This is very cool content. I had always done "dry fly" fishing with an altered technique because I do not have a fly rod. What I did is use a wine cork about 3 feet from the dry fly just to give it enough weight to cast, but still float. I came across your Euro Nymphing videos. I thought they were very interesting and how similar they are to the technique of drifting a bead for steelhead with a standard long rod that is not a fly rod. I am looking forward to trying some of the nymphing techniques you show. Thanks for sharing your great information.

Yeah... I played with several ways of tying them over the years and ended up on this method... It pulled together a few things I liked from other methods. One thing i do now that I didn't do as much then is I dub the thread wherever it comes in contact with the squirmy material... this keeps it from cutting the material and they last much longer this way.

Had an experience on a pretty good reservoir up here in Central Oregon connected to this fly. Late season and fishing in an area that has been pretty good all year and after an hour and a half with me not landing a fish and the OTher guy landing 10 or 11...... He finally, (finally, I didn't ask but was close to doing so) shared what he was using and it was your pattern just about to the T. Holy cow did that work. I will be using your methods and tying some up pronto. Thanks again Loren

I liked your version of the squirmy, the way you attach it to the hook. As a new learner in tying these, I made the mistake of using a tightened approach with the thread, which ended up cutting all my squirmy patterns. Ugh. I am now using your approach! Thank you!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 месяца назад
One thing I do now that I did not put in this video is I don't let the bare thread touch the squirmy material. I dub the thread before I have it contact the squirmy material. It is keeps it from cutting the squirmy material. I tie a ton of these and never have them come undone unless a fish thrashes one around for a while! 😊

I live out west and have used the squirmy worm in some of the rivers out here. Pattern is pretty much the same other than I wrap squirmy worm body material around the hook body for the middle of the fly. It has a tendency to come undone, so I like your pattern using dubbing and will give it a try.

Yup... that'll work too. I tend not to use bobbin threaders for anything because they are metal and can damage your bobbins over time (especially if you have ceramic coating inside). So I just got used to using the flossers that will never damage your bobbins.

This is the best tutorial on this fly, thank you so much for adding this to your list of awesome videos. I didn’t have a dental threader so I used the snipped off piece from the tie in, I just treaded through the bead and made a loop, worked just as good, this is a very quick tie. Have you been to the brick and mortar of the Fly Shack in Gloversville ? It’s a nice store but too bad it’s only opened from Thursday-Saturday. Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s great

A bobbin threader also works well to pull the worm through- request for fly tying videos: how about your top 5 spring time flies? I’m in the Northeast so perhaps something region specific - get a jump start on the up coming season!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
The flies I use vary depending on the type of fishing. Nymphs are pretty standard and work all year. Dry flies can be very specific to the region and water! I don't fish dry flies much anymore but man there is just something special about watching a trout eat your dry fly!!!!

I’ve tried to tie squirmies in the past and wasn’t able to find a method that worked for me without cutting the material. This pattern worked MUCH better for me with one exception: I wasn’t able to get the material through the bead the way you showed. I ended up threading the material through the bead before putting the bead on the hook. It was a bit troublesome trying to get the wire on with the squirmy material somewhat in the way, but it worked. Great fly!!😢
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany Год назад
It can definitely be tricky to get the squirmy material through the bead! Sometimes it goes easily and sometimes it refuses to cooperate. The big key to not cutting the squirmy material is not letting the thread directly contact the worm on the ends where it is secured. I have changed my process a bit... I now use dubbing on the thread on the front and back where it locks the material down. I have not had any fall apart that way yet. Also, be sure not to use any adhesives...it'll destroy the material.

Awesome video! I would like to see you attempt a hellgramite fly.

Would be interested in seeing some tips on using jig streamers for trout with your euro rod setup and maybe some of your favorite patterns.

Yes! I just bought some hooks for jig streamers! Will be doing some soon! I also have an advanced video in the Euro series for fly selection and my favorite fly patterns. Trying to get more fly tying videos out before I do that one though.

Great video, I understand the love-hate some people have with this fly. Just not natural enough for some purist but hey if it works I am game.

This is such an effective pattern. Just two days ago I used a hand tied one to bag 2 big ones. A 20" brown and then a 22" whitefish that turned out to be longer than the state record (should've kept it and turned it in, but let it go and found out that night about what the record was)

I live in NE Ohio, Steelhead country. I remember as a kid my old man and his buddy were looking for fishable water. We ended up where a smaller trib met the main branch, thus creating an obvious mudline where the slightly clearer creek met the muddier river. I remember my dad asking two guys who were killing them what they were using. It was a san Juan worm. I'd never heard of them. I can't remember if they gave us a few or if my dad's buddy had a few but we put them on and did really well. I remember getting a big male

That's awesome! It is definitely a go to fly for me for steelies and big trout!

I've used a similar pattern catching fish in CO and here in the northeast. Cant wait to see how your variation works with the crazier steelhead bites and fights! Do you ever use the white zonker for steelhead? That would be another great video.

I have not used a white zonker.. I use black wooly buggers for them sometimes.

My last fishing trip I slayed them on the sexy stonefly,today I caught 5 on the sexy stonefly and 17 on the pink squirmy. A 20 4 18in and several around 16.

YES!!! That is what it's all about! Congrats on some great catches. The pink squirmy caught me a 21" brown today on a stream that has only produced fish up to 19" for me until today.

Nice tie for sure. I’ve been fishing worms since the 80’s when they seemed to come into the arsenal. There has always been some stigma with it, but worms are in the system, trout eat them and I think they are largely accepted at this point. Don’t feel bad😅

They can be tricky for sure. Start with loose wraps first and then slowly tighten... that helps a lot. Over time you may still have some that cut through though.

Hi Ken! I wouldn't spend a lot of money on fly tying tools until you know it is something you want to do more seriously. I tied on a really basic vise for many years and still use some of my original tools! I would recommend a starter kit... something like this. amzn.to/3yt9tau I used a very similar starting point and then upgraded my vise over the years until I got the Renzetti Traveler (which I love!). Here is what that one looks like. amzn.to/3a2c6H3 Best of luck and enjoy!!!
