I do this for a living but on a much larger scale. I work at a phosphate plant. I work on the NaK side (sodium potassium) we have a calcium side as well) all our products are made using Soda Ash, Sodium Hydroxide Solution aka NaOH, aka caustic. Potassium Hydroxide aka KOH, 85% Phosphoric Acid, and Sodium Chlorate. I’ll have a recipe and specific guidelines. Depending on the product I’ll use Soda Ash and acid and boil and mix them together in a reactor at a specific temperature, specific gravity, and pH. Then they flow into adjust tanks where once it’s reached the desired level I’ll adjust it with a mixture of Acid and KOH or Acid and NaOH. I’ll then test the samples on a titrator using HCI and .5 NaOH. I’ll adjust it till I’ve reached the desired pH and ratio. The dump it to a feed tank and add anywhere between 5-10 gallons of sodium chlorate. Then that goes to the D&C where they make the final product (granular or powder)

Nah sodium is a pretty safe reactive metal to do a demo with, our science teacher actually had a student help him with most of his reactive metal demos he'd set everything up and give a kid a beaker with a long stick or gripper attached to it they would tip the metal out of the beaker into the water
@hamwise881
@hamwise881 9 месяцев назад
@ashrowan2143 what the hell are you talking about? Sodium is very dangerous, as is the byproduct of this reaction. At minimum, every one of those kids should be wearing goggles. In reality, this demo should be done in a ventilation hood with the door down, then you rinse the hood walls with vinegar when you're done. This is a very unwise way to do this demo, and that teacher needs safety training.

@EstonianShark
@EstonianShark 9 месяцев назад
@@hamwise881 Small amounts of Sodium and water react to make NaOH and H2 (hydrogen gas) this is how it was taught to us. 0 fume hood and no glasses. If you were to present a flame to the hydrogen gas then it would be problematic but it's such a small amount that the hydrogen gas formed is negligible. I've done this multiple times with a teacher who achieved a Masters in Organic Chemistry. However the fact he threw in 2 chunks and it splashed that much is definitely worrisome, he put in too much but the demo itself (putting some sodium into water) is safe.
@hamwise881
@hamwise881 9 месяцев назад
@EstonianShark the main danger here IS the NaOH. The explosion sprays that stuff everywhere. It is extremely caustic and WILL cause blindness if a kid gets it in his eye. It will also eat their clothing and cause skin burns. It doesn't hurt at first, but a minute after getting it on you, it hurts and your skin sloughs off. So yeah, this should be done behind a screen, or AT LEAST with the kids farther away and with goggles. This isn't a fun day at the carnival. Safety in science is important. If you wouldn't do it in a lab without safety protocols, you shouldn't do it in front of kids. If this guy worked at a college, he'd be reprimanded.

By dad said in high school in the 70s they used to crystallize iodine and throw it on the stairs in the hallways because they were basically geniuses and bored. It’s basically pop caps like you get during the 4th of July. You throw them on the ground they make loud pop noises and make the stairs purple.

I don’t remember what he mixes the iodine with, I think hydrogen chloride.

We use most of that stuff every day at work between boiler water and green liquor tests. Interesting.

My chemistry teacher once told me that once some bullies in her high school found out about this, they broke into the chemistry class storage room and took a big chunk of the stuff and dropped it into a school toilet. It cracked the toilet, and they got into lots of trouble for that one.

2Na + 2H2O --> 2NaOH + H2 + Heat Sodium After Reacting with water, NaOH formed , That's why water turned into pink colour.

My Chemistry teacher did this using a test tube and larger chunk of sodium. The shrapnel from the resulting explosion lacerated a student on the cheek and another across the forearm. Bits of glass were found along the back wall 20 feet away.

Did a similar experiment in our science class and a small piece of sodium flew and hit a kids eye and there was chaos after that. Luckily it hid the eyelid and almost burnt a hole through it.

As soon as I saw the sodium headed for the water, I knew they ought to take a step or two back. Alkali metals are highly reactive with water.
@owengeorge4322
@owengeorge4322 9 месяцев назад
Theres a reason why sodiums group is called the alkali metals. They make alkaline solutions in water. Along with setting on fire, exploding and turning moleten in the process
