One of the last true suv, built on a truck chasis body on frame. No turbos, no gdi, no cvt transmission, yes it can be a 🦖 but is 100% proven, 13 years with the same engine and transmission. Why change it since they are bullet proof. If someone is worried about MPG they probably don’t even have the money to buy it so it’s ok. Best of all one of the last Toyota still made in Japan 🇯🇵 quality unmatched.

I've got a bit over 5k miles on my 2023 4Runner Offroad. I intentionally got it before the did the redesign so I could have the tech that's proven to be reliable and capable since 2010 on this version. I installed the Magnuson supercharger, Eibach Pro-Truck Series 2R suspension with Dobinsons UCA's. Also added Victory Blitz aluminum front bumper with Warn winch. SRS wheels with Falken AT3 tires in the 285 size. It's very capable off road and real easy to live with every day.

Nice video. I have a 2021 TRD Off-Road and my best upgrade was a vinyl hood stamp in matte black. It took out the insane glare from the sun and made a huge difference, easy to install and well under $100. I was constantly blinded until I got that on. I will definitely take your wife's idea and get some bear spray in both our cars in San Diego, gotta prepare for the crazy ones out here.

4runners are amazing. Ride great on the road. Surprisingly capable in a wide variety of offroad scenarios and can take 7 passengers somewhat comfortably for a long trip. My main gripe is that motor. I realize it runs forever but it gets horrible MPG and just has zero power... I drove this thing around in Hawaii and no joke my Gen 2 Prius climbed the Saddle Road going across the Big Island better than a 4Runner.

If you think the 4 runner is weak feeling you should drive the current tacoma! The tacoma is way worse. The 4 runner makes its power low in the rpm range. The tacoma has to wind out to 3800 rpm and then the you feel theblittle power it has kick in. It's almost like the power band on a 2 stroke dirt bike

That 'button' near the start button was the party mode button on the early 5th gens. You could send more volume to your rear tail gate so that you could listen to your music with the back door open. For '23, I think it's for the heated steering wheel in some markets.

@samv6811 yep if you have the premium package. I do not. Can't get cloth seats in a premium package and I don't like leather. So had to give up a few of those features

I traded my 2016 SR5 Premium for a 2023 TRD ORP in October 2023. Dealer had it in stock $54,732 which included many options I didn't expect but I bought it anyway. KDSS is a big plus IMO. Old school here. It reminds me of the two IH Scouts I owned way back. Thanks for the review.

@pamfin65 toyotas traction control in the 4 runner is outstanding and in the snow thos truck is solid, planted and holds traction incredibly well. We bought ours just before moving from Michigan to Georgia. So used it in 2 snow storms before we left. You are gonna love it.

That switch location is for the heated steering wheel if you had got the premium version. Also, the trailer wiring connector is placed like it is so the 4Runner can make use of all of it's departure angle off road without ripping it off.

Also have the auto headlight and auto digital climate control. Lack of features are the reason i traded my 2018 for 2023. Now am loving it. Cheers!

Just bought one of these. My Kia Borrego served us well for 15 years and we wanted to keep it longer. If we had a ranch we would. But it had a couple of issues that wouldn't pass NYS inspection without importing parts from Korea. There were legal issues with lights and exhaust. The car still ran 100% perfect. So, we got the best possible replacement car out there, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. While I agree that the 4Runner runs better than the Borrego, the sightlines were better in the Borrego. Anyway, the Borrego years are over. We're a 4Runner family now. I'm sure that 4Runner is also better off road. Though Borrego was a little zippier on the highway.

FYI, you do not have to hold the button to lock and unlock if you just tap it and walk away it will beep as you’re walking away and lock. Also nice little Easter egg I found when you hold the cruise control button in for a little length of time, the cruise control icon changes, and it will turn off All radar detectors so I’ll be like an old-school cruise control.

I got my 2020 SR5 during covid lockdown for $3K off MSRP. It came with a regular ignition on the steering column. Not sure about the push button start....must be new? No compass on mine either. I love lowering the rear window when I bring my garbage to the dump! Very versatile and rugged vehicle. Love!

The compass is in the center screen of the gauge cluster, it’s the third option from the left most tab, scroll up or down till you get it. I keep it as my default, gives you street names and speed limits if listed in navigation

The only real downside with the 4Runner is the gas mileage but then again most people know this when buying one.

But mist body on frame suvs are not much different gas mileage wise. Unibody will get better gas. But not many body on frame vehicles with this level of ground clearance will do much better. It's designed to be an adventure vehicle and it's one of the most capable off road suvs made. That comes at a price with gas for the simplicity and durability of a 5 speed trans.

