Saw this pop up as I’m about to release a similar video on my channel. Glad to see a nice honest video that doesn’t try convince people a $20 course is good. :)
Jamie thanks for your videos. I really appreciate it and it'll help me encourage my self to teach abroad. I hope someday I can teach abroad. God bless you always and stay safe always. Thanks again.🥰
Cheers for this video. Over the past year or two, the conversation seems to have changed from whether one SHOULD have a TESL / TESOL / TEFL, to WHICH institution / certificate one should choose. I get it, so many programs popping up. These videos are necessary. That's for informing new and developing teachers!
Hello! I did my own research on tefl courses. I wanted to do the tefl academy course that you said to do, and it showed up to be not fully accredited. It means that it is not globally recognized? Can you please help? You understand better than I do.
I was literally searching the internet a minute ago about tefl because it's new to me (I do know about celta though), your vid is very helpful. Thank you :)
Thank for sharing these very useful tips on this video, Jaimie. I love the content. I was a former ESL teacher as well in the Philippines and abroad before.
I"m thinking of moving to the PHilippines and looking into teaching as a job possibility. How hard was it for you to get a job there? What program did you get your TEFL from?
@@ESLTeacher365 yeah I m going to follow your all videos I have done masters in English literature from Pakistan and have 1 year teaching experience which TEFL course suits me kindly guide me.
@@nousheenyasir2768 It depends if you want to teach kids, adults or both! CELTA is fantastic for teaching adults, but if you want to teach kids, International TEFL Academy is a fantastic course.
Thank you for this video! I am an American and thinking about the Maximo Nivel school in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. I am a native English speaker with a BA and no teaching experience. it is about $1600 at this point, not including airfare and apartment rental for a 4-week course. If I round up to about $5000, just to have a buffer, it seems like a good deal for the whole experience. Living somewhere different, meeting some new people and experiencing something different, after the last couple years, may be nice.
Peace Jamie, thanks for your informative videos. I'm glad you mentioned you have an MA and clearly lots of international teaching experience. I am an ESL teacher in NYC with an MA and TESOL certificate. I want to transition into teaching ESL abroad. I have about 2 yrs of teaching experience in ESL, but I have not taught internationally yet. Which level of TEFL would you recommend??
LOVE this video. I'm majoring in World Language Education and I'm not sure if getting a TEFL certificate before graduating would be enough to teach now since I haven't graduated yet. Would you recommend the level 5 course for me?
TKT is not a course - it’s an exam. It would be most comparable to a 120 hour TEFL. So if you are looking for a high quality qualification from Cambridge you are better off doing a CELTA.
Thank you Jamie for this inspiring video .. Now that I watched this insightful comparison, I finally had a soild backgroud to make up my mind and choose CELTA regardless of the hefty price tag
It depends on where you want to teach and if you are a native speaker or not. I recommend filling out my survey so I can get more info and email you back!
Thank you so much for all the details you always provide. I have one question if u don’t mind. I am wondering whether Master TEFL 220 hours has level 5 or not. And if it’s internationally accredited or not. Thank you ❤
It looks like that course is a different course than Premier TEFL. I am not familiar with it and only recommend courses where I have personally spoken to the brand to verify them 🙂
Hi Really happy to see you everytime ,coz you encourage me tomake new advanced ideas specially for my career as an English teacher .. For non-native speakers the best route for teaching online is starting as a freelancer and finding clients in a specific niche. I’ll have a video coming out soon on a platform you can use to do this!
Hi Jamie, First of all, thank you so much for this useful video! I am from the Netherlands, and have obtained a Bachelor and Master's degree in Translation (English, French & Dutch). I have traveled around the US, NZ, and AUS after that so proving my C1 level of English wouldn't be a problem. But since English remains my second language and since I don't have any teaching experience whatsoever, I am definitely willing to pass/in need of passing one of these 'expensive' TEFL courses. I still haven't decided yet whether I want to teacher EFL in Australia, Canada or the UK, so I want my TEFL degree as international as possible. I'm just wondering, with my background, should I go for the CELTA course or choose for another TEFL course? Thank you so much in advance for your time! Daisy
Hi Daisy. To teach in English speaking countries you typically need to be an actual certified teacher because these countries don’t sponsor visas for TEFL teachers. I recommend looking into available visas for these countries and looking at the requirements.
