I wonder if part of it is the expense of getting the testing done to be able to claim spf. Many, if not most, pigments used in lipsticks are iron oxides, so there is a bit of protection just from that (as long as the lipstick is fairly covering).
Honestly I feel like I need to thank you for really opening my eyes to the importantance of sun protection. In the last 3 or so months I have seriously upped my game in skincare concerning spf. I thought I was taking good care of my skin then I found your channel and binge watched for days. I'm happy to say I use spf daily as well as trying to avoid fragrance as much as possible. Honestly you're a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate your videos. My current faves are CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizer and Clinique's SPF 50 Mineral Fluid. I'm also a huge fan of the Supergoop! lip spf.
Favorite lip sunscreen is Aquaphor!!! Aquaphor!!! Aquaphor!!! I use Aquaphor on my kids.. I cant move on with my day without Dr.Dray in the morning.. thank you Dr.Dray!!! Love your videos soo much!
Even since I started to follow your videos, my skincare routine simplified so much. 🤗 and yet my skin looks better than ever. Thanks for all the reviews and demystify all the ingredients.
Excellent topic! Also, to my fellow folks with sensitive eyes/blepharitis, I've found that the vanicream lotion makes for an excellent "pm eye cream" that doesn't irritate or sting. Update: the vanicream lip spf is my favorite. It doesn't sting like the chemical one I had been using and it's very moisturizing.
Qanh Music I use that, too. Isn’t it great, to have such affordable, fragrance free products available? I was sure, I would have to order something pricey, but low and behold....🙂
I am just so thrilled that you focus on wearing sunscreen on the lips. As I have said before in your comment section, my husband is a lip cancer survivor. He did not smoke or use any tobacco products. But has very fair skin, and we grew up in a time no one even considered wearing sunscreen, especially on the lips. He was fortunate that the plastic surgeon was able to reconstruct his lip and got ALL the cancer. 👍 This happened many years ago, and so we do not go in the sun at all unless we are wearing sunscreen EVERYWHERE, plus hats. If we ever go to the beach or a pool, we always bring an umbrella. And of course, we wear sunscreen everyday as well! This means that even though we are in our upper 50's, we still have very nice skin!! THANK YOU, DR. DRAY!! MY HERO👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😀❤💖💕
You are so right. I have had actinic cheilitis removed from my lower lip three times. I have been wearing a lip sunscreen since the first was frozen off 3 years ago, but my lip has become super sensitive. I want to up my sun protection game. What product are you using? My dermatologist wants me to look for spf50 moisture resistant lip sunscreen, but had no recommendations.
@@sharonmitchel1377 My husband buys his own lip products. He always buys 50+ SPF. The most important thing is to reapply often!! He loves to work outside in our garden, so he keeps his SPF lip balm in his pocket. Good luck to you, and you will get better!
@@Patti-1962 thank you. I think I am going to try sunsense spf 50 moisturizing lip balm that is good for 4 hours (though I will reapply more frequently!). It seems to check all the boxes and is under $13 on Amazon. I grew up in California using baby oil with iodine so lots of damage. My lips are the only serious scare so far.
The SunSense is absolutely my favourite. You’re not wrong when you said it’s an Aussie favourite. All our chemists stock it, it’s really very cheap (about $8), and is both moisturising and has high SPF protection. As an Australian who lives in Queensland (which is even worse for UV than the rest of the country), I don’t bother with anything less than SPF 50. I just don’t see the point. I also am prone to hyperpigmentation on my lips, so a very high SPF lip balm for me is an absolute must! I tend to prefer Aussie sunscreens, and if not Aussie, then Japanese or Korean. But when it comes to SPF lip balm, SunSense is where it’s at! We love the stuff here. It’s a real pity it’s not easily available in the States. It’s fragrance and flavour free. There’s no taste at all. I’ve heard that the reason Aussie sunscreens (including this one) aren’t available in the States is that we use more chemical UV protect ants that aren’t FDA approved. But honestly, we Aussies do take our sunscreen very seriously (those of us that use them, that is), because the sun here is just ridiculous. Highest UV in the world. So our sunscreens need to be broad spectrum (pretty sure they’re all broad spectrum, at least the ones I see being sold as sunscreens), and high SPF. The FDA needs to hurry up and approve the new UV filters, because they’re so far behind!
Girl, same. I'm American (Irish and Swedish heritage, among others), and my dermo said," Fifty is YOUR minimum." $8 AUD? If so, holy shit, you're right! USD, that's ~$4. BUT: I recently heard Sunsense pulled their products from the shelves cause their SPF rating is SUPPOSEDLY inaccurate. Is this true, do you know? Plus, all things considered FDA, especially lately, not holding my breath for them. 😁😆
Vanicream is the best. I use the Neutrogena hydro boost to color it up a bit. I never go out of the house even for a few minutes without the Vani. Thank you for the great video, Dr. Dray!