One note about the touch to lock feature is that you don’t actually have to hold your finger on the sensor. Try touching it and removing your finger and you will see that it still works. It just takes about a second for the car to react but you don’t need to hold it there.

In mine I have to hold it until it locks. On my tacoma I could touch and walk alway. On the 4 runner I have to hold.

I have the 2022 ORP and lock delay is noticeable and slightly annoying every time I lock it. Nevertheless, that’s a first-world problem for sure!

@pbr653 yep same here. I don't mind the delay but it's noticeable. Prefer the simple push button version my my gladiator rubicon. Close the door bush the button on the handle and all locked instantly. It's fast and simple. More electronic and computer controlled stuff gets the more finicky it gets. But atleast toyota gives us the feature!

Great video!! I just grabbed my first SR5 base 2 months ago after driving full size gm and ford trucks all my life. I miss the ride and some of the features like auto lights but the 4R is growing on me. It is fun to drive and i know from doing my research it is going to be great in the snow here in upstate NY. There is such a Love and Following for this particular model that i think Toyota should keep it forever. The only change i would make is to the bug eye headlamp housings, lol, but that's just me.

There is a dimmer for the screen and gauges next to the auto high beams button, push it all the way up til it clicks and she can have her headlights on and screens at full brightness.

I love my 2020 TRD Premium Off Road Venture. It's still valued at the same price I paid for it ($42k). I had a 2015 SR5 and the 2017 XP prior to. btw - The compass is on the map display. Only with it had a six speed transmission.

I like the 4Runners. Solid vehicles. But, I chose the Highlander (2016) to haul my family around and a tundra (2001) for Offroad driving. Never had any major problems with either one.

I agree that the 4Runner is the last of the greatest trucks ever made. I think the GX 460 is on par with the 4Runner and it's all but gone. I wonder if these will keep or increase in value after Toyota stops making them?

Thanks for taking the time. I'm really having a hard time making a decision on a new truck. I really want the 4Runner. I love the look, the design and the 6cyl. I do not want a Turbo 4cyl in my truck. And, like you, I like the simplicity of everything, and the large knobs. But I'm also looking at the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X, and the Nissan Titan Pro-4X because they have a higher towing capacity. But, I really like the look of the 4Runner...lol This is driving me crazy...lol

All 3 are great. The titan is being discontinued in 24. Nissan is no longer making a full size truck. The pro4x is outstanding as is the 4 runner. The quality of the 4 runner is hard to beat being made in Japan. The 4 runner has a ton of space in it where the pro4x feels like a small mid size truck. I would drive them both and find what works best for you. Both are amazing vehicles

There are 2 places where the Compass is located, one is the touch screen while the full map is on the display and while in audio map split. The other is on the dash menu , you cycle through to get to it it's a full display choice on the menu. I did like the L.E.D on the rear view mirror on some Toyota models.

No compass anywhere on mine and no map as I dont have navigation. Mine is a non premium. I Hate leather seats so didn't want a premium. But would of been nice if I still got a dang compass. But I do have 2 clocks 3 inches apart from each other😂

I love my 2022 TRD Off Road. It's a bit jerkey and loud, but it is an amazing vehicle. YOU DO HAVE AUTO headlights. The switch is right next to the dash lighting brightness (which is next to the mirror adjustment). You can also adjust the length of time the lights stay on after switching off the truck in settings.

You don’t have to keep your finger on the handle to lock it, it does take a couple seconds, but you can just give it a quick intentional touch and then remove your hand. You’ll get used to hearing it lock as you are walking away. 🎉

My tacoma was like that. This 4 runner is not. My taco was tap and go. Everytime I try that with the 4 runner I have to turn and go back and do it again

Great rig. If you do take this off-road, remove the predator steps before the trail does and install sliders that can be used for steps, only better.

Yep. My wife loves the predator steps. If I take this over when she gets a new suv I will do a 2/1 lift on it, 33s and rock rails, and a new bumper with recessed winch.

Yep toyota has always had trouble with frame rust. But east to prevent with a simple coating of fluid film once a year for 25 bucks.

Good channel, it's a weird seeing an off-road with cloth seats, down here in Alberta Canada. It's the only option is the ORP. I mean I like it, it's easy to clean. It lasts long and you get heated seats. Overall looks better in my opinion. But anyways, keep up the good channel

I believe in the 2020 models and later they came with auto led headlights. I have a 2022 trd pro. It does have the compas in the settings. Agree tho best vehicle I've ever owned, I has a 2019 srs before this, great vehicles

I just picked up the 23 off road premium last Tuesday. The button by the start button is for the heated steering wheel. Odd place for it and not sure I would use it that much.

