Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II Lens Review
Album of ultra high-definition images: flic.kr/s/aHBqjAK1nk
Order the lens: bhpho.to/3JWHo0B
This lens is a Mark 2 version of the 10 year old FE 70-200 F4 G. The new Macro version of this lens features faster linear XD focus motors and a Magnification ratio of 0.5x at all focal lengths. This lens has a magnification ratio of 0.75x when used in APS-C mode or when using an APS-C camera. It has a 1:1 Full Macro capability if the lens is attached to a 2.0x teleconverter.
When using a 2.0x Teleconverter and APS-C mode the lens has a full-frame equivalent angle-of-view of 600mm
The lens is lighter and shorter than the original FE 70-200 F4 G and may present a viable alternative to the larger and heavier telephoto zoom lenses for this looking to travel light.

Excellent review! The 0.5 macro throughout the zoom range along with stability makes it a standout and very versatile lens. On the sony R5 one can crop even more & with the added stability more handheld flexibility becomes possible. For travel it is an ideal lens - from architecture to landscape to semi macro detail. Add to it customization buttons.

Thank you. An absolutely great coverage of this lens. A year later I finally decided to buy a copy of the 70-200/4 GII even though I already own the excellent 70-200/2.8 GM II for exactly the reasons you stated in your video. It hasn’t arrived yet but really looking to adding it to my bag with my A7CR and A7CII I’ve put together for light travel. Also got the new FE 24-50/2.8 G but yours is the first video having me wonder if I should have gotten the 20-70/4 G. It’s kind of a combo for landscape but also for capturing people so love its small size. Really learn so much from your videos. Take care.

Great video, as usual. Some of the information you provide in your videos on top of the usual specs and opinions (like the usage of noise reduction software to offset additional noise, adjusting ones technique to achieve nice background separation even with F4 etc.) make them cut above IMO. Being a hobbyist and a student I always appreciated that. Regarding the lens it would be interesting to see MTF chart and how it compares with the original 70-200 F4. Is the sharpness of this lens significantly improved over the original?

Brilliant review Mark, and to me looks like a brilliant lens. Couple that lens with the 1.4 Tele converter on a A7CR would be brilliant, and compliment the 35F1.4 and 55 F1.8 (Zeiss) Sony lenses only leaves me short in the 20mm range to have a great kit. So do I do the Sony 20mm F1.8 or the Sony 20-70F4 lens to complete ….so hard to decide.

I am still using this lens - long after this review. Check out my recent work at a Political Rally : flic.kr/s/aHBqjBbR8Y I own and use the FE 20-70F4 G for those times I don't want to be changing lenses and the 20mm F1.8 for the times I don't mind changing lenses. I think the FE 20-70 F4 G should have been awarded lens of the year for 2023. Having a standard zoom that also covers a very wide 20mm angle of view, and also has an exceptionally close focusing distance, makes this an extremely versatile lens. I help photographers make difficult lens choices on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.

But the downside to the Tamron macro is it's only sharp in the middle of frame and gets messy oof moving outwards. I have both the Tamron 70-180 versions... Plus the focus tracking doesn't hold while zooming. I'll be moving to the Sony 70-200 very soon...

Interesting that you focused on size and weight so much. That is one of the things that draws me towards this lens. My goto lens pair when walking is the 24-105 and 100-400 with the A7RV. Shifting to the 20-70 and 70-200 would save over 800grams. As I get older this becomes more important. Add the field ability to do macro without taking an extra lens. Sony have got a winner here imo.

I will attempt to shed weight everywhere - this extends to tripod heads, tripods, filters, camera bags etc etc - even shedding a couple of ounces on a single item is important when you possibly have more than 10 items in your bag. I never check luggage, so even my clothes are lightweight and dry overnight when washed.

Weight is the exact reason that I am seriously considering changing from Tamron 17-28, 35-150 to 20-70G, and 70-200 G2 with tc 1.4, which gives me more reach. May consider adding 14mm GM for star photography, which I always like to do.

Hey Mark, thanks as always for your great reviews with real photos and going over the technical details with samples. Those make your videos always so much more enjoyable than most of the "influencer" style videos out there. I have a suggestion though, it would be great if you would upgrade your audio. The microphone of your headset is not only pretty bad sounding, the plosives are also making some harsh plop sounds here as you were too close with the mic to your mouth. It is hard to listen to the whole video. I'm coming from a sound engineers point of view, so I always pay more attention to these things than others, but it was especially annyoing here. Just a minor suggestion though to make your awesome videos even better. Have a great day and thanks again! Might get this lovely lens.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Год назад
I was using a new microphone and was due to catch a plane to Bali in just a few hours time - so it is what it is I am afraid. The levels of the new mic were much quieter than my old microphone so I chose (unwisely) to move it closer to my mouth. I have to use a headset microphone with noise cancelling as I have to record my videos in a normal room rather than a sound studio. There is, sadly, not much profit in putting these videos out - especially when I invest in extended shoots to showcase the products.

