Double like this. Disproves assertion that one must keep onion bed weed free. This man makes strong argument that soil is the key. Well done. Enjoyed very much. Motivated to enrich my soil.

I am near the Denton area.... We are so wet the tomatoes are doing the backstroke. I messed up this year with my onions. I got long day instead of short day. But, the made really good green onions. I put them in the freeze dryer and made onion powder out of them. We love baked onion and those are just perfect for them - Kudo's to you!

Man oh MAN!!! I can almost TASTE a slice of those big, flat onions on a hamburger! I'm West of you, her in Grand Prairie, TX. so I imagine my weather shouldn't be THAT different than yours. Gonna have to give ONIONS a shot, seeing as you can grow them in shallow containers like you did. Thanks for the "look-see". That is a HUGE crop, too...how long will it take you to EAT all of those?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 года назад
Shoot... No way I can eat all of them. I'll give to family and friends and store the rest. May try freezing them. I heard that worked great. Yep, onions can be raised in shallow containers just fine. The roots don't go deep at all

Very impressive. Have you put up a video recently on composting?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 года назад
No I haven't . The only "composting" I really do is from the litter I shovel out of my chicken pen and the wood chips I have delivered. I guess I need to do a "wood chip to compost" video, right? 😎

The Texas winter killed half my onions but the ones that did make are softball size and larger. I ordered 5 bunches of Texas Legend Onions from Dixon Dale and paid the large price to get them in November and had them planted by Thanksgiving. As you know most stores don’t have onion sets until the end of February or March and if you find them in January your lucky. You have to pay premium price if you want them earlier. I used your old advice and covered them with about an inch or two of composted cow manure. I think getting them in early and the cow manure made the biggest onions I’ve ever grown. They are nice and sweet but I think they could use a little more onion flavor. Next year I will try the same method but with a little sulfur at the end and next season I will grow them from seed and try to save some money. No one in Texas grows onions from seed. I think it must be taboo!
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 года назад
My first time to grow from seed, and like I said in the video, I had a tough time getting the 1015's to germinate. I will probably raise them from sets from now on.

Everything I had success with this year was started by seed. Of course my tomatoes got wiped out by all the rain. Root rot.

The only reason my stuff is still alive is because most of it's in containers. I'm sold on containers for at least part of my veggie production.

The biggest ones I've been able to grow were Walla Walla at 4 - 4 1/2" last winter and I grew them nearly on top of the ground like you said with just the roots in the ground plus a little., I don't remember qwhere I got the idea to do that if I just thought about it on my own or got that info from somewhere else. I'm thinking of trying some of the Texas Super Sweet onions this fall/winter they are supposed to have a grouth potential of 6" and be good and sweet.

The ones I started from seed were started in mid December, I think. A lot of those were planted from “sets” that I bought at the feed store in February.

I'm confused with onions. Can I plant onions in spring? I'm in your area so is it too late to plant onions now, April 2023? I have the Hoss Tools Walla Walla onion seeds.

If you're planting from seed, I think it's too late Try to find some onion "sets" to plant Even with sets... it's getting pretty late :(

I'm surprised they did so well given the cold snap at the end of February. I would have thought they would have been killed off or at least stunted quite a bit. Sure doesn't look like they were affected at all.

I was worried too, but they had about 6" of snow on them when it got real cold. The snow insulated them!!

What was your soil mixture in each container?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 года назад
This was 10+ years ago so I don’t remember exactly. But, it was a mixture of Pete Moss, compost, and potting mix I’m pretty sure. Presently, I am using just putting mix in my container gardens. Hope that helps.

I never grew onions like those before. I wonder about the keeping qualities of those because of their moisture content?
@Gunns57
@Gunns57 3 года назад
As long as they are dry. I tend to dice them up before they turn bad and freeze them.
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 года назад
I've never done that, but I may try freezing them this year ( i have so many). Do they freeze well? Don't get soft and mushy?
@lindag7183
@lindag7183 3 года назад
@@BIGALTX Yes - they do soften after freezing - but they're still great for cooking. I suppose you could also defrost frozen diced onion and sprinkle on salads or hamburgers for the taste, but you won't have any 'crunch'. I've started freezing a lot of veggies in 1/2 to 1 cup quantities for quick stir fries or other veggie combinations. (With just 2 of us, fresh produce often gets bad before we eat it.)

@MichaelSHartman

I wait until the tops fall over, but are still green. I peel the outside skin off, which is easier when green. This leaves the bulbs clean. Years ago I had a large garlic crop, and left the dirt on the bulb. They developed rot, and I lost most of the crop. Since then I have peeled my onion, and garlic bulbs, and had no problems. I tried planting the sets shallowly, and the birds pulled them out. I may put fabric over them next year, if I grow onions. Outside the pandemic, it seems better to buy potatoes, onions, and carrots. If inflation is like the 1970s, I will probably grow them. Did you sow seed indoors, and transplant, or sow directly? When did you sow?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 года назад
Sowed the seed in mid Dec... I think. Seemed like a lot of trouble, when I can buy "sets" for a couple of bucks. Probably won't start from seed again... not sure right now.
