Kudos to Sony indeed! This lens seems too good to be true! When I heard about it's weight loss to mark 1 I said it never gonna be internal zoom. Even though I kindda like the compactable design like Tamron and Canon but in terms of video and gimbal balance internal zoom means a lot! Also the risk of sucking dust will be almost eliminated. Bravo Gordon for another excellent review!

Zooming in to 200mm does decrease the depth of field, but walking backwards to keep the subject the same size increases it again by exactly as much. Saying it another way: Distance to subject and focal length cancel each other out when it comes to depth of field, given a certain size of the subject in the picture. Or: depth of field is determined by magnification and aperture. The blurrier background you're relating to around 7:00 is not caused by magnification, but by background compression. Zooming in and walking backwards increases the size of the background relative to the subject, and the bokeh with it.

I don't have a Sony (Fuji fanboy here) and probably won't ever buy one, but I still thoroughly enjoy your videos. Great stuff Gordon.

That lens would have been very handy today, I used 18-105 to shot a rodeo and got some great action shots, could have done with a little more focal length. Sadly though this was a ticketed event and I wasn't able to obtain a press/media pass, so that I could submit to stock libraries. Still the shots are now in my arsenal.

I know this will only be true for shooters who use video, af and other more 'modern' features. But you have to wonder on 'keep the glass change the body' in the last few years. It seems to me that new concepts and i am guessing computer modeling of lens designs makes massive jumps like this possible. You could almost argue that the new motor system, added features, less weight and better results of the MK1 vs MK2 versions within a 4-5 year gap are as big as the difference between the 4-5 years between the A9 and the A1.....

@gordon I have a very specific and stupid question. Do you know if the feet are interchangeable between the mk1 and mk2? So a person could keep the same third party arca foot and move it to the new lens?

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WTH THIS MEANS: If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable My Sony FE 4.5-5.6/70-300 G OSS lens has a switch on the barrel marked "Optical Steady Shot: On/Off" My A7R4A has an option of turning IBIS (in body image stabilization) on and off. Question: When IBIS (in body image stabilization) is turned on, should the Optical Steady Shot switch on the lens barrel be turned on or off? Note: I have seen statements to the effect that IBIS and lens stabilization should not be used together. Does this apply to the A7R4A ? They work together. Here is the explanation from Sony. ”If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable. When both the camera and lens have the feature, the lens stabilization overrides the menu system of the camera and the systems work in conjunction with each other to provide a 5-axis stabilization system. If you connect a lens that does not have the SteadyShot feature or turn off the feature on a lens that does, then the feature selection is available within the camera menu and the camera.”

Gordon, did you notice something loose in the lens? I have a copy of the mark 2 that has internal movement when handled, makes me wonder if it's defective.

Amazing Lens and great review Gordon! Sony is sovereign! Great sensors, AF, Cameras and lenses! But… I’ll continue a Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus shooter! I have so many lenses ( mft and Z) and equipment in those systems that is difficult to think in any change right now. They are still working great for me! Anyway… Sony remains in my radar!

Would be interesting to see how this lens with a 2x teleconverter compares to the 100-400mm GM.

good for sony users, to me the 70-200mm is my bread and butter, I have it slapped on 90% of the time on my 1dx I can't wait to move to RF see how the new RF lenses fare but I picked canon a decade ago to have that 70-200 and it's fantastic, glad sony users get to experience the same bliss I'm curious though, some manufacturer do not communicate on focal shrinking of their lenses, canon doesn't have that problem, but tamron is pretty awful, not giving us the full 200mm.. thanks for the great video as usual

price increase is a bit much so i will wait until after the holidays. 24-70 should be up next for replacement.

I'm curious to see a tear down of this lens from LensRental. Sony has managed to make a lighter lens than Canon despite using an outer-shell in metal (Canon is plastic). I'm wondering how they managed that since both lenses uses 17 elements. Is an extended barrel heavier ?

This might be the best overall 70-200 f/2.8 lens of all time.

Expecting a 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II with OSS since all the sony lenses are 100 to 300$ off now...I smell an out of nowhere release bro!

It has a mode switch for taking pictures of erratic/unstable subjects, like Kardashians and the like.

As a recent convert to Sony, I don't yet have the 70-200 in my kit -- I guess this means it's time to sell a kidney. BTW Your reviews always fill me with trust, so thank you!

No comparison at all with Nikon's Z version? The Canon is mentioned over and over, but I would have expected at least mentions of the Z lens.

Historically since the film era the holy trinity of full frame zoom lenses are rarely updated so fast, every five years. Canon and Nikon full frame lenses for mirrorless cameras are five to seven years younger than most Sony full frame mirrorless equivalent ones and that permits them to have a better recent optical technology. So Sony must hurry and update at least its holy trinity of zoom lenses of f/2.8 and f/4 the next two years in order to be competitive with Canon and Nikon mirrorless lenses. Sony is the leader in mirrorless technology but Canon is far more powerful with lenses and Sony feels that. At the end of the day the glass is the king and the main factor for the choice of a camera mount.

The RF version looks super cool reminds me of Star Wars.

For anyone that does Photography for a hobby ..How would you justify spending that amount .. if you are not making any income from it !!!! Such as myself !! It's a very valid question .. "You buy within your means ,You never buy to put yourself into debt" Ever looked at doing a Video of ..Using 2 Lenses at 2 different price points ... then the images you take ...then viewers can make there own mind up on what offers better VFM [ Value for money ] Venture outside your comfort zone Capture planes at the Airport ...and capture some ships anchored offshore or sailing by , Use Marine traffic app if your unsure where to go ....

Not a good landscape lens. Too big, heavy, and expensive for the reach. Inferior and shorter than the 100-400 when adding a 1.4 or 2 TC. Great lens to shoot people.

I'll still take the Canon RF over this, it's so much easier to carry..

Canon looks poor compared to this, dust-pump design and no TC's allowed, slower AF and weaker optically, also worse magnification. Well done Sony, no compromises to get weight down. Can't wait for the 24-70 GM II and 16-35 GM II. Selling off my remaining EF lenses ASAP.
