Best sounding trumpet ever?! Best sounding trumpet in my personal collection for sure! This is one I will never sell, a 1940 Besson Brevete with a few modifications (and a bunch of patches).
I bought this horn online and it was absolutely trashed. My dear friend Josh Landress did a great job restoring this horn for me. Check out his shop page here: www.jlandressb...
There's basically zero compression even though the valves look pretty great. I specifically asked Josh not to rebuild the valves because I wanted to maintain the beautiful sound of this horn. That does come at the expense of playability, though. I have to work so much harder to play this horn than with my brand new Adams horns or my rebuilt Olds Super Recordings. Best sounding horn I own, but sadly not the one I can be taking to gigs.
Why not just buy another Besson Brevete and restore the valves? I actually tried that (with a very close serial number) and it just wasn't the same.
Everyone tried to copy Besson designs. Bach, Benge, King Liberty... If you find one of these great Bessons IMO it's a great horn to have in your collection even if it's not the best playing instrument.
We do have a TON of great vintage trumpets available on the web store at www.austincust...

I have owned and am still in possession of a French Besson Brevete. Serial #92195, so it is an old timer that I have had for the last 57 or 58 years... me being 76 years old now. These Brevete's always had that certain sound. Thanks for the video... brings back memories!

A lot of valves are worn on old Bessons because people played the snot out of them, they were true work horses back in the day.

TA, this indeed is your best sounding jazz horn. Wow. Lots of character for sure and you sounds more comfortable on it than you let on.

Thanks for watching! As much as it sounds that I'm comfortable on the horn I am working like CRAZY to make the horn work due to the valve compression issues.

I really enjoyed this video in particular because I really like vintage horns and in fact, did a similar thing with a lesser known brand of trumpet. That was a Gretch Pathfinder from the 1930s. It’s repair was fantastic and I think it’s cool that your sharing this sort of video! I really enjoyed it!

I know Couesnon made the Gretch horns in the 50's but not sure about the 30's.

Best horn I ever played was an old French Besson. That horn was magical. It belonged to my late trumpet teacher and when I was in Grad School many decades ago, I got to play it in a lesson and I was immediately surprised by the action, effortless response, projection and the tone. I was playing a new Kanstul Benge then which was a fine Benge but this horn was on another level. Now I also have a Martin Committee among my small collection and I just love how the Committee plays but I’ll never forget that French Besson. Thanks for the interesting testimony to a fine old classic the French Besson.

Wonderful sounding trumpet and player! I have been lucky enough to play one in pretty good shape and was amazed. I'll sometimes use a mixture - 1/2 key oil &1/2 valve oil to get a feel for how a horn with leaking valves could potentially sound. Easy test without doing any harm.

yeah I use Berp #3 and spindle oil as well. Still leaks like a sieve.

Damn Trent! You sound great! I got an old '39 NY Strad you all did a fantastic job on! I feel the same way about the efficiency with it as well.

Sounds Really nice man!! Wondering if you could make a comparison video with your Adams A1 gen. 2 and The Adams A5 raw brass... Great videos btw! Thanks
@austincustom
@austincustom 3 года назад
The Excalibur has sold and comparing a used a5 to a new A1 Gen II isn't probably the best comparison to be honest. I could compare a new A5 to a new A1. If you have a specific question about the A5 please email us at info@austincustombrass.com

I fell in love with the reissue F Besson trumpet in 1983 at Rayburns Boston unfortunately at the time it was almost 3x the price of Bach at the time. I still struggle to not trade away my 2 69 Seversons for one remarkable horn

those low tones are superb . When you say it works you . Is that meant to say you have to keep a tighter emboursure to not chip/ intonation the note . ? A higher level of contentration .? More air ? Exactly what. I have noticed that on pro horns vrs student level . Thanks

Wow that horn sounds amazing. I'm not crazy about that Phil Collins (I think) excerpt you play but this time, even if it is harder to play, it sounded so rich and yet with an edge

Beautiful! I love my Schilke B3L, but regret to this day that I sold my 1974 Strad. The Schilke plays MUCH better, but the Strad had an amazing sound. VERY sweet. BTW Trent - I visited your ACB site. I had NO IDEA that you were such an industry giant. I love the org that you've built. It reminds me a lot of Taylor Music in Aberdeen, SD. I actually visited their store and had a blast. I'll make a trip once this whole COVID mess is over. Looking forward to meeting the legend!

GREAT SOUND!! Are the valve issues a product of previous use and abuse or are they more of a factory thing? I ask this because the horn is 80 years old. Are valve tolerances just better today in the manufacturing process? I have a question, Mr. Austen, about your use. Why not get a double or triple trumpet case, throw this in the case along with your "primary" horn and use this occasionally during a gig? I knew another trumpeter who did that. He had a trumpet that he loved, but had so many issues he just did not want to deal with on a gig for the entire gig and would pull out his beloved trumpet for the "special" songs. Just a suggestion from a non-trumpet player. Great sounding trumpet. I understand why you will never sell it.