Google User: so sorry! It's funny how everyone is so different. The Elta MD sunscreen and lip protector both left me with irritation and peeling. Vanicream is the only thing that doesn't hurt my lips. Never tried their sunscreen though.
Hello, Dr Dray! In the Japanese Nivea lip ingredient list, I think I found some that you were looking for. I think that メトキシケイヒ酸エチルヘキシル(Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate) and t-ブチルメトキシジベンゾイルメタン(Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane ) are ingredients that prevent UV light. Sorry I'm no good at English but I hope it help you!
As always thanks for the informative video! I would love a video about hair care products for acne prone/sensitive skin. I have such a hard time finding products that won’t irritate or break out my skin. You’re the best Dr. Dray!!!
Hi Dr. Dray, this is my first comment on RU-vid I ever made. 🙂 I like using Neutrogena spf 20. I just want to say thank you so much for giving me insight on skincare and sunscreen information. It’s really good to know that I don’t have to spend a lot money just for good skincare products. Really look forward to your videos. 💕
I love using the vanicream lip SPF that you recommend. I usually let it sink in for a minute and then swipe on some of the Neutrogena lip gloss in the shade radiant Rose. I really like the shine the combo gives to my lips and also that it is protecting my lips from the sun!
Vanicream is my favorite lip spf, which I purchased through your recommendation! Love the texture, lack of fragrance, and the sheer, milky cast it leaves.
I love the Vanicream, I get it in a four pack on Amazon to keep a tube everywhere 😂 in my car, purse, bathroom, by the front door and even in my glasses case! I love your educational videos and am for sure going to try out some of your recommendations you made in this video 😊
Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm has been my favorite SPF lip balm for years. I think I have every color. I too wish it had a higher SPF. I also use it as my blush over my tinted sunscreen. It's so smooth, spreads evenly, and matches my lip color.
I love the Paula’s choice! It goes on thick enough to trust it is protecting. A lot of the other ones don’t go on thick enough for my lip balm preference. Also, I laughed so hard when you said “but it doesn’t have any sunscreen in it so not sure how that worked it’s way in this video.” You always crack me up, I love how you are so transparent and witty! ❤️❤️❤️
I love using vanicream lip protectant sunscreen spf 30 based on your past recommendation. I also enjoy the pink undertone it gives, but it also works great under and over lipsticks! Thanks for another great video, Dr. Dray! I always look forward to watching your channel 😀
You turned me on to the Vanicream lip product.....as someone with a *really* sensitive back-of-the-throat palate (I taste ALLLLL of the sunscreens), this one doesn't have much bitter flavor. It's my current fav!
Heather Adair Smith ~ Thanks for mentioning the lack of scent/taste, as I have the nose of a scent hound. I pick up any trace at all. You gave me confident to try Vanicream Lip SPF. 👍🏻 I have been using Colorescience lip tinted SPF 35, but it requires very frequent application. Plus, it has fragrance.
I have never used an spf lip product before. I honestly never thought about lip protection from the sun. You learn something new everyday! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
VANUCREAM LIP SPF is my daily go to. The thick balmy texture is great adheres really well on to the ear area as well. And yes, I made it all the way through the video!
I’d like to try a mineral sunscreen, thanks for the recommendation. Can you tell me if it dries matte? Do you personally wear it under liquid/cream foundation or powder foundation? Does it clog your pores?
@@CLB134 I have used it under both liquid and powder foundation. It dries matte on the skin. It's not a liquid consistency, more of a thicker cream. I only wear foundation if I'm going out on the weekend. During the week I wear corrector and concealer only, but always start with sunscreen.
The Ultrasun SPF 30 is really good and so is the Muji one and also the one Vanicream makes is good too despite the whitecast it has (I use a colored lipgloss over it). I think lips are often overlooked by people (I know I used to) so I'm really glad to see this video!! ♡ Excellent info as always
Thanks for recommending Vanicream lip! I now buy 5 at a time. I also put a little on the lower inner corner of my eyes where I am getting fine lines-after I’ve put my normal face sunscreen on. It works better than any eye cream or moisturizer I’ve ever used to plump up and get rid of those lines!
My daughter (14 yrs) and I like trying different lip balms. Using a lip balm product with sunscreen that has to be reapplied often. Thank you for the video. Definitely going to try these. 💫
i dont use a lip balm but i will try getting one with spf. I received my cerave products today in the netherlands yay!! got out of the shower, dove right into the moisturizer cream tub and jumped out all slippery smooth, love it! im surprised how fast my skin absorbed all in, no stickyness not greasy.
Hi Dr. Dray, thank you for all the information you share. My skin is a lot better since i started switching to the reliable products and ingredients. Ive been more consious about my purchases. Hope you can also do a video on body wash ingredients to look for.
I use the Vanicream lip SPF. I was bummed by the white cast at first, but it definitely grew on me! I really like it now. Thanks for all the great info!