I have a 23 ORP as well and I am definitely going to utilize that heated steering wheel. My previous car was my introduction to heated steering wheel, seats, and heated mirrors, and let me tell you it was a luxury I never realized I “needed” lol. Only thing missing now is Remote Start for those cold winter days.

Hi! I test drove the 2023 off road premium a few days ago. I'm seriously thinking of purchasing it. The only thing I noticed is the engine is kind of noisy. Since I've never been on a 4runner before except for the test drive, I was wondering if that is normal.

The 4 runner has better on road manors and is more civilized in normal environments. The wrangler is much more fun and more capable in the woods. Both hold amazing resale value and both are very well made. Can't go wrong either way. I have this 4 runner my wife drives and I own a 23 gladiator rubicon. I personally prefer my gladiator for all the time I spend in the woods. But when we go out on the town or a long trip I'd rather take the 4 runner.

Man you got a good deal on that 4Runner. Nowadays you can’t even buy a Sr5 4wd for 42k lol. They dealers here are asking for 46k for Regular sr5 4wd and 49k for TRD off road because it’s really hard to find one here in south Texas. I paid 44k for my 4wd sr5 since I can’t find a TRD off-road when i bought it last year..

Yeah it was a challenge to find the one we wanted too. Took about 4 months of searching allocations weekly. Glad to hear you got a 4 runner! I bet the demand for the 2024s (last year of this style) will be insane and they will be hard to get. Once the word gets out on what toyota is charging for the new tacoma is gon a freak people out about the price of the next gen 4 runner.

Great question and only time will tell. But i personally do not believe there is any possible way a turbo 4 will ever be as reliable or long lasting as a naturally aspirated v6. I also believe with toyotas new designs and manufacturing processes that toyota quality will tank in the future pretty quick. I hope im wrong. But from what I see happening with the tundra and the new tacoma im pretty worried.

The blank button at 6:52 would be the steering wheel warmer. With the option it heats the two side section of the steering wheel. If you live in a warmer area they probably don't option it. It's pretty silly really. If you are warming the car on snow days anyway, the button doesn't do much that doesn't.

But nothing like the reliable, durable, go anywhere and last for ever 70 series like thry get across the pond. The new usa land cruiser will fall way short of the current 4 runner in the capability, reliability, and durability factors.

The thing by the steering wheel is where the heated steering wheel button goes. 2023 and up got them in the premium models. Also I have a 2022 sr5 4x4 premium and there is a compass on the middle screen so i would be very surprised if yours didn’t have it. Not that it matters. Crazy you got yours for so cheap. Must be in a better state. Here in oregon the sr5 premium 4x4 will run you 45000 minimum. Probably more, and the trd premium is 47000 minimum

No. Never do on any of the vehicles. Even with the 2 inch bigger jump on my gladiator. I just know that at 70mph I'm really doing 74. Below 70 the difference is on 2 or 3 mph.

You can brighten the displays when the headlights are on by clicking the dimmer wheel up. Scroll it all the way and then clicks at the top then youll have daytime brightness on tach and screen

100% correct. And thank you. When I do that my wife gets pissed vecuase it's then too bright for her at night and she can never remember how to dim them by Turing the dimmer wheel down. Her vehicle, her rules😂. But I definitely appreciate the comment and help.

I have a 2023 SR5 Premium with auto headlight so the the screen and the gauge cluster is controlled automatically. If it raining and cloudy and the headlights kick in then the screen still stays bright. If it's getting dark in the evening and the headlights kick in then it dulls out as it supposed to in the night.

I never drove a sr5 or one with kdss to compare to. But the trd off road has soft off road tuned bilstien shocks and it has some body roll to it on the road. It's a dream in the woods though

That blank spacer under your start button is where my headed steering wheel button is on my 2023 Limited. I have cup holders in my flip down arm rest in the rear seats. You skipped over the heated windshield button under your Auto high beam button. My screen auto adjust the brightness even if my headlights are on, which are automatic.

Just bought 2024 sr5 in underground color with xp package, I’m bout to Bilstein adjustable shocks to .085 setting to help with rake little bit. I have 265 nittos tires but would like 275 did urs rub at all?

With your shocks you should not run at all. I only rubbed on the front liner that was very easy to remove a screw and push it back and re screw it in. Lots of videos on how to do it online

Can't remeber where I got the new nob. It was a specialty toyota shop online. But if you Google toyota tacoma radio nob they will pop up. Was like 30 bucks shipped.

Farthest thing from it in my trd offroad. The suspension is super soft and plush. Almost too soft. Never once ever heard a 4 runner called stiff and jarring!