Hello Mark, very nice video. I'm just in trouble between this and 70-200 f/2.8 GMII. Weight difference is not much and not an issue. Dimension and price are in favour of f/4 version. I use it for outdoor sports, and sometimes but most rarely for indoor spor (artistic skate), on my a7r3.(sometimes iso goes very high indoor). How is the sharpness and contrast of this f4 G2 in comparison to the GM2? I've also in plan to buy tc 1.4x in future (but only for outdoor use). What you suggest me?

Mark, I would want to add an Arca Swiss foot to this lens to replace the factory tripod collar to match my tripods. This looks like a different tripod attachment than the f2.8 70-200 GM II, where there there are many aftermarket Arca Swiss foot options( RRS, Wimberly, Leofoto, etc). For this new lens, are there aftermarket options for the collar, or would I need to add an Arca Swiss plate to the bottom of the factory tripod collar(adding to weight modestly)?

Hi Mark. As a birder, I'm curious about how much penalty you pay with regards to IQ with the 2X tele converter as compared to the 1.4X. Also, I'm not sure I completely understand the 900mm FF equivalent number. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it you are adding a 2x tc to get 400mm and then the APSC crop to get 600mm and then a 4K crop in post to get you to the final 900mm + or -. Is that right?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 10 месяцев назад
You pay a slightly greater penalty with the 2.0x tele over the 1.4x tele + your ISO is going to double with the 2 stop loss of light compared to the 1.0 stop with the 1.4x. I always prefer to crop in post before even considering using either tele. I only reach for the Tele when my subject is less than a 1/4 of the size of my frame in APS-C mode when using a 50 or 60 megapixel sensor. A 2.5x post production crop (compared to a 1.5x APS-C mode crop) applied to a 600mm lens equals 1500mm before you even factor in the teleconverter. The original 70-200 F2.8 GM is a larger, heavier and slower focusing lens without the close-up capabilities of this new Macro. If size, weight, speed of focus and macro are not important to your own workflows you could consider the GM lens with a wider maximum aperture.

Can it shoot an with the 2x tele converter? I don't fully understand the macro ratio yet and I see other macro review that can shoot bugs with their hair showing, but highest macro lens should be 1:1 which is this 70-200 with that 2X tele converter but I haven't see or remember anyone showing any macro with their hair and eyes showing with this lens. I want to get this lens to shoot macro and tele, pair with a 16-35 f4 power zoom or 20-70mm (thanks for showing its macro capability!) but most likely will get the 16-35 to get more coverage (originally I thought to just get the 20-70 which will be one lens to cover a lot but it will not be ultrawide and tele enough so I thought to get these 2 lens instead, I want to support such ultrawide to tele lens but maybe we haven't get to a point to able to have 16-200 in one lens with 1:1 macro yet), do you think these are good enough? I don't get it - IS or IS the 70-200 mark 2 with or without this feature ??? I found this: My Sony FE 4.5-5.6/70-300 G OSS lens has a switch on the barrel marked "Optical Steady Shot: On/Off" My A7R4A has an option of turning IBIS (in body image stabilization) on and off. Question: When IBIS (in body image stabilization) is turned on, should the Optical Steady Shot switch on the lens barrel be turned on or off? Note: I have seen statements to the effect that IBIS and lens stabilization should not be used together. Does this apply to the A7R4A ? They work together. Here is the explanation from Sony. ”If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable. When both the camera and lens have the feature, the lens stabilization overrides the menu system of the camera and the systems work in conjunction with each other to provide a 5-axis stabilization system. If you connect a lens that does not have the SteadyShot feature or turn off the feature on a lens that does, then the feature selection is available within the camera menu and the camera.”

Is the image quality of the new 70-200 F4 substantially better than the image quality of those other lenses? Any other observations or suggestions? Thank you again.

Thanks - I always say that seeing is all the proof you need - I have posted ultra high definition images to my Flickr pro account - view on a large 4K screen and zoom in. That's all the information you need to make your decision. Forget the MTF charts and technical jargon. I personally will now use this Macro zoom over the E 70-350 for most of my work and carry the 1.4x Tele when I need a bit more reach.

I use the Sony 90mm macro primarily for the macro. I also have the new 70-200 f2.8 mark 2. I rarely find the need to carry both at once. How does the 70-200 f4 compare with the 90mm macro capabilities? That’s a comparison I’d be very interested in seeing.

The new 70-200 could be as sharp as the 90mm Macro (we will need to wait for independent MTF charts to be sure, or you could just zoom in on the review images I have shared).

