Currently using Burn Proof Gear, they hold up great as long as you put them on correctly and cinch them down so they don't fly off. Got to try a Liberty Defense at some point but almost $400 for a cover to match one of my suppressors is a lot.
Been running one too but added a flame resistant sleeve on the inside to keep temps down... works very well... keeps suppressor hotter longer but brings the temp down to be able to handle it bare handed
Great video bro. For precision rifles this video is amazing. Too many people buy them for semi-auto's to look cool but don't realize they are trapping heat, making it louder and they wear out on semi applications. For precision shooting this is the best suppressor cover wrap up you'll get (no pun intended.)
In general, I think suppressors are kind of gimmicky especially on semi-automatics. Even the low back pressure cans are going to start gassing you out if you needed to run the gun hard for whatever reason. There is also the fact that you are introducing more carbon into the action which increases the risk of failure. Finally, the very real risk of getting serious burns is very real and often underplayed even with a heat cover. This isn't to say that I'm against suppressors, having one on a night stand gun isn't a bad idea considering intruders aren't going to wait for you to get your ear pro on but I think that the cons are often overlooked or omitted. A lot of RU-vidrs just want to sell you stuff at the end of the day.
I run a TAB Gear SASR on my SF MINI 2 556 and have been very happy with its performance. Not made for hard use, but rated up to 1800°. Made to order, at a good price point. Those Liberty’s Defense look incredible..
On the Mechanic's cover, you can run the cinch strap over your VFG (on an AR) as a backup system to keep the cover from coming off during a course of fire.
You gotta be kidding me this is very odd timing I was looking for a cover today for a new suppressor that I just bought and now here you are putting out a video wow sometimes I wonder about things anyway thanks for the video Ray
Another great video Ray. Best fail for me was a Barrett QD can on my 107a1 with the factory mirage cover. It slid down over the brake gills on the can and got roasted. 😂
I use to work for manta defense as their mil sales guy (for a short time). If you cut out the “manta defense” logos on the covers it can be used for higher rates of FA. The reason it’s limited to 100 rnds is because of reversion. The can cover tries to revert back to a liquid state when there isn’t enough air flowing through the cover. Cutting out the logos creates a higher air flow and smothers the option for a fire to start.
My first purchase of a cover was from Liberty’s Defense because of a comment Ray made in a prior post 4-5 months ago. The custom cover from Liberty’s Defense is for a 10.5” CGS Hekate (.338 LM) and is everything Ray says it is. I highly recommend this product!
Love my covers by Elite Iron. All my toys in New Zealand (the ones we are still allowed to have) have cans(easily available). Great video, thanks for showing other options.
Burn Proof Gear Hank has been the best for me other than their supressor cover. After a handfull of mags, trying to take off suppressor isn't happening haha cover just spins, no matter how tight I have it.
Great video and discussion…. I’ve been shooting suppressors for over 10yrs and have spent hundreds of dollars on different brand covers. I’ve had the best luck with Armageddon Gear & Cole-Tac but I don’t shoot “rapid fire” very often. I just ordered a Weka to try…. 👍🏻👍🏻
Man. I’ve been keeping an eye here and there the past few months on a good cover…(been on the fence about a libertys defense because man 350?!) but I’m happy a recent video has been posted. This was very insightful! Thank you!
Man. I’ve been keeping an eye here and there for the past few months on a good cover…(been on the fence about a libertys defense because man 350?!) and I’ve seen good and bad about other companies…so I’ve been kind of stuck. But I’m happy a recent video has been posted. This is very insightful! Thank you!
I've used a Burn Proof Gear cover with liner for over 4 years on an 11.5 AR and it has not only held up extremely well during classes, 2gun and CQB matches as well as general practice, it hasn't moved either. It's still on the can and it just plain works. Almost half the cost of the Liberty covers - and no metal. Can has been carbon welded onto the AR for years and I have zero issues with it. You missed out reviewing them. Grab a couple and check them out.
I have the 5 dollar mechanix one and it works great, just cut off the tab inside. I haven't done more than 100 rounds at a time ,but works great for the money
LOL, hey Ray, in Illinois we can't legally own a can of any kind. If that ever changes (highly unlikely) I'll come back and watch this one. I want to move outta state, but the wife ain't having it. All the kids and grands are here. I don't blame her, I'd miss them.Besides, I'm already partially deaf from playing guitar too loud for 50 years. Have a good weekend
T and K outdoors have the best suppressor covers on the market give them a look please before any others. Local American made covers that have never budged or burnt out on any of my AR’s with 1,000’s of rounds.
