You can get an adapter with an USB-C TB 3 on one end to DB, HDMI, DVI, or VGA. So honestly I would rather have at least 2 more USB-C TB 3 ports on the dock and get rid of all the other display ports because then I can run at least 3 monitors with any kind of port there is. If the manufacture insists on putting another type of port on the dock then it needs to be DP ports because with DP port you can also get adapters to go to HDMI, DVI, or VGA. Whereas, with an HDMI port you cannot get adapters to go to any other type of port, so you are stuck with only HDMI. On my current dock I'm using an USB-C to DB cable to run one of my monitors... with this cable there is no adapters required. So if you are concerned about having adapters you can just get cables that has the right plug on each end.

We have an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo scanner connected via Firewire to a MacPro. Any opinions/observations about whether this scanner would operate when connected through the new OWC dock to a 2017 MacBook Pro (the new one with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports)?

can you please help me with a sugestion, how i can connect an old audio interface named Scarlett Saffire pro 24. i bought from ebay, but is bus powered with a firewire cable, and my laptop, doesn't have a firewire port. The question is, what's the possibilities to connect it to a computer over the usb c docking station plus aditional adaptor? thank you!

Really not need any FireWire adapters for a long time. As you suggest it will probably need a combination of a couple of adapters.

I'm looking a bit desperately for this dock. This particular one with the Firewire 800 port... for some reason the firewire port disappeared, can't find this exact model anymore. It is - in my knowledge - the last device in date featuring Firewire in a usb-c ecosystem. It's either this or 80€ of Apple dongles... Also if someone wants to start a company with me where we just sell a firewire to usb-c cable I think we can be make millions pretty fast.

I have a alienware laptop..but i has not both thunderbolt 3 and graphics amplifier... For eGPU setup like the asus, it need a thunderbolt jack on laptop. Can i use this for solving that problem.

I don't have Thunderbolt TM 3 PORT on my laptop just a type C port. But I have a HDMI to Thunderbolt Adapter, because I wanted to connect and EXTEND two other monitors to my laptop screen. I realised later that to be able to use the Thunderbolt adapter I need to have a Thunderbolt port on my laptop. My question is: Is there another adapter that would resolve my issue of not having Thunderbolt port on my laptop? Adapter that has a Thunderbolt IN and a Type C OUT. Does this exist?

Just wanted to share this device works well on my MB pro 2017 15 inch. Also charging. Put my RME Fireface 802 on it connected with FW 800 cable works, perfect

Too bad OWC doesn't support nor manufacture ANY docks that support Firewire 800 anymore, since my whole studio depends on Firewire 800...Nor does any of their Thunderbolt 3 docks have any Thunderbolt 2 ports. Its disappointing to say the least. They did and now they don't all within a years time period.

I'm a calDigit user, and I'm very happy with it. I found it very fast too, only missing the SD card slot, but is not a deal breaker. This dock is good if you have only one monitor, or if you have newer TB3 monitors which can be daisy chained, although for my case in which I have two older HP IPS monitors with VGA, DVI, HDMI or DP connectivity, but not TB3, I had to improvise to make it work. At first, I had one monitor connected to the DP port in the CalDigit dock, and the other using a TB3 to mini-DP dongle, but I really wanted to have only one cable connected. Having two cables, and specially an ugly dongle to my 2016MBP looks hideous on my 12 south laptop stand. I tried connecting the dongle to the dock directly, but it displayed a message that it wasn't compatible. So, what I ended up doing, was to connect a basic HP port replicator to the CalDigit, via USB 3.0, and hooking up the 2nd monitor to it. It uses the DisplayLink drivers, which are not ideal, but it works flawlessly. So, I guess this will suffice for the time being. Is not as pretty as I would have liked, but it works. In the future, when IT decides to switch my monitors to TB3 versions, I might get rid of it.

