I forgot to mention that the Jumpstart actually shows the current temperature, even if it's not at the desired temp yet which is another plus! CHECK THEM BOTH OUT HERE bit.ly/GoHepring_HeatingKit - Also, leave your video ideas in the replies to this comment :)
This video was exactly what I need! Just got a turtle and the light for his basking spot was broken so since I'm upgrading his tank this week I figured I'd upgrade most of his stuff and I was told to get 4 different thermostat/light combos by 4 different people lol so confusing! This breakdown helps a lot 👍😊
GoHerping hi my name is Kenny and I'm thinking about buying a alligator but I don't know much about them if you could I know you don't have a alligator but if you could help me or give me any tips about them I'll be very glad cuz you really who I go to for what I need any tips about reptiles lizards or turtle and I'm just asking and seeing if you know anything about alligators that I should know before I buy one thank you love your videos and I was here when you had 150 subscribers
i ordered microclimate evo lite t-stat for my spinner ball python, it was affordable and microclimate products are usually well reviewed, so i'm hyped to see how it performs. thank u so much for the video.
I believe the jumpstart or Sandalwood does have a safety feature where when it hits 108 it turns off no matter what, just in case the heating element malfunctions.
I've used the jump start with my Kenyan sand boa, ball pythons, and beardie's. Never had an issue and I love them. I found some metal hooks from a local dollar store (check the gardening aisles), and used those to hang the thermostat. 😎👌🏿
I just got a jumpstart for my ball python and I don’t have a temperature gun, so what temperature should I set the thermostat to be the right temperature?
I have a zilla on my 10 gallon baby tank (what I put new babies in, also quarantine) and a jumpstart on my large tanks. I like both. But I think I may buy another jumpstart for my 10 gallon because they seem better and have worked more well.
I just adopted a lesser morph bp yesterday! Everything went better then expected haha 😁 Only thing that was that I was struggling to keep the temp high enough let alone regulate it ... have you ever used the magic fly thermostat before?
The thing about the accuracy, though, is that it isn't as important as consistency. For example, if you have the Zilla one and want the temperature to be 90°F but it only heats that area to 84 (and you check it with a Temp Gun and it does 84 consistently), then just set it to 96 and that should make the heated area about 90. That said, I still prefer the Jumpstart and that's the one I use.
which thermostat is best to use for ceramic heat emitter bulbs? some people said zilla and jumpstart are not good because after a while turning off and on they eventually start not working properly which could possibly cause fire hazard
I bought a thermostat and it only reaches 108°, however a lot of that heat is lost in the substrate so my hotspot is around 75°. Any advice on how to raise the temperature? I read that hot spots are supposed to be 90°.
So I have a corn snake who likes to mess up the probe and I also don’t know where to put the probe exactly. I don’t really know what exactly to set the thermostat to. I set it to 85 but it’s not really heating the aspen
Hello Alex, or anyone who can help LOL but I am trying to heat my pacman enclosure and need some help. The temp in my room is 60-70, so I have a ceramic heat emitter but it only brings it up to 75 in the daytime. I'm planning on getting a thermostat to bring it up to 80? But my real question is, is it necessary to manually adjust the temp to bring it down a few degrees at night for their "day/night cycles" or can I just keep the thermostat at a set temp all day? Thanks!
The other thing is the way they work is by turning the heat pad off and on, you may have measured the temp at different points of when the pad has been turned on and off
Yesterday I moved my ball python from a 40 gallon tank to a 75 gallon, and her heat lamp can no longer reach her! So, I'm investing $56 in a heat lamp and a thermostat. Thanks so so much for this video, so helpful! I'm gonna go with the jumpstart one, it seems easier to work.
Ive been thinking about purchasing a JumpStart for my heat lamp. I have it connected to a timer. Do you know if it reset the JumpStart (temperature) every time It turns off?
You should try the Habistat dimming thermostat. It's not digital but is the best out there in the UK. Sadly, I'm in the US and can't get this product. It works best with a heat lamp, deep heat projector, or heat emitter. It's a bit expensive, but it is definitely worth it!
