Best STIHL Weed Eater Head- Line Trimmer Vs Polycut Vs Metal Blades - It's a Weed Wacker Showdown!

What's the very best weed wacker head? Everyone has an opinion on what the very best method is to cut tall grass, weeds, and brush. I'm going to compare a couple string heads to a plastic blade and a few metal blades and VERY UN-SCIENTIFICALLY decide the BEST String trimmer head.
Today, I'm using a Stihl KMA 131 and a FS 131 with an AutoCut head, a Durocut Head, a FixCut head, a Grass Blade, as Brush Knife and a Circular Saw Blade. All are made by Stihl to be compatible with their line trimmers.
I'll also be using some Stihl Premium line and some Oregon Magnum Gator Line. Heck yeah, buddy!

Echo Speed Feed 400 is the best trimmer head by far. I've tried them all on my 30 year old trimmer, & I will NEVER own a trimmer without a Speed Feed 400 head. Easy to load line, & it works awesome! I would toss the Stihl head & put the Echo on it.

I hafta agree with you Micah. I've used Stihl products for 40 years. But... last Fall one of my old trusty weedeaters bit the dust after 20 plus years of abuse. I always prefer the bike handle bars the best. Went to buy a new weedeater at my local hardware and was shocked at the $. So I settled for the biggest Echo weedeater they had. It was $160 bucks less. So far I'm very satisfied. Don't know if it'll serve me the next 20 years like the old Stihl but in 20 years I'll be 81 and probably won't be able to even start it let alone use it. You did a good demo on the different heads.

I like how light the Echo line trimmers are for the amount of power they have. I'm pretty committed to Stihl, but we've got an older Echo in the shed. It's a little beast!

I have a Stihl FS85 that is 22 years old. I opened the gearbox last season for the first time ever and the gears and shaft end looked like new. Probably key to the Echo is to keep an eye on things that wear or need lube.

Very informational! Thank you. I have a regular Stihl trimmer. One of the lower end models, but still very high quality. Don’t want to end up using blades, but I do need to cut up the thicker grass….

Best review I've seen and I didn't have to wait for 2 acres of clearing for the results 🙂. I fully agree with your assessment as well. The wood cutting blade is absolutely amazing BUT you will immediately damage teeth if you hit rock, brick, old wire fence, metal pipe, etc. You can file it sharp like a chain saw blade as it has a similar "swept" tooth style. I'm using the loose line head right now with 3mm line and it lasts quite a while in some areas. But again, I have to agree that the bump head is best for around the house work. Better edging, better mulching or shredding, etc. Great except when you run out of line 😞

Great review! I am just about to order a new head for my trimmer and I wanted to see if there was a reason to change from my bump style head. For my use it looks like the bump head is still the way to go. Thanks for helping me not to make a mistake with my order!!

Thanks for letting me know that plastic blades are as useless as I thought they would be.... I use a speed feed head for line trimming super fast to reload line and cheap Chinese metal blades off ebay for brush cutting here in Australia..

I have the duro cut head on my Stihl trimmer (FS 240) and I like it but after the line begins to wear down I'm throwing away about half my pre-cut lines which I think is wasteful. great video

Yeah, I like the bump head too, especially with some good line. I have cut a million miles of trail with the fs90 (D handle model) with a saw blade and never had a problem.

I tried a chisel tooth blade for brush and it was terrible because it would not hold an edge. I switched to a Renegade carbide 80t blade and it worked fantastic.

I never use a grass blade, they are crap. I use the Husqvarna 535LK pro combi, and do use a saw blade on it, it's also great with a mulching blade. I bought extra trimmer attachments and fitted different heads, so switching tools takes seconds. For most jobs though, as you said, line is the best!

Have you ever tried a Renegade blade? They are carbide, made for different grass, brush and literally trees. I have 3 different blades and have cut 3" trees with one of them while also cutting heavy weeds, vines, grass at the same time, same blade. Just don't hit a piece of steel hiding in the weeds as with any carbide tip blade it''l dull the leading cutter but will still be usable to an extent. I love them for that type of trimming. No good on fences, next to buildings, cement.

