from Tree Limb to Handle
Tools I used in the video
Makita Hand Planer: amzn.to/3kudDLg
Dewalt Die Grinder: amzn.to/41sCHCL
Dewalt 3" cutoff saw: amzn.to/3SxMZO1
Dewalt Jig Saw: amzn.to/41tOKA0
Dewalt Palm sander: amzn.to/3F1bMET
Tung Oil: amzn.to/3ISx0Hg
4pc Pry bar set I replaced the handle on: amzn.to/3IVuboT
After Thoughts about the Video: I lost my voice last week and was procrastinating doing a video. I planned on just doing it silent and by the time I did the video my voice was mostly back, but still decided to give it a go. My original plans was to push the bar all the way through the handle to give a striking surface but it wasn't happening. The little chunk of rebar will take the blows and probably better than striking the hardened bar.

Great video and "Handle-ing!" Was Ginger thinking about attacking that chainsaw? My boy Taz sure would try if you didn't watch him close. He'd attack anything that made noise close to me. He tried to attack the riding mower once and got his nose ran over by the back tire and bloodied. After a quick trip to the vet to be sure nothing was broken, he never tried that machine again, but everything else was still fair game. If I were going to cut up some lumber I'd have to put him in the shop to keep him from attacking the Skil Saw.

Perhaps it is Moe... but wood absorbs water given the opportunity - especially so when it's outside. Buried in snow cannot help I'm sure! What I would keep an eye on is whether or not the handle becomes loose over time as the wood fully dries out. I expect you'll find out by the end of this coming summer. The good news is that I doubt you swing that pry bar like a hammer so it isn't likely to whack anyone if they separate. Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🔧🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum

I miss hearing your thoughts and why you do what you do or about the tools you’re choosing which i’m assuming come from past experience. Until today I had never heard of Tung Oil and have no idea why you chose it over boiled linseed. Did you just grab any old hunk of wood or do you store certain species: Cherry, oak, alder, walnut, etc. I really enjoy watching your channel because hearing your practical take with a focus on using what’s readily available or can be sourced cheaply really aligns with my own views so if you catch a cold/sore throat and can’t speak I’ll get it but I think your channel was built from your own personal version of DIY and you as a person with a likable personality. Leave the Silent films for those who simply want to see restoration as an art and not learn from someone else’s experience.

I lost my voice last week and kept postponing doing a video, so I planned to just do it silent. By the time I did the video my voice was back but it was still nice just to work and not talk out loud to myself. I used Honey Locust; because it's a hardwood and what I had. Tung oil is harder and not yellow like linseed oil. It's a superior product to linseed.

@simonilett998 Год назад
@@sixtyfiveford Yep, mine also takes a little while to start when it hasn't been run for a while, and that is generally at least a year or two each time for me. I always empty the unused fuel and run it dry before storage, but that is the best practice, and why she takes a while on each re-awakening. I've never had to clean or rebuild the carb in over 10 years I've owned it, which would be unheard of with new equipment, however we also don't have to contend with ethanol in fuel, but it is available in 10% and maybe 15% for automotive use if required. One issue I did experience with the 015 when my sister borrowed it years ago (and almost it's demise) was the screws that retain the throttle butterfly came loose, and one ended up getting sucked down into the lower crankcase😣 Luckily my sis stopped using it when it would no longer rev up, and thankfully no damage to the engine internals, just an engine strip down to inspect and retrieve the mangled up screw, found a suitable replacement screw, reassembled, and loctite + peened the threads of the throttle butterfly screws so that will never happen again🤣👍🇦🇺

I probably would have glued up that first wood handle. I don't want to waste the time and material invested. How much time do you have invested? I need to do this for a miter saw, a wind storm knocked it over and busted the handle.

It took probably an hour and a half total. I did the other 3 in the set(so they match) today and it took an hour total for all 3 of those.

The dog said don't use bark. Here's a leaf. It's smoother.

I was hoping that you were going to use the Drill as a Lathe... Wouldn't "surface burning" the handle, followed with a light sanding, then applying a sealer (shalack or polyurethane) after HARDEN the wood? Just for laughs, how about building a Doghouse using Automotive Body Panels (and a bed inside as well)!.

Generally tool handles you never want a clear coat as it is very uncomfortable to use the tool. Cheap axes, shovels, etc will come with a clear coat new and die hard guys always strip it off and oil the wood instead. I'm not positive on the hardening of wood via flame.

👏 Another great video. I do have a question. Is there a reason for the short piece of rebar? I've never made a handle & would assume to just have the end of the handle be flush with end of pry bar but 🤷‍♂️. I'm thinking what you did with grinder at end of the bar was to catch/grip the rebar but again 🤷‍♂️. Thanks

I just googled it and do recall seeing those side graphics on Rangers back in the 90's. Not sure if they only did those on the STX. My buddy had the next generation of that truck the Splash.
