Question from me is what masters should I obtain from the mastering studio other than 16 -bit 44.1kHz for store distribution for me to have on file. For example, I read that it’s good to have a 24-bit 44.1kHz for Apple Digital Masters and higher quality service options and that you can also use 24-bit 48kHz for RU-vid videos (e.g music and lyric videos)? So from that would I be best to obtain: - 16-bit 44.1kHz - 24-bit 44.1kHz - 24-bit 48kHz To cover all options for distribution and down the track such as film placements, etc etc? Thanks 😊
one thing with ableton is that there are several dither settings, which doesnt get addressed in your DAW, do you know anything about this? and do you recommend just running our whole session in 44.1 - 16bit so when were mixing, we have an accurate representation of how our song is going to sound? or should i run my session in 48khz - 32bit and downsample/dither to 44.1khz - 16bit on export?
I am changing distributors right now and it really sucks...my old album was in 24 bit, but the new distributor only accepts 16... uuuurgh now after watching your video I actually know that this is a good thing ;)
So you think uploading 16/44 to distrokid is better than 24/44? im genuinely asking, not trying to prove you wrong lol, i trust your knowledge and am wondering if i should switch it up, i came from analog/tape/cd world when i learned originally, so i use to always do 16/44, and i always dithered, but in daw ive got in habit of 24/44, and stopped dithering, cause i figured the apps its going out to are gonna possibly knock it down to 16 and dither it in process, so i figured better to go high incase any apps accept 24bit, and not dither incase they knock it down....am i all backwards with it? I’m confused, why is it so crucial to submit a wav file if the streaming platforms are going to convert to mp3? Wouldn’t it be better to be in control of that conversion if it’s going to inevitably happen anyway?
I should also add that’s it’s essential to use high quality lossless formats for CD’s and Vinyl, aswell for future editing. MP3 is lossy, it will lose quality over and over every time it is edited by you or the distributer.. Which causes the quality to “REALLY SUCK” If you want an example, I’d recommend exporting an mp3 at a very low bit rate, so you can hear for yourself.. But music production rule number one “Never use lossy formats”
It really depends on what the goal is and how the song is mixed. It might be unnecessarily conservative. But you bring up a good point that for really loud dense mixes, -1 dbFS could still have some intersample peaks. Whether or not you can hear them is another story haha!
So I followed the steps in this video and I also check the bit depth, sample rate requirements, and even video requirements, of any streaming sites I upload to in WAV format, to make sure that it doesn't ruin the quality of my audio but I still have the same problem. I also checked my computer (macbook pro) and made sure my internal EQ was turned off. But still the quality never sounds as good on streaming sites as it does on my DAW. Any idea why this is?
Your aggregator will be sending the files out and many still only accept 16 bit. So if the platform they send to accepts 24 bit there will not be any loss other than just having a lower dynamic range from the 16 bit file compared to 24 bit. But if you submit 24 bit and the streaming service only accepts 16 bit, then they will decide how to convert the audio from 24 to 16 bit. Some may just truncate and others might use a noiseshaped dither. The concern here is that we don't get to choose. Whether you will be able to hear the differences is hard to say - to be honest, you probably won't be able to hear any difference. Recording is another story though and I have a video on that as well. But when recording, you could probably get an improvement in quality when recording at 24 BIT. Hope that helps! Cheers, Bobby
The label asked me to send them the file in 16 -bit but i bounced in 24-bit. Is there a way to convert this without issues? That is: to convert the final bounce I sent in 24-bit to 16-bit successfully? Thanks.
I would use r8brain it's free and an incredible sample rate and bit depth converter! There is a link to that in my free plugin guide. I would recommend dithering when going to 16 bit from 24 bit as well (that is standard practice). Hope that helps!
I always produced in 44.1 Khz. Do you think music platforms may stop accepting 44.1 Khz in near future? Or we don't have to worry about it? They're always requesting higher standards for artwork pictures and all
I struggle to get clear vocals. There is a small hint of a hiss-iness😊 after export. I do not know if it is too much compression or saturation. I work in 48KHZ 32bit. Export a quick reference as mp3 48khz. Can it be my export settings or the way I mix my vocals? When I listen during mixing phase it sounds great, only when export and listen back especially via mobile phone it is a bit too much hiss. Not sibilance. A hissiness kinds of soft gentle scratchy ness too the vocals that its not there when I mix or completed the mix.
When it comes to exporting I always go with 16 bits, 44.1/48 KHz depending on the source (if the source is 96 KHz I convert it to 48 KHz first) and no dither at all. For a nice WAV file. I also export an MP3 file so the client can listen to the master on his/her phone.
@@RaytownProductions both are excellent. FL Studio went pretty far from what it was and IMO L, it's the best DAW for the price (lifetime free upgrades). Mixbus is also affordable, and besides some instability issues it's very good for quick mixing and mastering.

I use ableton live 10 with m-audio fastrack windows 10..I am asking because when I rendered/exported my file into wave..it gives crackling sound in the start..I dont know why this is happening?? Because in my DAW it is sounding completely fine and I gave a lil bit headroom to not distorting it..Should I export in 16bit dither on..?? Please help..
Crackling means you are likely clipping something. My guess is that your song is starting without a small fade into your song. If you export any audio even if it's a tiny tiny bit without the signal starting at 0, it will make a click or a crackle sound. If you have enough headroom so that you aren't going above 0 dbfs, then try adding a very short fade to the beginning of your song. In this case exporting your song at higher sample rates or bit depth will not help you.
@@RaytownProductions thanks for all the info..and calmly listening my problem..I have one question that " suppose my project that I am working on is on 16bit..what if I change my projects bit depth in the middle of the working project like 16 to 24 or even 24 to 16..(not while exporting but while working on the project)...will it affect or ruin my project?? Or I can change it without worrying my project getting destroyed or ruined.. P.s there is no recording track in my project..all the instrument are programmed with midis..
@@SAGE1991 I think either way it really won't affect your project too much. Depending on your DAW, when you render your midi instruments, they will likely match the project settings that you have. So if you start your session at 16 bit and then change it to 24 bit, in theory your rendered midi files would then have the dynamic range of a 24-bit WAV file. So that's what I would recommend you do when you export your music. Worst case your audio files might be larger without any increase in dynamic range. Hope that helps!
Oh no! Encoding to lossy formats for streaming will increase the volume, and can have a "compressed" sound to it if your masters are super loud. That extra db of headroom can help in most cases.
wtf are you all talking?) in EDM you can easy hear that bass and highs thrown away when you render your track in 16bit from DAW. You can hear it anywhere. Car, Iphone, Studio monitors. You mix your track in 32bitfloat (which means 24bit) and then if you render it out in 16bit you will lose half of a file you make. You can hear that track is not the same as you made it in your DAW. Of course you have to render 24bit always lol. And release your music in24bit for Spotify. Cause you made your music in project in 24bit. Fl studio and others are 24bit inside the DAW.
Maybe I did a bad job explaining this in the video, but I'm sorry to say that isn't correct at all. But depth doesn't determine frequency reproduction. Thats determined by sampling rate. Bit depth simply determines your base noise floor.
