good eye, they did indeed reuse footage from A New Hope. in the original movie there were Blue and Red squadrons that take on the deathstar but they had problems with the greenscreen technology back then and couldnt use the Blue squadrons ships so they used them in this movie and had them sacrifice themselves by going inside the shield and dying with rogue one
@BogeyTheBear
@BogeyTheBear 7 месяцев назад
The problem with the greenscreen technology back then was that it was _bluescreen_ instead. There's a particular film stock that does not react at all to blue light, so anything shot before a blue background will show up on an otherwise-transparent negative. Then you can cut a matte over these frames and use an editing machine to compose them into the print.

@@ctakitimu Isn't that the point, though. Two old masters, one slowed by age and the other by his crippled body. Vader looks almost hesitant to fight his old master, while Kenobi carefully dances around him for his final fight. @rollomaughfling380
@rollomaughfling380 Год назад
@@cinemagoose "Two old masters, one slowed by age and the other by his crippled body." Interesting idea, but definitely retconning, wherever it originated. Time/budget/wardrobe constraints made that scene what it was. No time to hire athletic stunt double sword fighters for the pair, one 6' 6", no time/budget to build a Vader costume that would allow for "swashbuckling." It was fine as-is, though. A swordfight had never been done like this, future success of the movie was a *huge* question mark, and Lucas (wisely) trusted Dykstra/ILM to sell it. To steal from Christopher Walken's line in _Catch Me If You Can,_ "The audience couldn't keep their eyes off the light sabers." 😀
@cinemagoose
@cinemagoose Год назад
@@rollomaughfling380 yeah. I have read a couple fact books of star wars from before the Disney buyout (before Darth Vader became OP) that seem to support my argument. Over the past decade, Vader has appeared so often as an extremely powerful force user that I feel like the original scene has become outdated, now that my old explanation no longer works. SC 38 reimagined was kind of necessary to address the new canon now that Vader has been shown to easily overcome his cyborg implants. In a way, that original recon has now become retconned again, even if only unofficially

