Best Technique for Star Focusing OMD cameras with Olympus Capture for Astrophotography

This is it. The absolutions best way to manually focus on stars. This works with telescopes too and Olympus Capture has many more features for astrophotography but in this one I just deal with how to get the best focus. Something that is very important in astrophotography. This is the easiest way to do it and I would venture to say that when compared to doing it with in camera features, using Olympus Capture makes it feel like a cake walk.

OMG! I have been shooting with Olympus for a year and a half. I had no idea that (a) this software even existed (shame on OLY) and (b) that it was this freaking powerful! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am now using it for macro (too). Mind blown.

Thanks for this, I think you should have left boost on sometimes, so it makes it easier for us to see what you were doing.

The older Em1 boost was not that great I an now using an EM1 Mk2 and I must agree the boost is a lot better in this version. Focusing with it is a lot easier too.

Shawnie thank you. I might have to set one up. I have not thought about doing it as I was mainly engrossed with setting up a library of content for people to get started with. And perhaps build a community of astrophotographers. I am quite active on the Olympus OMD Astrophotography group on FB.

Hello. Liking your channel. I have a question though that would really help me. I use Oly lenses on my mk 3 with starry AF and it is wonderful. But many times I mount the camera on a telescope. Focussing can be very difficult. I would like to see Olympus make it possible to turn on/off the focus magnifier manually without and Olympus lens on the camera. Possible?

Yes I do this all the time. I think in this video some of the focusing examples I make are on a telescope. You can assign a button for focus magnifier. You can also set the camera to manual focus and in your settings turn on focus magnify when in that mode.

My EM10 mark 3 does not support the features of Capture needed for this, Should it? I have checked the upgrade and am up to date?

Unfortunately the EM10 series is the only camera that Oly Capture does not work with.

All that would be even more useful if you used a Bahtinov mask.

200 bias frames? Why so many?

I do explain why so many in my calibration videos. Did a series on each type. It is because they are easy to take and its free noise reduction. Plus it does not have to be done at night.
