I think it’s super cool that the commentators are able to just patch into the team radio and just talk to the drivers you don’t really see that anymore nowadays
Heel toe rev matching downshifting while flying down the Esses AND passing a car before the elbow all while calmly telling the comentators about his car and joking about bringing out a yellow.... The greatest racing moment I've ever seen.
This makes me a little sad, when compared to V8 Supercars today. I miss the Production based cars and the engineering of individual teams Perkins team was outstanding
1993 was the last 308 to race in the top teams and yes Perkins was the winner!! So after 93 they dropped the Group A rules and no longer ran production cars, and banned the 308
Actually they reduced the 308 to about 305 because 4995 cc from memory. The 308 was slight above 5 litres. I dont remember what year probably 85. Larry made quite a passionate speech about how good the basic engine was when he won Bathurst in 1993. Remember it was the L34 engine block with 4 bolt main bearings.
@@broadytaylor9493 I remember being involved with many others building the Tirana ( its an o I know , the spell checker is overriding me). The VN’s & VP bodies were initially built on line but to much automatic equipment had to be turned off so they just gave teams a pile of bits to build there own cars from about 93.
This really was a race of two halves: the incredible comeback of the Castrol Perkins Engineering team, which was a real testament to Larry Perkins, his engineering skill and race driver know how, plus the undeniable talent of Russell Ingall. The other half: the heartbreak of Glenn Seton Racing, will Glenn never being able to win Bathurst in his long and storied career. If there ever was a driver who deserved to win Bathurst, it was surely Glenn. If there was a man who was able to etch his name into the Bathurst legend, it was Larry.
"When you get back here I'm going to give you the biggest kiss" Larry - "I'd prefer to get one from your girlfriend" From last to 1st, I think you gotta give the man what he wants
Despite any consideration for how the woman referred to as Russell's girlfriend might feel about being joked about as a thing, a possession. Ye Na It's ok she's hot.
@@howarduno1652 He said he'd "prefer". There's no objectification implied. Also the absurdity of this is why it's a funny joke. So chill out bruz, no one needs you to police morality on RU-vid
@@snowman01 morality pig? simply stating how it could be perceived. For instance, snowman could imply; you're cool, or frigid, or tiny in a humiliating way, or could be advertising that you're a coke dealer, or yu just can't think of an interesting name, you know it's all about perception.
Larry was running a Holden V8 made in Melbourne, the rest of the Holdens were running chev engines, they banned the Holden V8 as an unfair advantage after this!
The greatest comeback in Australian Touring car racing history..it will never be repeated.. for the car to stand up to the incredible full-on driving attack that was required and not fail mechanically is a testament to Larry's incredible engineering skill as well as his driving skills.
Lowndes nearly matched it when he came 2nd to Tander after all the stacking, but he couldn't make the pass. That was a monster comeback, but just short. Mostert and Morris was great too.
What actually gets me is that, on the last lap of a race like that, he can just have a casual chat without any mistakes at full race pace. Racing drivers are a different breed.
Can't find the video online or even remember the year but wish I could find the footage of Larry, full-tilt on Conrod... when his crew got on the radio and asked 'Pit this lap Larry'? Larry replies 'Yes, I'll pit'. So Larry pulls up in his pit bay and due to a 'miscommunication' the crew are all sitting on tyres and tool boxes etc inside the garage. As they leap up in surprise and scramble to the car to do the pitstop Larry yells into the radio, live on national TV, 'What part of YES I'LL PIT don't you fu*k*ng understand'?
I loved Larry Perkins. I took my boy to Sandown and all the stars were in the shed. He was out and about and he signed my boys poster. A great Aussie and a great racer. I am a Ford fan but I have a shitload of respect for the great man.
Hey, I love the in race interviews with drivers in theory. But my God I can't see how the drivers aren't thrown off by it as they are shooting for the victory. During a pacecar yes. Under green, nope. Even more props to Perkins for not only passing everyone, but also having the interview mid race
I remember that race well, What a top bloke Larry is, brilliant mechanic engineer, brilliant driver and one of the best blokes you could meet. I really miss those days of real racing.
Love how Larry Perkins treats 280km/h like it's 50km/h on a warm Sunday evening; window down, elbow resting on the door. All that's missing is some Vaporwave and a sunset.
Hard to believe the size of the crowd back then relative to today. Growing up with a Holden mechanic father Bathurst was a big annual event for us - very Australian and the average Aussie could relate to the cars battling it out. Not many of us can relate to the exotics that race around these days, bristling with tech (ie. less about the driver) and the results usually heavily weighted towards the big bucks. Isn't progress wonderful?? :-|
Neil Hodgson did the same thing in superbike, late 90's or early 00's iirc. But he was riding so hard that when he eventually made it from last to first, he stayed in the zone and got a 30 second lead between him and the guy in second place 😵💫😄 It was phenomenal. I'd say that was the #1 moment for me, this is a close second!