Jaimie would love for your advice, I just subscribed to your channel. My sister is changing her career and she wants to be able to teach remotely anywhere in the world. She is considering an academy but I don't think really is worth it. Would you be able to provide a consultation with me on how can she start. My sister only has High School Degree.
Hi there! I have a Bachelors Degree but in something completely unrelated to education or English. No teaching experience. I am, however, a native speaker. Would you recommend a 120 hour tefl course or a celta? I was really leaning towards the celta, but the price point is what has me hesitant. I'm thinking of teaching online but would like to have the option of teaching abroad as well. Thank you
If you don’t have teaching experience I recommend CELTA or International TEFL Academy (link is in the description). The difference is that CELTA is more for teaching adults and ITA offers lifetime job search assistance but CELTA does not. I recommend starting with ITA and if you feel like you want more later on, you can always do a CELTA.
Hi Jamie, Thank you for this video!! Can you please help me? I have master's level education in the sciences and have some teaching experience with children and university students. I've debated going with ITA, but after seeing your video maybe I dont need something so exhaustive. What I'd really prefer is a program that offers other bonuses like visa and in country support (this would be my first time out of the country!). I would deeply appreciate your thoughts on this.
Hi, USA native here with a B.A.! I’ve earned a TESOL through VIPKid and worked as an online English Teacher with them for about 3 years. Is there anything else I need to continue working in this field of online teaching?
You can always get a level 5 TEFL course or do add-on courses like Business English. You can check out the description box for courses I recommend. Are you considering working for Outschool or freelancing?
Hi Jaimie . I have completed my Mba and passed IELTS test with the hope of doing a course abroad. But unfortunately it did not work out. So I have been training students for IELTS for the past 4 years. As a change of mind, I’m looking for a english course and ended up watching your vedio and it was worthy. Can you suggest whther TESOL OR TESL is best for teaching in English speaking countries??
Hi! TEFL/TESOL/TESL are all the same thing. Different countries use different acronyms. I am currently teaching in Australia using my CELTA certificate. This is the Cambridge brand TEFL certificate. Each country has different regulations to get a visa to teach there so I recommend choosing your top 5 countries and researching the requirements. Jobs can be competitive in English speaking countries so it’s helpful to have an actual teaching certificate as well as a TEFL. I hope this helps!
Hello! I have a teaching license with a clde endorsement (cultural/linguistic diverse education) does this have any standing for teaching english abroad or would you recommend getting certified in one of the options you mentioned?
I still recommend getting a TEFL if you want to teach ESL because you’ll want to learn the methods to teaching English as a Foreign Language. For interviews you may be asked to teach a demo lesson, so it’s best to be well prepared.
Hi. I'm a non native speaker from Brazil. I have some teaching experience and I'm looking for a certificate to make it easier for me to get an online job either in Brazil or in another country. Do you think I need other certifications such as TOEIC or TOEFL? Is a cheap TEFL certification enough in this case?
TOEIC and TOEFL will prove your English level. You’ll also need at least a 120 hour TEFL certificate to teach online. If you wonky want to work online then the cheaper TEFL should be enough. I have a video coming out soon on teaching online for non-native speakers which will have some extra tips!
Me too. I am brazilian living in USA for 12 years and moving to Portugal. Taught portuguese and English in school for 15 years but I would like to take Tefl course, I just don't know which one
It’s an interesting concept because you pay until you complete it. The faster you complete it, the cheaper it is. I haven’t personally done it yet, but may review it for a future video 🙂
@@ESLTeacher365 yeah, and there's financial aid available as well, you'd still need to pay 50 dollars to get the certificate mailed to u, but it's cool, peer reviewed assignments and micro lessons where u have to submit recorded vids of u teaching... pretty cool
Hi, how are you? My question is what tefl course have you taken? I mean the prices you've been explaining the whole video in order to get the certificate.