I like Aquaphor but plan on getting the Vanicream and Pacifica. Never realized there were so many choices! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us & your sweet Mom!
Whoa. That's a lot of lip balm! Im using the Paula's Choice Lipscreen SPF 50 right now. I like it a lot. It goes on clear and doesn't taste or smell weird.
My favourite lip spf is the vanicream one.I love it as its all mineral, does not cause any irritation & has no fruity taste etc.So happy to have found this one, based on ur recommendation.
I wonder if the giveaway is still on... I found out recently about a lip sunscreen that looks pretty promising, it's Coola liplux mineral. It has a sheer tint and it's all mineral. Haven't bought it yet. Anyways loved today's video. Thanks Dr
I used to use the Netruagena lip balm. I liked the color for work and could carry it in my pocket. I would reapply before I would go outside with my preschoolers. 👩🏫 I just bought the mini Vaseline lip balm thanks to another video. I have to get on for my dad since he works in construction and it is always sunny in SoCal
My favourite lip spf is the sunsense spf 50, as it's easy to get hold of in the UK from Amazon. It has a high spf and it's water resistant. Happy Wednesday! 😀
I was literally searching for a new sunscreen lip balm to try like 30 seconds before i saw this vid 😂 I’m currently loving lanolips tinted lip balm w/ spf 30 in rhubarb. Suuuch a great product it keeps my lips moisturized for a long time and also doubles as a gloss/lip tint when it does wear off. Ugh ❤️❤️
Everyone have a awesome day and remember your beautiful and special inside and out no matter what life throws at you. Sending love and prayers @ you.❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘💕💕💕
My favorite spf lippie is the Paula’s Choice one! Since I try not to wear makeup during the week anymore so that I am able to reapply sunscreen, I prefer those that don’t have all these pink and red hues to them since I think it looks odd to wear a bright lip without any foundation coverage. Thanks for always encouraging us that our suncare habits are so important for skin health🤗 my morning vitamin c serum budget quickly became my sunscreen budget after watching your videos 🧴 🌞
Thank you so much! My little guy is very sensitive to sunscreens and your recommendation about coppertone Pure&Simple in one of your videos awhile back was just what we needed - he doesn't break out, and I don't have to walk around looking like a ghost! So when I saw this video, it got me thinking I need to protect my sons from skin cancer on the lip too! I ordered the vanicream right away. I hope he can tolerate it! Because of your guidance, I've decided to set up a sunscreen station by the front door so we all can remember and easily grab what is needed each morning. Your videos are so informative and always help me make informed decisions. I don't have any sort of health insurance and can't go to a doctor, let alone a dermatologist so I really appreciate all your free advice! It can be difficult to weed through all the information out there. I'm turning 30 in a few days and I used to think that was so old! I figured I'd be married and settled by now but I'm wildly single 😂 so it's got me thinking about aging as less of an abstract thing. When you're young 30 seems ancient but now I'm there and I want to take care of the skin I have, and teach my children to do the same. I have a preteen and a soon-to-be teen in a few days from before I came out, and trying to wrestle them and make them use lotion, deodorant, or even hair gel is hard 😂😂😂 they as tall as me. they seem to like the coppertone stuff a lot better, and complain less so thank you for making a tired old cougar mom's job a lot easier💜 my son used to get sent home several times a year from sunscreen, they thought his contact dermatitis was ringworm all over the face 😑 yeah cuz that happens in a day... We were using Babyganics but man does that stuff get chalky if it's over a few months old! I'm really grateful to have a recommendation on a sunscreen for him that is more real. I really enjoy your videos! And while I'm a huge fan of "natural" stuff as much as possible, I'm also a realist on a shoestring budget so I love your comparisons and you got me to put down the organic sunscreen and just breathe! Not everything has to be organic in the house, although organic is the one thing my son has never been allergic to! I'd love to see a video on laundry detergent for people with skin allergies one day! Right now I use Seventh Generation for him but that stuff is not cheap! And I worry about the longterm use of lavender eucalyptus fragrance in the washing liquid
So far, I've been inconsistently using Elizabeth Arden FPS 15 but just came home from a trip to the drugstore with a list of products suggested by Dr Dray.... found some but not many... will try walmart tomorrow and if that doesn't work, then Amazon.... I am progressively replacing all my skin care, body moisturizer, foot cream, etc by products recommended by Dr Dray. So happy and grateful for your work, Dr Dray!
I have the Aquaphor and just purchased Pacifica. I like them both. I want to thank you for teaching me about sunscreen and moisturizers. I always believed the more expensive the better the product but you have helped me and my pocketbook😊
My absolute fave SPF lip blam is the Jack black moisture therapy lip balm SPF 25! Specifically the mint flavour! It's magical! I used it while I was on accutane, and I never had to deal with dry cracked lips.