I took my two sons to see that race...we parked ourselves at Murray's corner and I told my bored six year old to follow Larry's car. He's now a car nut!
@@r3ap3r_snake both I reckon, as much as I love that win and still think its the best , ya gotta feel for Seton . He was nearly unbeatable that year if my memory is still intact
Remember watching it, i'm a Ford guy, but was so happy for LP, not many fairy tale endings, this was one, Lowndes the year he won when Brock passed away was another one.
Great upload! I went to Bathurst from 1994 to 1998, I witnessed the changeover from the production based classes to the birth of the V8 Supercars. But what a crock of shit it has turned into now, funny how anytime the yanks get involved there seems to be some form of cheating that comes with them. But This Race, was by far the best race I have ever attended anywhere bar none! Old Larry could really build and pedal those Castrol cars!
What an awesome trip down memory lane. Thanks for uploading. With the demise of Aussie made Fords and Holdens, I wonder if we might be lucky enough to have touring car racing back one day. For whatever reason, I've never been able to get into the V8 Supercars, so much parity its practically a 1 make series. I stopped caring who won, then at some point just stopped watching. Anyway, I digress.. thanks again for the blast from the past :)
I'm the same. Pure space frame built, dedicated track cars don't excite me at all. Part of the excitement was ordinary engineering thinkers, fabricators and mechanics coming up with solutions within the constraints of a production car. I would see the road-going version of those cars on my way to school and it was exciting to learn and think about how these teams turned ordinary cars into racing cars. Today's sport doesn't come close.
Can't tell you how many times, through different youtubers, I've watched this. But It still makes me smile from ear to ear. Almost as good as seeing it live that year. No real words. Adjectives just are not worthy!
I live on the other side of the world, I was 2 when this happened. This is one of the races that started my passion for motorsport when I saw it on a video when I was old enough to understand what was going on. Amazing.
Larry has his drivers window down as well, I would be surprised if having one window down on the passenger side would affect the drag coefficient that much
I have tears and goose pumps watching this amazing short race video. Real true drivers with no power steering, no traction control, no stability control and chatting so calmly while driving in the mid 200KPH. AMAZING. I wish they showed this kind of racing to todays upcoming drivers to show REAL driving.
I think from memory this was also the last Australian engined car to win Bathurst. All the other commodores had gone to the chev 5L race engine by then but Larry was still running the Holden 5L. If I am right it is a truly collectable car for many reasons.
What a total legend Perkins was, gotta love the casual chat over the radio and the arm on the window ledge whilst following the pace car. Also tought to see Seton loose that win. Amazing racing and an amazing track.
Great advertisement for Perkins’ own engines & Castrol oil when you compare how clean the back of his VR was at the end of the race with how filthy the back of the Coca Cola car was at only 130 laps.
For me, and I might be wrong, probably am wrong, but, for me, this is the best of racing. This was when the balance between driver and car tech' was balanced, and racing was tight, talent was everything.
In my humble opinion there is no other team in Australia that could have pulled off a win under those circumstances, even more extraordinary considering it was all engineered in house by Larry, just amazing.
I Was lucky to be working for Castrol in those days and all in the years that I have been to Bathurst. I have never seen a Better Race. Well done Larry. Les Dearing
If there was i place i would like to have been back in the day, it would have been here on the hill of mount panorama 1995 to see Larry Perkins do something special Larry Perkins king of the hill on this day.
It USED to be about Aussie made Cars , gone , But , I am 59 Years old now , it about The people now , Brocky Gone , My dad died 2 Years today , I been ok About it untill , I heard ALAN talk to LARRY , the respect between them Just not words , it 25 years since then LARRY called him a mate , well what A good mate he was , ALAN is in the Twilight years of his life , Alan had some Family problems , that LARRY stepped In and helped out in , did not blow his Trumpet , Just a mate helping out new Alan wishes , sorry LARRY your one good Bloke , dam you my eyes are watering up , Made me think of the love for my dad All the best Mark
I’m a rusted on Ford fan, and gutted Seaton never achieved a deserved win, but even back then - that win by Perkins was something very special . Bloody awesome - so fucking Aussie
The crowd reaction after the pass on Seton is spine tingling stuff. Really feel for Glenn and his team though. It was a big effort and a real engineering feat back in those days. These cars couldn't be driven flat stick for 6 hours like today.
One of my favorite drivers, among various others including Jim Richards and George Fury, and of course Brocky. Bring back the days of Touring cars that don't focus on just 2 models of Ford and Holden, and now just from the US.
Larry's engine was dyno tested last year. 535hp at 8750rpm. He said it was good for 9000 rpm all day long. The Fords were at risk at 8000. That was the difference.