The deaths of the main cast of Rogue One came as expected for the continuity as we do not see these characters further down in the Star Wars timeline, for this film leads immediately into the events of A New Hope. @@andymiller6661 You clearly don't understand a tragedy. That's the point. None of these people had to die. But they are normal people fighting an active war. They aren't special in any way, like Luke, Leia and Han are. So when the Force cannot protect them anymore than getting them to do what needs to be done to get the plans to the Rebellion, they are left vulnerable to the active war around them.
@andymiller6661
@andymiller6661 3 месяца назад
@justinalicea1590 No, I fully understand tragedy. And I get that people die in war. But it'd be tragic if the rebels used better tactics and actually tried to live, or at least tried to perform their objectives better but died anyway. Alas, they used suicidal tactics and subpar vehicles when better vehicles and tactics were available. They don't need anyone special to do that, just someone to think things through for more than half a second.
@justinalicea1590
@justinalicea1590 3 месяца назад
@@andymiller6661 And your proof of this is what? Every rebel either was fighting to survive the moment they activated the detonators to draw out the Stormtroopers that would otherwise be in the way of reaching the actual plans or was fighting to cover someone else who was completing an important objective. Like the rebels who made themselves a target so that the pilot could reach the ship. None of the planet level combat involved kamikazes from rebel ships, they either blast their targets or were shot down themselves. Above the planet was the same.
@andymiller6661
@andymiller6661 3 месяца назад
@justinalicea1590 They're all to aware in writing and pacing that we know generally how the movie ends. But instead of dealing with the forgone conclusion that they will steal and deliver the plans no matter what by slowing down and developing the characters, they're violently propelled from action to action with no real actual or natural progression in relationships. Jyn goes from yelling at Cassian to quoting him passionately and Cassian goes from cold blooded killer to organizing a suicide squad for her because he chose not to kill the one person he was specifically ordered to kill, which was her father. And he had good reasons for not killing him, I'm sure Bor gullet was used, despite him making people go crazy, to learn the truth. Yet nothing comes of that truth gathering scene. When the X-Wings attacked Jyn's fathers position, we're told that they can't be called off because they're already committed. Nonsense. No shots were fired yet, and there's apparently instantaneous two way interstellar communications in Star Wars and with that squadron, so there's plenty of time to call them off. Even if there wasn't, there's nothing to prevent one of the X-Wings from hovering over the pad for a few seconds and sweeping the pad clear of enemies while his squad mates covered him. The end battle scenes went from "Cool visuals, I guess," to, "Seriously?" The inclusion of Red and Gold Leaders, obviously limited to what they could cull from cut angles meaning the almost the same exact lines from A New Hope was jarring. Then there's the out of place Mos Eisley jerks somehow being on Jedha, being jerks on Jedha because they have to cram some random cameo in the movie, just for them to leave Jedha immediately after being jerks and going straight to Tattoine, without freaking out over almost being killed by the Death Star. Pretty much everyone died in an explosion immediately after serving their one purpose in the movie, which was to flip a switch. And some of those switches were outside and exposed to the elements for no reason. And the antenna was out of alignment for no reason, and somehow transmitted to everyone yet just the rebel flagship, which had Leia's ship in it for some reason. And let's not forget that C-3PO and R2-D2 were in the Yavin hangar when everyone left yet on Leia's ship when it got boarded not much longer later. Also, the battle scenes was ridiculous. The rebels had the element of surprise, yet they didn't immediately start shooting everything on sight upon exiting lightspeed. There was no general plan and at most minimal coordination. Orders were given sporadically, instead of rapid fire. There was no shooting between the capital ships and minimal firing from the capital ships. There was no bombing or bombardment of the Imperial structure surrounding the shield opening. There were no squadrons of fighters firing volleys of torpedoes, just random fighters almost casually flying about and shooting at the occasional target. There were a total of 3 star destroyers in orbit around Scarif and yet not one deployed any troops to reinforce the surface. Instead, they just let the surface fend for itself and eventually Tarkin destroyed the Empire's own base, despite only some rebels being on the surface and despite the rebels already getting the plans. And fuck the rest of the data stored there, right? That's not important anymore for some reason. Vader's scene at the end was supposed to be orgasmicilly amazing, yet it's a let down and shows him to be incompetent. He dramatically took his time and turned off his life support and almost casually walked down the hall killing fools, instead of being mister badass sith and using the Force to brush everyone to the side and at least trying to Force grab the plans or using the Force to at least try stopping Leia's ship. Then he's standing in the vacuum of space like his suit is rated for that. The opening crawl in A New Hope mentioned spies, yet there weren't really spies. Just some people sneaking into a base. Sure, that could constitute spying, but barely at that. Vader mentioned that the data was beamed to her ship; sure, the satellite dish transmitted the data, but not to her ship. If they're going to have Vader eage against the machine and her ship be attached to the flagship for some reason, have Vader mow down the rebel scum and get the plans, only to have Leias ship leave and the communication officer on the flagship transmit/beam the data to her. That can be arranged since the data was transmitted to the flagship and copied to the case but not necessarily deleted from the ships computer. The one of Leia's officers copies the data to the disc and then deleted the data from the her ships computer. Or better yet, have a spy team on the surface. Then Leia's ship arrives to take on supplies for a "mercy mission" (as vaguely mentioned in A New Hope). The spies bribe a bunch of people (Leia mentioning the price they paid), and beam the data up to her ship. Vader happens to be in the system, somehow catches on to that, then gives chase, leading to the beginning of A New Hope. The exhaust port doesn't need a flaw purposefully built into it; it just needs to exist. Closing an exhaust port at the wrong time can lead to bad things happening to complex machines.
@JMotion
@JMotion Год назад
The final act of this film underwent pretty heavy rewrites and reshoots, which likely explains the weird cuts you mentioned. Originally Vader wasn't going to show up at the end the way he did, and the rebels were going to escape the tower and try to run back across the beach with the death star plans in hand. Footage of this can be seen in early trailers and featurettes promoting them film. One of the trailers even ends on this shot of Jyn facing off against a Tie Fighter on the top of the tower, which never happens in the final film. Also, it was a pretty big piece of early promo info about this film, but the entire plot of this movie is summed up in the opening two paragraphs of A New Hope's opening crawl. At the time, basically every fan of the franchise knew that was going to be the story of this film, and the vast majority of people assumed everyone would die during the mission, as these rebels effectively save the entire galaxy with their actions, but are never seen or mentioned after this movie. The one thing that caught most fans by surprise was how close to A New Hope this film exactly takes place. Most people assumed there would be some period of time in between this movie's ending, and the beginning of A New Hope. But in reality, A New Hope begins almost immediately after Rogue One ends. Watching them back to back as a double feature is almost seamless. It's a really great choice.

It's one of the better examples of story telling in Star Wars, and has been solid all the way through it's 12 episode season. If you were to do a reaction series on those, you could pair up three episodes at a time, as 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 pretty much equate to 4 connected standalone movies.

Jyn Erso is a terribly sad character. - She lives in hiding with her parents, her mum is killed (in front of her!), she is taken away by a stranger at a young age, lives with rebels, is abandoned at 16(!), becomes a Juvenile criminal, sees her dad die front of her and then is herself killed at a young age. "If it wasn't that actor, I don't think anyone would care". WRONG, But perhaps some peeps were more emotionally involved than you.. 😒 Also re. Saw Gererra - "You could have just gone". Nope, no he couldn't; for two reasons. 1. He's physically knackered; he can hardly walk. Can you see him runnng to the ship where K2 is? No, well.... Even if he wanted to, he can't physically escape. Which brings me onto - 2.Saw has spent his entire life from his teens/twenties onwards fighting (SW Clone Wars tv show onwards). Look at the toll it's taken on him physically and mentally. he doesn't trust anyone, he's in hiding etc. He's tired. H'e seen so many people die, made so many compromises etc. "They have strange cuts in this movie". Err no they don't. No one has suggested this other than you. 🙄 I cired at various points when I saw this in the cinema; primarily when Jyn gets the message from her dad and then when he tries to talk to her whilst dying. No other SW movie has ever done this. Andor is also brilliant Good reaction. Look forward to the next ones! how about "Pan's Labyrinth" and either/both Speilburg's forgotten movie "Empire of the Sun" or John Borman's'" "Hope and Glory" - the later doesnt's have a reaction on RU-vid (as far as I know)