Hi Jamie! My name is Lucia. I sent an email but I would like to say that I loved your channel, it's very helpful. I'm searching about a not too expensive and trustworthy course. I woul love a feed back from you
How would you suggest to check the accreditation of particular TEFL course provider? For instance, I would like to teach English in Austria or another European country, how can I be sure that particular certificate will be recognized in this country?
You come across so authentic ! I have a BA degree and I'm currently teaching on cambly (only about a month!). I'm interested in completing a TEFL course but without a practicum ! I'm only planning to teach online. What do you think of TEFL Professional Development Institute (120 hr)... I saw a link for a FREE 120 hr course with them but you have to pay to receive the actual paper Certificate !! This whole area is a bit of a maze 😳
If you are only teaching online, then you don’t typically need to invest in an expensive course. However, a quality course will give you strategies and resources to improve your teaching. I recommend The TEFL Academy Level 3 course if you want to teach online. They have an entire module on online teaching and the course is worth it in my opinion. Free courses are usually just articles you read and quizzes.
Hey, thanks for the video. I'm doing a TEFL from International Open Academy right now. It's 120 hours, all online and accredited. I have a Bachelor's degree. My main goal is to teach English online for 6 months to a year. A job like VIPKID would have been great but oh well. I want something like that. Do you think this certificate is good enough to land a job like that ?
So level 5 courses for those with zero teaching experience and a bachelors degree, correct? I have 2 under grad degrees and I’ve been researching changing careers and giving back to others such a teaching English. I’ve been eyeing a level 5 course for quite sometime
Yes I recommend level 5 courses if you don’t have previous teaching experience because they go more in-depth than the basic 120-hour courses. It’s best to do a course that has a teaching practicum so you can get feedback on your teaching.
Can i teach english as a non-native speaker if i know almost no grammar? I'm pretty fluent in speech and writing, but it's all instinctual and subconscious. When someone asks me why is something the way it is in english all i can say is "it's just is". Would these courses help me bridge that gap or are they more for people who just need to brush up on their already existing understanding of the language?
You absolutely need to know grammar to teach English. If you do a TEFL course it won’t teach you the grammar, it will teach you how to teach grammar. I recommend brushing up on English grammar first. There are lots of helpful books!
Hello, this video is very informative and I really appreciate it. I personally will be graduating in 2025 with a degree in modern languages (Japanese) and I want to apply for the jet program to be an assistant teacher in Japan. I know jet does not require a certificate or experience in teaching but it is recommended. I have no prior experience teaching at all but I’ll have a bachelors soon so I’m not sure weather or not If I should go for the middle cost of certification or the more expensive one based on my situation. I would be so grateful if you could give me some insight, I am hoping to get a certification before I apply for jet in fall 2025 while also going to full time university (so I need a more flexible certification process if possible if you know of one).
Hello there ! What would you recommend for someone who has teaching experience and only has a TKT and no college degree, to take as a course ? The reason is just to be able to apply for jobs in Europe, as right now located in France and the goal is to teach kids and teenages but has experience in teaching adults aswell Thank you 🎉
Hi, thank you. This video has been very informative. wanted to ask your recommendation on the TEFL which is accepted by the Government of Canada. I am actually planning to move to Canada for work. I have a 10 years of teaching experience, so I think the MID-LEVEL TEFL would do. I am looking to do mostly online teaching. What would be your recommendation specially on the one the Canadian employer would accept. Thank you.
Do you already have a visa to work there? It will depend where you are teaching - private academies, universities, etc. In general, you’ll want a quality TEFL with teaching practice like CELTA or CertTESOL.
@@ESLTeacher365 The visa is in the process, we have applied for the Canadian PR. I was thinking to apply for online teaching. I am ready to work both in private academies, universities, and online as long as the TEFL certification allows. Can you suggest any online site to acquire the appropriate certification please?
I haven’t heard very good things about i to i. Some people report having to redo assignments over and over again. The certs I recommend are listed in this video description.