Do you have a solution now? I have a Mac mini (model 2018) with a tb3 to tb2 adapter. The same effect: No picture on my Thunderbolt Display. Oh my older Mac mini from 2013 with tb2-connector the display works fine but with the new one... nothing!! So im thinking about to buy such a dock. but if this dock also doesn't work... that makes no sense then

Looks great, except the OWC branding on the front. Nice design, but the TB2 dock seemed to suffer from EMI from iPhones being too close because the wires weren't shielded appropriately. Reports of this (TB3) dock cycling on and off are out there. This is not good if you are mid backup/save from an external drive. Also, external 4k screens are having connection issues. It seems this is not for large load items and if you want to use large load items, it would follow that you should connect them directly to the computer port instead of overloading this port, which begs the question... is the port worth the money. OWC doesn't seem to have fully tested the load capacity and stability of their dock with many high load items attached. This is engineering 101 and shows more evidence of US companies who do not fully test their products prior to releasing them.

No to both Bob, it is really designed so the main computer input in Thunderbolt 3. However, although not tested, it might work with an adapter.

Did you have any problems where it disconnects everything at random? Especially when you have something like an iPhone charging from the high powered USB port. Reason I ask is because the OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock that I personally own was notorious for doing this. Had to send mine back once and just decided to not use it to charge my phone which stopped the symptoms entirely.

That is not possible. Your only option is a Thunderbolt PCIe card.

People clearly do not understand just how dangerous Firewire is. Having a Firewire port on your computer means that your computer can be full-disk encrypted and locked, and an attacker can walk up, connect a Firewire device, and take over the whole computer with DMA - unlock the computer, insert kernel modules, and dump encryption keys. Thunderbolt is also vulnerable to DMA attacks, but it requires you to approve access to new devices. Firewire has no such protections. Please do not buy this if you have any information stored on your computer. Which means everybody. Look up PCILeech and DMA attacks.

matthew young, that was my point. Thunderbolt was vulnerable to DMA attacks, but recent versions that are correctly configured have security (device approvals and IOMMU guarding). Firewire has no defence mechanisms.

Hey Dave, good review mate thank you! :) I have the 2017 MBP 13 with just the 2 thunderbolt 3 ports...this seems like a good option albeit an expensive one but as the saying goes ‘you get what you pay for’ ... Do you still use this dock? Any issues you’ve ran into?...would you buy this with your own money or choose something different in Q1 2018? ... I’ve been wondering ... when you connect this with Ethernet/peripherals/pop in an sd card, maybe a hdd or 2..even an external DAS raid box...do you have to ‘eject ‘ each item separately when removing on a Mac / OSX?.. or can you eject the dock ...and all connected items to it with 1 click? I hope you get my meaning?? ... If I’ve got 5/10 things connected to it and have to eject each one manually every-time I want to take my laptop out and about it would be a bit of a faff! It's lower wattage but another reviewer says it still charges his 15" MBP while rendering video files and keeps it charged at 100% under heavy work load so it seems like the lower wattage can still charge it while it's doing heavy work but maybe just not as fast as the 85w PSU.

Thank you for your review. I have recently purchased Arrow audio interface that requires thunderbolt 3 unfortunately my windows desktop does not have any thunderbolt input ......i am wondering if a dock is what i need or if i also have to purchase a new computer .

No, the dock will not solve your problem. You need a Thunderbolt 3 PCI-e card.

fojeba: Two different standards. If you haven't, Google Thunderbolt 3 for more info. I too have an UA Arrow and must purchase a new laptop or desktop.

It's about 15cm if I remember correctly.

Yes the cable is really short, to short for many desktop scenarii (including mine). To the worse the TB3 ports are on the backside which means you have to bend the cable around the dock in most cases to the front and you will loose additional 7-8cm of the cable length to your computer. So in the end plan on buying an additional TB3 cable (which are usually rather expensive) and add that to the overall cost.

I just bought the MacBook 12" (mid 2017) and purchased the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock (space grey) and plugged the included cable and received the following alert "Cannot Use Thunderbolt Accessory" - Thunderbolt accessories are not supported on this Mac..... any idea why?

The 12-inch MacBook does not feature a thunderbolt 3 port, it only has a USB-C port which has the same look as the thunderbolt 3 port

You can get USB 2 hubs, but they would have limited functionality with no video/ethernet ports.

it has worked for my Dell XPS 15, with the exception of charging the laptop.. I haven't tested the ethernet or firewire ports yet.. I tried contacting OWC several times regarding the Windows compatible version of the dock they announced at CES this year.. but they refuse to give any information about the release date of this version..