23:09 Not necessarily. However the Snow Speeder Blasters were simply to weak so they had to fall back on the cable solution. The Laser Cannons of an X-Wing are quite a bit more powerful, but on Hoth they had to escort the Transports. Also they aren't actually fighting AT-ATs here as far as i know, but AT-ACTs, the less armored Variant with more Space for Troop Carrying.
@avsbes98
@avsbes98 Год назад
28:37 Originally, Jyn and Cassian would have found a spaceship and barely escaped at the last minute. However the test audiences commented that that felt... wrong, that they were supposed to die after finishing their mission and not miraculously survive.

The Death Star doesn't just blow up planets. It was explained in the film that Grand Moff Tarkin didn't want to destroy the entire planet of Jedha, but just wanted to use a single reactor ignition to just blow up the city.

G'day it's Steven from Down Under again A brilliant film that ties up a few loose ends and clarifies long asked questions, and certainly honours the Skywalker saga, the end scene with Darth Vader is cool and goosebump inducing, though I must admit James Earl Jones' iconic powerful Darth Vader voice did sound a little on the weak side to me considering his advanced years but thoroughly enjoyable none the less. Love your honest reactions and keep up the great work young man.

Rogue One is more of a war movie than a Star wars film, it shows the major sacrifice it took to just get ahold of the weakness of the deathstar which the whole plot of A New Hope revolved around. It's my favourite SWs movie for sure, I think it's better than all the other ones. Plus, that Vader scene at the end was the most epic thing. I watched it in the cinema and my god, I had chills everytime I thought of it.

Of all the Star Wars films that Disney made, Rogue One was the best they produced and Darth Vader fighting in the end, was perfect. They showed respect to Vader in this film, show him to be someone that you could not easily defeat even in large groups. To me, Vader a fallen and later redeem hero, was and still in my eyes an ultimate villain.

Yeah, Seb, unfortunately the movie didn't hit you as hard is because you've forgotten alot of what you've already seen. There are tons of call backs (call forwards?) to A New Hope that you didn't get. That's too bad. Because this movie was one of the best Star Wars stories told since the original trilogy.

Look up the actor that plays K2SO, Alan Tudyk. he's in an absurd amount of movies - don't often see him as himself.. he does a lot of voice work, but it's worth checking him out just to marvel at the range that he has. half the time you have no idea it's him, even after you know it's him. his voice range is just nuts, but he's actually an awesome actor too when you DO actually see him. I went into this one with the expectation that most, if not all of them, were going to die since I knew it led right into A New Hope. So I went in with fairly low expectations. but this is still one of my favorite SW movies for sure.

Yes, Tarkin's face is CGI. Peter Cushing died in 1994. And when you see CGI Leia, you can tell that they put most of their work into Tarkin's face. The work on her face is nowhere near as good.

I'm not the biggest Star Wars nerd out there, so I don't know if there's any actual lore that would explain it, but I think "the Hoth thing" was only necessary against the walkers at Hoth because the snowspeeders flown by the rebellion weren't meant to be dedicated attack craft and probably had smaller weaponry compared to the X-wing "fighter". The fact that the speeders were even equipped with tow cables at all suggests to me that they were really more of a lightly armed utility vehicle.

At about the 12 minute mark, you are wondering why the Death Star shot is slowly destroying the planet; you missed the detail that it only shot at like 10 percent power as the Empire only wished to destroy the city. THAT is why they could get away and why the horizon was "slowly" being destroyed.

My favorite fact about this movie is that the writer wanted to kill all the characters in the end, but thought Disney wouldn’t let him get away with it so the first draft had Jyn and Cassian find a ship and escape. Disney read it and came back with “We love it, but shouldn’t Jyn and Cassian die in the end?” And he just goes “You got it boss!”

Dude you can't start lambasting the movie's "underwhelming" ending DURING the movie like its already over. You deflate the whole experience. It's like you had decided already that the movie was over and that ending was "dissapointing" mainly having to do with you forgetting that the Death Star isnt blown up until "Star Wars"...which isnt the film's fault for assuming you'd know that. You get caught up with your sort of gut reaction to things and then interrogate the movie for not providing answers it simply hasnt provided yet. I understand what you do and that you need to provide commentary and thats the point of it. But you have a habit of steamrolling the storytelling with your rants and so the movie isn't being faurly judged by you. And that makes for a seriously frustrating viewing. My two cents. I actually enjoy your reactions. I just think you don't as much attention when you're speculating out loud and you lose context or information.