Hi! I was just wondering, would plug in timers suffice as a makeshift thermostat until I purchase some? And one more question! I bought under the tank heating pads for my bps, but the instructions said to stick the pads to the outer-side of the terrarium.... I put it as low as I possibly could to the substrate, understanding bps benefit from belly heat, so will the side-stuck pads be OK for them, or should I readjust and put them underneath? Thanks a ton! 🖤
I just got my first BP in November. I put my UTH on the side and completely regret it. now i have to buy another one to install on the undersized to keep her hot hide warmer. Biggest thing I've learned is to make sure your tank is raised off the surface to avoid trapping the heat (trapped heat could cause a fire when the shelf or stand heats up). my Zoo Med UTH came with little feet for the corners that would raise the tank about 1/4". Also instead of a timer buy a light dimmer (rheostat) I got one for $12 off amazon that works okay (link below) but since it's a manual way to adjust the heat I have to check on her several times a day, especially with the freezing and swinging temps of winter ( I'm in upstate NY and my home heating system isn't very stable). also FYI mine just died this weekend. It's been in constant use since 11/4/17 when I got my BP I have a 100w red heat bulb plugged into it although i plan on switching to a ceramic heat emitting bulb when i get a thermostat. Also depending on where you live the UTH won't be able to keep it warm enough. Such is the case for myself and my house is kept, roughly, at 70. I have the Zilla thermostat and I read about it when I got it. The way it works is it shuts off at the temperature indicated on the dial. So if it's set to 90 degrees that will be the maximum temperature. But I'm not sure what the threshold is when it turns on the heat source. I noticed all the temperatures were below the select the temperature.
I got a heat gun today so I'll be testing mine out. I have a ball python and since they use belly heat I buried the probe in the substrate right underneath the hide so it's measuring the belly Heat.
@Austin Fox this wasnt even necessary. a bunch of people recommend to put the probe between the glass and pad or outside the tank where the hot area is. if you have a tank that shuts completely, you dont want to squeeze the probe cord. so maybe this person didnt want to squeeze the probe cord and it isnt as simple as you assume
@Austin Fox i never said those recommendations are correct but when there's people spouting different ideas, of course the OP is gonna be wondering what to do. all you needed to say was to cut a small hole for probe cord. your berating the person for a simple question was entirely unnecessary.
I prefer the Zilla Analog, bc I was unsure if the Jumpstart digital had an internal battery which would keep track of the temperature in the case of a power outage. If I had the thermostat set for 90 degrees, and I lose power, even for just a second... or a minute or two, will the Jumpstart turn back on and resume the selected temp? With the Zilla’s analog, it will, no doubt because it is analog. So if I am not home/on vacation, which one is more likely to maintain the temp I set? I know the Zilla analog will, but I’d be interested to hear if the Jumpstart keeps the selected temp after being d/c from power. Thanks for a great vid, Alex!
How do you get the probe in to tge enclosure and still be able to secure your enclosure so that your snake doesn't escape. I have a pastel jigsaw baby ball. And i really need to get a thermostat for my heating pad (im currently turning it on and off and my temp gun) but im getting ready to buy my thermostat but am scared that once I get it i will end up not being able to close my screen top enclosure. #worried please help!!
Probe style thermostats will always be inaccurate in terms of the readings they put out, this is due to the nature of how probes are intended to operate and be used. Reptile keepers attempting to achieve basking spot temps, MUST verify the true temps at surface via infra-red temp gun. Any probe, be that attached to a digital thermometer or thermostat, cannot effectively measure a surface temperature, only the air surrounding the surface itself. Likewise, any probe style thermostat can be relied upon ONLY to control and ensure temps are stable, the setting is all but irrelevant once you achieve the true temp you need at surface through initial experimentation. TL:DR Thermostat exclusively for control & Infrared Temp Gun to verify the true temperature output.
I'm considering getting a lizard in the future, and I was considering what thermostat to get. I was wanting to use an overhead lamp, but from what I've read, you don't want an on/off thermostat for a light because that will throw off the day/night cycle. Unfortunately, I can't find a thermostat available in the US that only dims, and rheostats dim but they don't have probes, so if the temperature in the room changes while I'm not there to correct it, then the lizard will be too hot/cold. Do either of these dim the lights without turning them off? Alternately, should I just get two lights and have one hooked to the thermostat, and just use the other light to keep the day/night cycle?
I have 3 Zillas too the don't quite keep to a 90 degree basking spot. What I did to fix this is just set it to 95, and the thermostat actually does keep the hot spot at 90.