Thank you very much. I wish I had watched this before I went out and bought all the various options. Once I started soaking the line in water before loading it in the bump head, all my issues went away. The line really is best around the house. 👍🏼

Someone needs to come out with a bump head that will run the larger trimmer lines like .155 and .170. I personally hate those fixed heads that you have to constantly replace the line on, and I’m not a fan of blades unless you have to actually cut some saplings. I personally run .130 in a speed feed 450 head but it’s just too small for the thicker stuff. I’ve tried the fixed head with the .155 and it’s just way to slow to keep replacing the line every 5 minutes or less.

On the polycut blades you can run a length of plastic line at the same time. I run it long and then when it gets short replace the line. It makes the blades lactic longer. Also soak the plastic line in water they will not be as brittle and don’t snap off. The 4 blade metal cutter works well, kicks up less rocks and doesn’t break windows. After all the years I run string line and I’ve learned too spool it correctly, by not over tightening or over stuffing the spool. That causes the line to jam.

The most common reason is that the lock nuts they use now take a hurculean amount of force to tighten down. I've seen lots of them that were just a little loose. Other than that, could be something in the blade attachment hardware that's out of place

Why didn't you put some trimmer line in the polycut 20-2 head with the plastic blades? That would help your cutting than just using the plastic blades because the cut is cleaner. Plus you should put your blades in water, Stihl recommends it, and they will last longer.

Good question. Adding line increases drag and slows down the head, which reduces efficiency in heavier material. I've also noticed that the line gets tangled with the blades in heavy material. Plus, the line just breaks when hitting hard stuff or woody material, so there's not much benefir there. These particular plastic blades were fresh, so they had a ton of give to them, but we definitely soak our plastic blades and line to prevent them from getting brittle.

i have a makita er2600l oetrol strimmer. when it works its ace. but im always going to close to concrete when edging. as a result i smoothen off the line . one alternative way to edging is using an angle grinder with a slit disc on. this ensures the grass roots are cut ensuring the grass has less capability to grow over the concrete. only thing is, it can get covered in soil. just be sure theres no garden features along that edge. such as something powered by an electric cable lol

@@HomesteadBandwagon I probably just bought an MT125 from one of your customers. I was wanting to see if there is a thumb for the 1107 backhoe? Also, is there a way to eventually put a hydraulic thumb on it? ?#2= is there a single or double, hydraulic remotes I can add on to the rear of the tractor? ?#3= is there a 3rd remote I can add on to the front for a grapple?

There IS a factory thumb, but it's a weld-on unit. Little bit of a pain. Hydraulics could be added to it if you've got deep pockets. Ls offers a single set of remotes for the back. If ya want more, you'd need to go aftermarket. They make factory diverter kits for the MT1, so I'd suggest going with an aftermarket 3rd function kit. Feel free to give me a buzz at the shop and I can get you some ideas on pricing!

I need something that would work the best around rocks and a there's a LOT of them lol but I've been using Weed Warrior Pulverizer line on a head that takes individual cut pieces because a regular head will get busted up. Any ideas with something that works good around rocks?

You can can pretty much use any old type of sting-trimmer line, round, square? I kind of like the fancier Stihl branded, I believe its Hexagonal (dont quote me on that name though!!!...), but anyways.. I prefer to use it around hard-scapes, anymore heavy-duty than that stuff, and you can really tear some stuff up that you probably didn't exactly want to have torn up necessarily!!🤣😂 But the key to using ANY different kind of string-trimmer head/line around LOTS OF ROCKS. Bemimmmwhen you get close toť youVAMa rock(y) area to trim, you just need to SIMPLY, LET OFF OF THE DAMN THROTTLE A BIT!!! See a rock? Slow it down to just a "DULL-ROAR" and once you get more practice at this you will get familiar with what speed is too fast and will reck your line, or what speed is too slow and it wont cut anything, but youll get the hang of it and you wont detroy anything you didn't want to destroy!!

@@tgabe6163 agree with you 100% but one place I weed eat there's probably just as many rocks as blades of grass lmao nah but there's a LOT of rocks of all shapes and sizes from a pebble to boulders bigger than a truck. I believe what I'm using is probably the best from trial and error.

Stihl quality has gone to crap. I work for a property maintenance company and have some old Stihl trimmers that are built rock solid. We just bought some new trimmers and I can't believe how cheap they feel. The plastic is thin and while using it, everything feels shakey and loose because it is made of such cheap materials. Add to that, the bump heads are expensive and last us only a few months before they are ground down to nothing, again, cheap, thin placstic.