Fantastic factual review as always! I run a 6.5" Burn Proof Gear on my MPX-K (9mm) and absolutely love the looks and fitment. They are a small new company based in Miami. I have nothing negative to say about their product, it is on the pricey end like the Liberty Defense you mentioned. Have a wonderful weekend!
Great info Ray…. I’ve got a new six BR coming from Gary at Paramount tactical as well as a thunder beast ultra seven so I will pick one of these up for that new rig.
I picked up the Mechanix Wear on Amazon for $14.99 ($22 now). I do not mag dump (past 1 mag). Awesome. About the silicone, is it spelled Weka? Having trouble finding it.
I'm a little surprised how quickly you went past the Cole-Tac covers, and made no mention of their HTP covers that have an internal heat sleeve, and an external thermal cover with multiple options to hold it in place (Velcro, Stricta Cord, etc.). I've found this "combination" cover works best in virtually every situation. I have 7 cans, and the proper Cole-Tac HTP for each of them, and I'm super happy with the fit and heat protection. I also believe a "barrel cooler" is really important to have, as it will decrease the length of time it takes to cool down a suppressor by a LOT. Final piece of advice is to always carry pair of welder's gloves and a small welding blanket to handle hot cans and covers whenever you need to remove them or switch them over to a different barrel.
Good advice for sure and I appreciate the comment. I absolutely cannot keep up with all of the different companies making great covers. I do like the Cole Tac brand and use their bags extensively. 👍🏼
What do you think of burn proof gear? Also, with Surefire QD, the cover wraps over the QD, but to avoid carbon lock it’s advised to take it off while still warm/hot, so we’d have to undo the cover to get to the QD?
12:00 - don't cut it off . . . it tears out easily by design. I have about 20 of them. They work very well.
I understand cinching a cover tightly at the rear of a direct thread suppressor to mitigate walk-off, but what can you do with a Quick-Detach suppressor?
What would you recommend, if any, for a 9mm S&W FPC with Dead Air Wolfman intended for home defense? Will likely never undergo high speed multiple mag dumps.
I have 3 TAB Gear covers and am pleased with them. I don't do mag dumps, so they don't get superheated, but they keep the mirage down. Any experience with them compared to the ones presented in this video?
Thank you very much, this video was extremely helpful. I'm getting into suppressors for the first time and I probably would have burned myself severely if you hadn't provide a disinformation. Thanks again
You missed a crucial one with Burn Proof Gear. There is nothing better for the price point and the quality and durability. It’s the best for semi-auto or select fire as well as bolt guns. All around, it’s the best suppressor cover with the best options available.
Why do none of these videos seem to mention the Cole Tac corset cover? Even articles online only mention the HTP from them with high regards, despite the HTP being explicitly mentioned as not for rapid fire while the corset cover has the same temperature rating as the Liberty's Defense at a fraction of the cost.
I noticed youre wearing a Eurosport Asheville hat. I am originally born and raised in Asheville. Is there a gun shop in WNC you recommend? Im not aware of a good gun store in that area.
👍🏼 I really don’t go to many gun stores but it’s usually Carolina Guns and gear for any small items. They are on Sweeten Creek. You also have On Target and the Sportsman’s warehouse. That’s really about it around here.
Ray, what are your thoughts on using a wrap for titanium suppressors for long range? Not competition shooting, but just a long range class? Do you think a cover will damage a Ti can in 10-15 round strings? Thanks!
I would absolutely run a cover for that purpose. Just get something like the low temp Armageddon gear one. My understanding is that if that starts smoking at all you should let the can cool down. Supposedly designed that way for that reason. 👍🏼
Got some amazing dei titanium exhaust wrap and put it on my can and it looks beautiful and handles all the heat. On a performance series 16” Hanson 223/556 👍🏼. Great video
I have Cole-Tac covers on my suppressors (2 titanium, one huge aluminium) which work great, but I'm worried that using them actually prolongs the heat in the suppressor for such a long time it could damage it?
No burn proof gear? I shot mine off a sandman s. Took it on and off 3 different guns and guess it came lose. Shot had cover. Just shredded if. Sucks at 160$
I didn’t know Mechanix made then, I’ll take a look. I think some paracord or kevlar cord will help keep it on. I have Cole-tac but I put it on a shorter than designed for suppressor and it keeps getting shot off. There are those that have been burned, and those that will get burn. Wrap your pickle 😂
I shut it down. There was no way for me to keep it going with all of the shipping that was happening. That and the fact that I was going to need to get a building for inventory and shipping. Not something I want to do at this point in my life. I appreciate the comment.
