Thanks for viewing this RU-vid fly fishing tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfeather.com
In this video, I share the "BEST" Squirmy Wormy yet! ;-) This version adds Orthodontic Elastics, giving you the ability to quickly insert new Squrimy material once those fish have torn apart your old one. The video ask for your opinion of this technique, and be sure to give insight behind your answer. As always, this is a pattern that catches many species of fish, and we discuss situations and setup for fishing the infamous Squirmy Wormy.
If you have any thoughts or questions based on this video, please leave them down below in the "Comments" section or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com
Fly fishing for beginners can be difficult at first, thus be sure to stick with it and ask others for advice. I was coming off a local lake in my kayak and a young lady had her 7 year old fishing bluegill off the dock. I started to chat with them and the boy complained about losing all his worms just feeding the fish. I asked if I could look at his setup and found he was fishing with a #8 hook and the gills were stripping the worm right off. I asked mom if I could tie on a fly that would catch fish and she agreed. I took out a light brown squirming worm on a 14 barbless and he immediately started getting hookups and catching fish. He was so excited and mom was delighted not to have to cut worms and bait the hook. The fish weren't big but he didn't care at all. It made his day and made me smile. There's definitely a place for this fly and this is a great way to tie it. I can now put all the leftover brace binders from the kids braces to work. Glad I didn't toss them. Thanks for the super idea!

Just found your channel. What a great video. I've been tying for 30+ years and I love learning to this day! I have had issues with squirmmies self destructing in my fly box without ever being fished. Didn't think I was being too rough with the thread but apparently I was. This should fix that problem. I'm in upstate NY, I use these on steelhead and they work great. Great new way to extend the life of a wormy hook. I’ll tie some up in 4 colors and keep them in a fly box dedicated to Y2K’s, glow bugs, egg patterns and squirmy wormy. Simple patterns are a great way to catch acrobatic rainbows, especially in stained or murky water.

I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Fly Fishing but I found this video entertaining. I have been an avid Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Fisherman for many years and know of a few fish catching lures that many Bass Fisherman wouldn't be caught dead with them tied to the end of their line with but I'm one who will throw any Bait that the Bass will eat. When the Wacky Worm became popular, I swore I'd never throw one but I now have hooks and weights specifically designed for rigging Wacky Worms. It's one of those "If I throw it, they'll eat it" kinda things. 👍
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 3 года назад
Thanks for the comments, Warren, and I appreciate your perspective on the topic. It's funny you mention this because, in my mind, I've never considered this relating to other areas of fishing. Fly fishing takes up about 95% of my fishing, so when I'm using another system, I have favorite lures...but forgot about those KILLER ones! My connection is a spoon that was effective for walleye when trolling Lake Erie, it seemed to out fish our others 5-to-1, or so we thought! ;-) Thanks again and I appreciate you taking a moment to share. @@TimCammisa I used to do quite a bit of Trout Fishing when I was a much younger man. Actually beginning when I was about 14. A few weeks before my Dad would take me, i had him take me to a local Fly Shop (Hargrove's) in St. Louis. I'd have Tom tie me six or eight Black Rabbit Fur Jigs on 1/16 & 1/8oz heads. I threw them on Ultra Light Spinning Tackle with 4lb mono. Tom would complain about having to tie me these silly "JIGS" instead of "FLIES" like a real Trout Fisherman should be using.... His Rabbit Fur Jigs always caught the biggest fish of the trip and it pissed him off to no end... Here Son, let me show you this new Scott Fly Rod... Or here... This is brand new from Winston... TOM... THESE RODS ARE $450.00...!!! 😳 I know that.... This is what REAL TROUT FISHERMAN USE...!!!

Ha ha, now that's funny, Warren...though I'm sure you know that the BEST rod that EVERY fly fisher uses costs much more than that. I think this will solve my main problem with squirmies...falling apart in the box! I tied up a few and made 2 modifications based on my tying style: 1) I prefer to tie in the elastic closest to the bead first, then use the hook on the tip of my whip finisher to stretch the elastic toward the hook bend for the "tail" loop section. This method makes it easier to manipulate the elastic for my tying style. 2) I end with a whip finish between the front elastic loop and the bead, then a second whip finish in the middle of the elastic tie in point, so the 2nd whip finish gets hit with resin by default, and I don't have to worry about gluing the front loop to the bead. Cheers Tim.

Yeah this fly stuff is like Alice's Restaurant - where "you can get anything you want" - fishing wise that is ;o) Tim, nice honest tutorial. Good deal on the squirmy holder. Check out Craig Riendeau's Hairy Fodder, he uses those eye glass retainers (the kind slipped down the bow to the hinge, it gives a tighter fit) to swap out dumbbell eyes. He also tied the Wee Willie Wiggler, has a tail from a puffer ball tentacle, hackle collar, tied on a jig hook. I think maybe it was a platform for variations like the Squirminator, but that's a guess. I like flies that are crossovers from conventional fishing and Riendeau has a lot of them. I have no problem attaching soft and chewy and wiggly plastics to a fly hook, they work. Thanks Tim, have a safe Labor Day with the family!

Hi Andrew, and thanks for the comment. I know many fly fishers that do use jig heads, as it saves a step. In many cases, they tend to come in larger sizes, and I'm unsure if tungsten is an option? Regarding rigging, the Squirmy material is a smaller diameter, thus would tear easier with that configuration. I'm curious: Have you tried that setup before? Thanks again. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

This fly is unbelievable. Ive caught bigger fish with this fly. Who cares I like to catch trout with any fly that works. I saw an English tier that used lace and made two loops one at each end that works very well. You can also get it in color that match the worms and thread. Tight lines.

Thanks for the comments, Stan, and glad it works for you, too! Any colors that have caught more fish than others? Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Did you really say that because competitive fly fishing doesn’t allow the work material, that’s why you don’t see patterns using it posted as much. Just how many fly fishers do you think actually compete? The 2nd to last post says it all; its a terrible pattern and will likely kill any trout that swallows the worm.
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 2 года назад
Hi Fly Tyer, yes, I did say that and will stick to it. Social media has been driving the patterns that a lot of anglers fish today, and many of those fishers hold the competitive anglers at the top of the hill. The top competitive anglers are there 100% because of their ability to fish varying techniques, not just the flies...but you and I both know that most fly tiers want to know what that one "killer" fly is. This fly "was" that pattern for awhile, but dropped off of the social media scene for the reasons I explained. Also, I have been fishing this pattern for years and have never had a fish swallow one, and that includes both moving and stillwater situations. Thanks for the comments and I look forward to hearing more thoughts on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Mine gets gummed up in the winter because I tie downstairs. Have you tried microwaving it for 8 seconds? Does the trick for me.

I feel like squirmy wormy is not really fly tying any way so this technique sits fine with me , and I'm primarily a float fisherman and I know how well a pink worm works so I do love these "flys " alot . Thanks for the video and tips
