There's also the problem of random loading success/errors. If you took the time to hold the bread in place as you lower the arm you can move that 'too cold on the bottom' heat bias up making for even better results. I have a 4 slice toaster oven that reliably sees 2 slices come out photo-perfect in around 5-6 minutes but 4 slices are a huge compromise of quality and speed adding as much as 2 minutes and requiring very OCD tile-flipping to avoid heat patterns.

Yes, that's always been my complaint with this style of toaster. I grew up in a large family and gave up on toast for this reason. I once worked for a company that provided a toaster that worked on a conveyor belt principle, it did a far better job than any of these toasters. I really liked that you could butter the bread before you put it in and it would emerge as utter perfection.

I'm sure the reason an old stock unit is only 110v and over $100 is because of lack of supply or care about the product, but having watched the videos on this particular toaster it really did have some interesting features that didn't exist before or after, and I find that to be a shame. Variety is the spice of life, and it trickles down into devices made and used over time. I was looking for one about a month ago. I gave up. Everything I saw pretty much agreed with this video. I don’t actually use sliced bread often, I use bengals for sandwich bread. So I ended up getting a panini press. All my bengals get a nice even toast… I wish this video had come out before I started looking. It would have saved me hours of frustration…😁

Great video! For any bagel enthusiasts here hoping to find the best bagel toasting appliance, it's none of these. No countertop toaster can touch the bagel toasting performance of a Breville Smart Oven. Perfectly golden brown on top while still soft, but warm, on the bottom. Exquisite! It also toasts bread very evenly, but the bottom will have rack lines. I got rid of my basic toaster because the toaster oven is so much better at doing that job.

The best toaster I can think of is a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster made from 1948 to 1996. Automatically lowers the bread, uses a thermostat to “see” how toasted the bread is (darkness just sets the thermostat to a higher temperature), then gradually lifts the bread as soon as the thermostat detects the darkness selected. Only thing is, doesn’t work with bagels since the slots are on the smaller side, but most bread, waffles, pop tarts aren’t much of a problem.

For toast lovers: Try putting 2 slices of bread in the same slot (if they fit). You'll get one side toasted and the other side soft and steamy. Makes a great sandwich for biting into the soft outside but a crisp inside, or just a unique jam/nut butter spread you can also fold in half, similar to those old kids cooking toys.

My big issue with toasters over recent years has been lifespan. A toaster might be fantastic out of the box, only to become extremely weak a year or two later with only sporadic use. This is in stark contrast to the old Proctor-Silex toaster we had when I was a kid that lasted literal decades and still had to be kept around the middle of its range to prevent toast from getting burned. It would've been interesting (though possibly wasteful) to see how these toasters held up after a hundred uses

It lasted about a month and just totally stopped working..ofcourse just as the return window closed.. I took it apart last week and absolutely no sign of damage, melting etc.. I'm guessing the main board or the power supply. What's messed up is I have one of those 12$ Walmart toasters from 6 years ago and it still works just fine😅.. more money doesnt mean more better sometimes..

Consider the Breville smart toaster ovens, if you have the space and budget. I have the Joule, but the model down without internet connectivity does similarly. This thing is hands down the best bagel toaster I've ever used, and it's really nicely designed. Get the cutting board for the top, too, so you can set stuff on top without worrying about heat. I just bought a Proctor Silex 4 Slice Toaster with Extra Wide Slots for Bagels, Cool-Touch Walls, Shade Selector, Toast Boost, Auto Shut-off and Cancel Button, Black (24215PS) it cost me $31, but I see it's at $39 now, still a great deal at that, it's all even browning both sides, has the nice slide out crumb tray like the ones you've shown. The auto shut off is so that if a piece of bread gets stuck, it still shuts it off so you don't have a charcoal slice to pull out. The Toast Boost is just that it lifts it higher so it's easier to get the toast out. It's 1300 watts, I was a little wary as my previous Proctor Silex was not great from the beginning, this one I got is great and it was a good buy. Mine browns like the SMEG does, but at a whole lot cheaper. I'm watching your video to see how you test, great video thank you.

Very interesting video! About 10 years ago I went to a big box store and looked inside all the toasters on display, I picked my toaster based on how many windings of heating element were inside the toaster. I bought one with a thin heating element that had almost double the windings of the other toasters on display... sure enough it toasts very evenly on all settings. My father has made toast for his breakfast since he was a kid in the 60s and when he visited he said, wow this toaster works really nice... I felt like I made the right decision then for sure! Loved the video, thanks for putting in this hard work to help us all live a better and happier life! P.S.