In USA I did some research and I found that you have to attend a course accredited by the ACCET or CEA?? I can't find any information of this on RU-vid. I'm serious about teaching and want to get the right accredited course in my country. I really need help, can you recommend any courses in America that are accredited? Thank you for reading.
Hi Jamie. Your videos are wonderful and quite helpful. Could you please suggest me too as to which course should I go for? You’ll want a level 5 certificate and you need to take an English exam based on where you want to teach (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge). I have a video on how to teach abroad as a non-native speaker. Just search for it on my Teach Abroad Step by Step playlist.
Hi, I live in France and am 22 years old. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Design, which doesn't have anything to do with English. However, I am currently searching to obtain a certificate to teach English online or abroad. Do you think the 120-hour option on the Premier TEFL website would be a good choice for me, or should I consider a higher level ?
Hi, Jamie! I have 8 years of experience teaching or training adults in English Language Training; I have also worked as a Curriculum Developer (ELT) and Content Writer. In your knowledge or understanding, how is Trinity CertTESOL? I don't want to teach young learners at all. Is TEFL mostly about teaching young learners? Will it be worth every penny if I go for Trinity CertTESOL? Please guide if you can!
CertTESOL is the Trinity brand TEFL. I haven’t taken it but I did take CELTA and they are similar. They are very good courses for teaching adults. It depends on how you want to use it. It’s usually for new teachers or a top up for experienced teachers. There’s also more advanced courses like DELTA.
Hi, i dont have a teaching degree but other major master from aus uni😅 n i have no teaching experience before. I wanna be a english teacher in asia country in future, eg. China. Which course is recommended for me?
I’m not sure what test you are referring to. A TEFL is a teaching certification. If you want to teach abroad, you’ll need an accredited TEFL and I recommend getting one with teaching practice (typically a level 5).
Hi ,i am from india ,i have my bachelor in education in two core subjects political and english and also have teaching experience ,which tefl level would you recommend and from from which site should i do it?
I only recommend certificates where I have personally spoken with the company about their certificate. I haven’t spoken with TEFL International. You can find my recommendations in the description box.
It depends on the country. I have a video about teaching abroad without a degree. Each country has different visa restrictions and even some visas or requirements of specific schools will be more demanding than others.
CELTA is the Cambridge brand of TESOL. I recommend this if you would like to teach adults or in specific countries which prefer CELTA. I have a video just on my CELTA experience that you can check out.
I am sub teacher in florida , 1.5 years and wanna know if that teaching experience gonna be valuable , i was thinking that celta or cert tesol would be good or just need tefl Ok because i am already teaching. i dont have a BA as a sub doesnt need that to do subbing in florida where i live.

If i study English Teaching as a master in a non-English speaking country, can it be passed as tefl/tesol,.. ? Or do I have to take a certification for teaching abroad??
Hey Jaime I am a bit confused ...... I have no experience of teaching English before and i am a non-native speaker ; i would really like to teach abroad What level should I choose i can afford from 250 up to 400 And also where do I get those courses , in TOEFL ?
If you are a non-native speaker without experience I highly recommend a level 5 certificate. A basic 120 isn’t enough to prepare you, in my opinion. For the English language level exams you first need to decide where you want to teach. Different countries accept different exams. Any ideas of where you’d like to teach?

Will the TEFL course training company have exams at the end of course ? And is there any failure on doing the exam [ i mean if you fail the exam should you retake it or what ? ] So will the TEFL course training company give the hard copy or they just send the certification in my email just to pop up on my screen ? And take my ipad wherever i go to show my certification ? If they send me the hard copy or the paper certification how will it reach me ? And how would i apply to the schools that i chose to teach in ?

Moreover, I'm planning to teach abroad and thus, I'm searching to do TEFL either online from other countries or from Delhi, India itself. Unfortunately, I'm not able to find a good institute for the TEFL certificate course and it is quite exhausting. Yes, CELTA is one of the most expensive courses. However, they don't offer job search assistance. So I personally recommend ITA over CELTA if you are looking for job search help.