It would turn the ceramic heat emitter on and off as needed. So basically, if you have it set to 100 degrees, it'll turn on, get up to like 103, turn off, drop down to like 97, turn back on, go back up, and so on. You can also get a heat lamp with a control dial on it
Where do you put the probes because I see you put the Zilla inside while the jump start is on the outside. I’m getting my first snake this week and I really want him/her to be happy and can you give me some tips (corn snake)
Ideally, the probe should be in the warmest place your animal can access or reach. For example, if you're using a heat mat, you can put it beneath the substrate a bit, so even if the corn snake burrows, it won't be too hot. And if it's a heat lamp, it can be a bit higher than where the animal normally would so it can't reach up and burn itself, and so on
The zilla has 3 outlets. If you are plugging in a heat mat and a heat emmiter (screen top in a cooler house) then where do you put the probe? Do you put it near the emmiter or near the pad? Helppp!
We have a much larger range of thermostats in the UK, the US has only started catching on to thermostats in last last few years or so it seems. I use an Exo Terra thermostat and tons of HabiStat thermostats. We also get MicroClimate and loads of other brands.
i'm in northern europe and ive noticed the same thing lol, usa doesnt seem to have variety or range when it comes to t-stats, europe definitely has a broader market in terms of equipment, especially digital / touch screen thermostats.
Ida Helander If I'm being honest and not trying to start an argument or anything. I believe that Europe is much more advanced in husbandry and modern husbandry than the US is.
Jake's Reptiles I am in america and to be honest I think the range of husbandry tech isn't that big especially when there are brands like arcadia in the uk so yeah the uk os more advanced with this
What is the temperature do you set your thermo at? In other words what would be to hot to burn my snake? I side mounted my heat pad because I don’t have my thermo yet.
GoHerping ok thanks, I just bought an ultramel anery corn snake. I figured it would be that I just wanted to double check. Thank you and awesome content.
Cool video, I hate being spyed on by my phone, yesterday I googled and RU-vidd videos on reptile thermostats, nothing came up. Today this my suggested video lol. Cool video, I think you should have took multiple reading tho, at the start of it powering up, and at the end. That way you can cross reference and see the total temp movement
Take the suction cup and place it into a hot cup of tap water for about a minute. Take it out wipe it off and then stick it on the glass. Truck I've been using for years.
Could the size and location of your enclosure effect the reading from your thermostat? I’m not a reptile enthusiast. However, I’m researching ideas for keeping stray or feral cats warm outside during the winter in the Midwest region. By the way... excellent video! Very informative. Happy Holidays and Thanks for sharing!❄️☃️🐈⬛🐕
The most important part of this test is the accuracy of the temps (not the mounting, not the suction cup which you labored through). And you indicate yourself that you might not have done the measurement accurately (or your temp gun is inaccurate!). This fact alone throws this whole video out the window for usefulness.
The zilla one is annoying since it turns the light on and off once it reaches the dialed temperature. But if I put it at a specific setting it turns the thing into a strobe light
I got a snake today and 2 hours later it passed away cause the previous owner didn't give it proper care for months on end, got another one shorty after and I followed your steps and I'm still just paranoid I'm going to lose this one, any advice?
I’m very late to the video but if anyone knows the answers to my questions, please tel me ;-; Will a heating pad set to 90 degrees Fahrenheit will melt the plastic of my ball pythons tub? I want to use newspaper instead of substrate because my mother thinks that it’ll be too messy and everything and I don’t know if the probes will work without being in a substrate. Are newspapers or paper towels ok as a ball pythons bedding? Should I use an transparent tub or opaque one? I’m sorry I have so many questions but I’m scared that I’ll do something wrong and my bp with get hurt, be miserable, or die too early, especially since I had absolutely nothing I needed for a snake or the knowledge needed to house one properly. My mother doesn’t really care about him or take him seriously as a pet so she won’t spend money on everything he needs. I’m scared he’ll get sick, die, or something like that because I don’t know what all he needs.
So what if I need the terrarium to be 70 degrees but my room temperature is 80 degrees, will the thermostat be able to make the terrarium 70 degrees still?
This young man really has it together.. You should make a career with animals!!! You can easily add more plugs... and connect a mat and a light together....
All you have to do is make up for the difference. If you're short 5 degrees. Then turn up the controller by 5 degrees & there, it settles the difference. 😁
