Like, WAY better. I really wish it had been released in the States, because I'm positive it would be considered a classic if it had been. So thanks, Jeff, for letting us know about it!

As soon as you said branching classes, I knew I had to play this game.

This game was my first JRPG ever. I played it with my dad when I was 4 and many many more times over the years. I obviously didn't know that it was in any way illegal. I also didn't know that there was no legal and legitimate way to buy this game in my country so I'd say it was no harm done. I love this game so much and when I heard that the were bringing it to the west AND remaking it? I cried my eyes out, I was so happy. Nobody understood why but this game is very important to me. Not only was it my first JRPG and made me fall in love with the genre. I don't have many happy memories of my dad and playing the game together is definitely one of them. I know that it probably doesn't hold up to modern standards and the remake definitely fixed some of that but I will always love the original. The characters, the combat and the replayability are so great, you can absolutely forgive the unoriginal story and the grinding. "You're the chosen hero, go save the world" was an acceptable story for RPGs when this game first came out and I won't hold that against it. The remake didn't change the story but in direct comparison it feels worse than the original. The remake is a Super Nintendo game, that plays like a PS2 game and looks like a PS4 game. That paired with the lacking story and the gameplay loop of "Getting told where to go and fighting monsters on the way there" wasn't the best of all moves. They had no reason to assume that there would be love for this game in the west and they still brought it over AND remade it. It felt like they were doing it just for me :)

My rule for emulation is that if the IP owners dont give you a way to purchase said game then i am allowed it pirate since they choose not to give me a way to buy their product.

0:57 That is a sad common misconception. The emulator software itself is not illegal, and even emulating the games isn't illegal, it's how people generally tend to get a hold of these games. If you have the means to rip your own personal games to your computer for emulating, that is PERFECTLY LEGAL as long as you do not redistribute the files. People tend to think emulation is illegal because getting games online itself is illegal and is connected with the aformentioned redistribution... this piracy tends to be the primary method that most obtain games to play through these emulators, but are NOT the only games you can play through the software-- again, if you can rip your own games to your computer, that is covered under fair use. Downloading games off of the internet is illegal, emulation is perfectly legal. We good? We clear? Cool. High five.

I played this game for the first time when i was like 10 years old, now i'm 24 and i still love replaying it. It is my favorite game of all time and it makes me so happy to see someone giving it the promotion it well deserves. Good for you mate, keep up the good work!

If anyone is wondering, the game finally got an official English release on Switch, as a part of Collection of Mana. And the official English name is Trials of Mana. The remake also has the same name, Trials of Mana, and is a multiplatform title.

I used to love this game, played a lot as a kid, it's nice to see someone finally covering it! My team was Duran-Kevin-Angela. When Angela helps you break out from Jad prison she seduces the guard by literally showing her butt to him. Also, if you make Carlie your 3rd character, she'll appear earlier than the other characters, when you're still in the caves!

I played this game on an Snes Emulator back in 2001. Best time of my life.

THIS GAME IS FUCKING AWESOME and i cant belive some one is actually talking about it! No one fucking acknowledges this master piece,100 times better than its prequel. The first time i played it was back on the first XBOX days,it had an SNES emulator and over 300 games installed,one day while looking for a decent one i came across this one called Seiken Densetsu 3,thankfully it was patched so i could play it on english,and oh man,i spend the whole year playing it,i even ignored my other consoles and videogames just because i was freaking hooked with this little gem! One day i went to a friends house (like i used to do back then) and brought my Xbox,took it out of my backpack,started the game right after the fight against Bigieu on the dark casttle and he couldnt believe how awesome this SNES ARPG was,it has so much replayability,i even wrote my own class log for every character,i was determined to play every single one with every single team combination and class advancements i could think of,it was amazing. Last time i replayed it was about a month a go on my PC and i still have the very same class change log i wrote back in those days! OMG,very few games have hooked me like this one.,i higly recomend it.