I should have added that the AF speed of the zoom is probably 10 times faster than the 90mm Macro and the bokeh is better.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills I will never get rid of the 90mm Macro Lens. I actually focus manually when doing very close close-up photography. I don't rely on AF in those cases. It's such an easy lens to use where the zoom will be more cumbersome. But if heading out, traveling and not shooting bugs, etc., in my backyard, this lens is the ticket. I already have the 9 years old 70-200 f4.0 which is fine for what I use it for. I just can't justify spending more for a lens that covers the exact focal range. Besides, I love the internal zooming and really dislike lens that extend. All that grinding going on inside bothers me. As an aside, I have the Sigma 24-70 Art and it also satisfies my macro needs. It comes down to $$$. I'm waiting for the arrival of the a6700, which I will put to a lot of use.

Would the new 70-200 f/4 GM mark with a teleconverter be a better investment than the older Sony 100-400 GM?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 3 месяца назад
The 100-400 GM is a great lens so will likely have the edge compared to using a 70-200 with 2x converter. I provide ultra HD examples in all my lens reviews so users can discern the quality with, and without, teleconverters. I also make Raw files available to my Patrons on Patreon.com/markgaler. Seeing is believing - nobody should need to take the word of a reviewer or influencer.

I was really hoping Sony would be able to make it as compact and light as the Canon's counterpart... 46g lighter than mk1? It seems that Sony didn't really try too hard to make it lighter. Also, no aperture ring is a big minus, too.
@WestVillage-vv3hg
@WestVillage-vv3hg Год назад
They could have, but they'd have to give up TC compatibility. They simply made a choice to add TC compatibility instead of more size savings.
@Someone-lc6dc
@Someone-lc6dc Год назад
@@WestVillage-vv3hg Perhaps... How come they didn't include an aperture ring? It's a G lens after all. 1699USD is also a huge increase over the old version. Canon charges 1499 for their f4.
@andymiles5156
@andymiles5156 Год назад
Agreed. With the lightweight primes Sony have created recently I was hoping for lighter than Canon. As it is, it’s not enough weight saving over the GMii, though it is much more compact. Worse is the missing aperture ring. Having an aperture ring frees a dial up on the camera, but as soon as you have one lens that doesn’t have an aperture ring that becomes more problematic. I don’t think I’ll be swapping the GM for this lens as the weight saving isn’t enough and I want the aperture ring.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Год назад
You are forgetting the Macro capability with quad linear XD focus motors- They could have made it as light as the Canon without the Macro capability. The fact that I can get into my medium sized messenger bag with the camera attached is an achievement that is still worth having.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills I think a lot of people were waiting for the lightest 70-200 f4 ever made, especially having seen the 20-70 f4, which is a very light and compact lens. I'm sure there will be some buyers, but at this price point, and for what it offers, it probably won't be a bestseller. I guess at some point Sony will have to revise the price and bring it down to 1499. Hopefully, Tamron will be coming up with an updated version of their 70-180, which will probably be lighter than the current version. Sure, we lose 20mm on the long end, but it's a faster lens that can compete against the GM.

I have a question, or actually 2 questions that I don't get an answer to from sony's support: One concerns what kind of variant of JPEG - "algorithm" is used for the images directly out of the camera. I always use the largest file format and best quality. According to a list, there are DIFFERENT variants where the quality has increased for each variety. The second issue concerns images of objects that are turquoise and especially turquoise that goes in the green direction where the camera makes them bright blue instead. If you raise the color temperature to insanely high numbers such as 8000 -9900 Kelvis, the object is rendered with the correct color tone, but then everything else becomes completely crazy instead. No one has raised this problem on youtube!

I have heard from several reviewers on youtube, i.a. that if you have a Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II with OSS = built-in stabilization in the lens, this MUST COOPERATE with that in the camera = IBIS. But I get this message: !Lens Invalid with this lens. Perform the action on the lens if the lens has a SteadyShot switch. How should I interpret this? Is it a "bug" in the firmware? Is the information about collaboration between the two just nonsense? Now when everyone reviews the new 70-200 f4 macro it sounds the same: They work together, BOTH US in the lens AND IBIS in the camera work together. Listen. ".... and I saw very little difference between the lens using both OSS and IBIS and the lens relying on just the IBIS..." So: What about that thing? Does anyone really KNOW how it works? Grateful for answers ! There must be a REASON for the message I get on the camera display. Either I have been misled to believe that OSS+IBIS = TRUE or I have misunderstood everything.

Do you think some consumers who have the 2.8GM feel ripped off by Sony..in the sense that this F4 has that "Macro capabilities"..and that Sony should have put this in the 2.8 first..especially for the price point that the 2.8GM cost..you would think this is and should be in the lens..rather than an F4..that cost less..now you have to consider have a choice or losing a stop of light and getting that "macro capability", especially well for wedding photographers..detail shots..etc..and lesser price point as well..or would you people still consider the 2.8GM?

It’s worth noting that a firmware update can’t deliver a Subject Recognition AI processor which is a hardware and not firmware driven feature. Firmware could deliver the focus bracketing + breathing compensation (that this lens doesn’t have a problem with).
