In this video I talk about a new drawing technique that I started applying to my graphite drawings. This graphite drawing technique has completely changed the way I approach graphite drawings. This drawing technique has made me fall in love with graphite again and so I will be doing a lot more realistic graphite drawings in the future.

Hey Kirsty, have you ever heard of the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black pencils? They're a mixture of graphite and carbon which darkens them significantly and gets rid of the shine. The 8B is as dark as the black polychromos and I'd say they are better suited for use in conjunction with graphite than coloured pencil.

First off I love your artwork and I actually bought a print of one of your watercolors and second I use charcoal pencils to get super dark darks and it has helped a lot

Never tried my Polychromos in graphite drawings but I think I´ll try it. The result is amazing and maybe the will reduce working time. I normally use the Faber Castell PITT oil base black pencils for my darks like here. facebook.com/jbportraitzeichnungen/photos/a.1410170672355302.1073741849.670946676277709/1421338587905177/?type=3&theater They work fine, too. Maybe you will try them :) Thank you for your informative video. :)

kirsty. i am living paycheck to paycheck. i hardly have any money to spare and the money i do have goes to car insurance, food, and whatnot. i wanted to attend an art course but could never find one within my strictly limited price range. i was crying by myself one day with a stupid, old sketchbook in my lap because i was SO frustrated that i wasn't doing 'good enough' to afford a class that i needed. i went to youtube to watch a video my little sister had sent me, and one of your videos was a recommended video underneath the link i was on. i loved the cover photo, so i clicked on it and watched. i hope you know that ever since then, i've been using your videos as a literal bible for my art instruction. thank you so much for being so generous with your gifts and techniques; i don't think i'd still be doing art without your channel. you've given me so much courage to KEEP PRACTICING and one day i know that i will be confident enough to share my art with others. thank you so much, kirsty. i don't think i can thank you enough. so much love ♥️

Hi Kirsty - I have a suggestion for you. If you do not have one already, please try one of the Derwent Pencil Company "Onyx" pencils. It is the darkest black I have ever seen on a pencil ✏️. It lays down so easy, is beautiful & easy to use, lasts for ages, and is relatively cheap. I was given a set for Derwent's pencils for Christmas by my husband which included one of these Onyx pencils & I was so surprised by exactly how "bottomless abyss" black it was. I thoroughly recommend trying it to anyone, it's amazing. (And before you ask - no, I don't work for Derwent. I just think if you find something that works brilliantly, you should let others know !). Thanks for the great videos you do - they make me actually get of my arse and draw and paint because I am so motivated after watching them !

@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 6 лет назад
I never actually thought about doing this before and I think I'll give it a shot. I always use charcoal or a carbon pencil for my darkest areas in a graphite drawing, and while it helps with contrast it is REALLY messy, easy to smear and sometimes difficult to get fine detail with. Then I have to seal it pretty good with fixative after or it'll make a mess wherever I store it. Not sure why exactly it never occurred to me to just use a black colored pencil instead hahah

You might want to try Wolff carbon pencil. One pencil to do it all but compatible with graphite and matte finish as well. Nevertheless if you already have the colored pencil, then this technique works well too.

You might want to try a toga kuru pencil. It rotates as you draw so you never get hat flat edge, your pencil is always sharp.

Wonderful, full of clear technique instructions! Not boring at all. Thank you. Just wondering Kirsty if you have ever used silicon colour shapers instead of stumps? I haven't yet but I hear they work well so thinking I may buy a couple of them. I imagine they would be ideal for colours like pencil crayon and pastel since you just wipe off the tips but I have seen graphite artists use them, too.

Have you ever used a carbon pencil with your graphite drawings? There really good, if you don't know there a mixture of graphite and charcoal so you can get really dark values without the shine, the only thing with them though is you can't draw on top of normal graphite with them so you have to use the carbon pencil first and your graphite pencils after so your drawing from dark to light which for me took a bit to get used to.

Could you make a tutorial about how to make a good outline ? Techniques are nice, but a good outline is the basic of making a good drawing from the very beginning...
@pat4005
@pat4005 2 года назад
You mean breaking down the reference (photo or from life), into basic shapes to block-in a drawing? Just doing an outline is not good practice because it's very much more likely to be "off". Then you are wasting time doing detail on a drawing that is skewed. It's best to learn the basics of how to observe, and understand how to block in basic shapes and volumes (so parts get in the right place and are the right size in relation to eachother), and also learn how to understand perspective and utilize that in your drawings as well. Them adding the detail is easy. You can add learning values. When you can see and understand the values (like in greyscale), then you can plan out a strong successfull drawing (or painting). Even if it is out of your imagination or abstract.

Less stuff on Patreon, put some on Udemy so they can buy the drawing tutorial for that subject. With subscription people can't afford to keep paying it where as Udemy they have the piece of mind a lifetime access to the course. You could do this whole drawing of the dog and sell it as one course. Better in the long run for you and the students. 30 million regular users are on Udemy and there aren't many courses like you can do. It's pay for Udemy courses as they are affordable but I wouldn't pay for Patreon. The reason people come to RU-vid is because it's free, the reason they go to Udemy is because it's within their budget and they can pick and choose as they like. If pay for your course on their Kirsty. Thank you though, I love watching you work, it explain things really well ☺