Secret of Mana killed every aspect of Action RPGS. It was the best one on the system. It's just sooooo good. Played this with my bro and we still have fond memories of this.

It finally happened Hammy, they finally acknowledging it

Everything about this game is so underrated - choose your own characters to customize the story, a fully working day/night cycle and implications of using certain elements on certain days of the calender, character classes and fantastic world design and music. The only two things I hope they can fix in this remake are how excessive the grinding is to change classes to proceed with the next part of the game and also the process you have to do to evolve into your final class.

I discovered this game the same way you did! If it weren't for all the people who took time out of their lives to translate Japan-only titles and share the roms online for free, there would be so many amazing stories that we would miss out on. Thank you for doing this review and reminding me of an amazing game that I SO need to revisit!

The first Seiken Densetsu game was actually remade into a GBA release called Sword of Mana and it's my favorite RPG of all time.

When this video came out, I was in awe of this game. For the last few years it has effected basically every purchase I’ve made in terms of rpg games. I might not have found my love for the genre if not for this video. I am so, ridiculously happy that this game was released in English officially for the first time today. I first discovered this game, and an early version of the fan translation AGES ago... Showed it to all of my friends and we all really got into it. One of them ended up writing a very comprehensive guide for GameFAQs. Needless to say when I learned about SD3, I was psyched, because SOM was one of my favorite SNES games as a kid.

OMIGOSH I'M EARLY. Well, by the laws of RU-vid, I am entitled to make a joke, so... Uuh... What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh! ...I'm so clever.

Love the game, love the review. One thing. If you're going to take Carly as your NOT main character, pick her third. You'll get character #2 in front of the blocked tunnel, and Carly where he showed her. Then you have all three before the first boss. Not super important, but it's a cool little thing.

Emulation was a huge part of my childhood and i found seiken densetsu 3 that way too! very relatable video.

This game SO deserves a remake. Like, I'm not into remakes, but this one does. Playing it online with revamped graphics and music would be gorgeous.

Just finished this game. I can easily say this is one of the best RPG games I ever played. I played it many years ago without knowing Japanese (Yeah, I'm stucked because the objectives are really tricky!). But the music, the class diversity, and the story are still amazing to me.. I love it so much.

A great JRPG series I recently got into is the Tales series after having played Tales of Vesperia on Xbox and I really wish more games were localized here. The older ones looked really great and it's such a shame many of us not in Japan can't play them. If I could get ANY JRPG localized it would be Tales of Phantasia (for being the first Tales game) and Tales of Rebirth (for looking really cool).

From my perspective summaries this... PLAY SEIKEN DENSETSU 3 PEOPLE U WONT REGRET IT. LITERALLY it rocked my childhood.

One of my all time favourite games is Seiken Densetsu 4, more commonly known as Legend of Mana. And not just for the soundtrack, either. I didn't realize there was such a strong, deliberate nod to SD3 in terms of graphics and sprite animation until now.

Yes finally someone talking about this game, holy shit this is one of my favourite games of all time. I finished it so many times when I was young... I went out and bought a Japanese copy of this game out of respect when I started earning money. Seriously one of the biggest Sins in gaming history having this not being released for the west.... Along with like none of the secret of mana games after this even holding a candle to the greatness of this game...

Trials of Mana now available on the Nintendo Switch! With an entirely new translation!

I recently found a Super Nintendo at a flea market for a good price, and bought it. Later on, I found a good reproduction cartridge of Secret of Mana, and binge-played that until I completed it. The same seller who made Secret of Mana's reproduction cart also made some of the English fan translation of Seiken Densetsu 3, so I dunno. Thanks, Hammy. Time to take the plunge.

pssst There's a Seiken Densetsu 4 on ps1. It's called Legend of Mana. It lets you forge weapons, farm, raise monsters, make spell casting instruments and you can make Robots. Also you can play 2p. Also it has multiple quest paths. Also it's the greatest RPG of all time, ever... So go and play it (it's on the psn).
