The ER supplies nothing! It unfortunately is not their job. Fix you up and get you out. I might suggest for some supplies any of the major suppliers, B. Braun, Coloplast, Bard, Cathcare. I don't believe Walgreens will have what you need. Amazon used to have some items but really the best best is one of the supplies. Also one that does not require a prescription makes ordering easy.

Awwww Jan, thank you for the kind words. All I wanted to do when I started these videos was help and there was nothing out there. I had to go it alone and figure it out by myself. God bless my doctor and the nurses but they were at a loss as to how to live daily with that archaic device. My, I ask, as a home health expert, how many people do you see that have to use a urinary catheter to void urine? What is the age? Are you seeing more? What is the diagnosis? Is it the majority of your patients and is it mostly for incontinence due to age? How has it affected their physical mobility and their mental state? I'm doing research and have developed a catheter that allows more range of motion so that activities of daily living can be achieved which improves the quality of life. I am also working to be an advocate for prostate screening to be lowered as more and more men are diagnosed with BPH at a younger age than the first recommended screening. I'd like to be able for men to get comprehensive care instead of reactive. Sorry to blab on but I am passionate about this. Hi Wayne, I'm really happy the hanger trick worked for you. I had an older gentleman write me to say he used his walking cane. He just slid it in between the mattress and left some hanging out and voila! Necessity is the mother of invention. Hey do me a favor when you speak with your urologist and tell him about this channel that offers practical information (not medical advice) on living with a catheter. Probably like most of the urologists out there he did not provide any information beyond medical.....which of course is incredibly important.....but from the hundreds of thousands of people who have watched the videos and thanked me for making them, something as simple as hygiene, sitting, sleeping is not covered by the medical professional. @@maletenance So Tony, I told my urologist about the hanger method and where I got the idea from. The response was, "What a great idea--I am going to remember that to help others." Again, thanks for sharing. I have another surgery coming up on Tuesday where I will need a temporary catheter again. My hangers are ready! 😁

@@maletenance I have a question because you referenced the "sandy sediment" because I experience the lumen clogging and I even use a special silastic foley catheter which is crazy expensive but does not clog as often.I drink water and still have this issue I am told it is because I have had a catheter for so many years. I was just wondering if you know any ways I can prevent this issue? I see a urologist but it is 2 times a year for 5 min and I sometimes learn more for peers than actual Doctors or nurses

I use a small bathroom trash can and fits perfectly ,it took a bit to find the right size but solved my problem and have been using it going on 6 years,

Whatever gets you some comfort. I'm not sure if I was supposed to do it or not but I sometimes I laid the overnight bag at the foot of the bed. Nothing happened thank God. Most of the time I did the coat hanger trick.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a radical prostatectomy (robotic assisted, laparoscopic) last week. Gleason score is only 6, so we are hopeful!

He is only 56, and the diagnosis was made as a result of a yearly routine screening. His DRE was normal and PSA was within range, but his PSA velocity was high, which was the red flag. I always thought that this was something much older men experienced but it is touching men in their prime which is devastating. I would like to see the first screening be 45yrs, as many of the issues surrounding the prostate can be cured if detected early. Again thank you for sharing and I appreciate your offer to help. Right now I am trying to figure out how the channel can reach more people who find themselves lost with a urinary catheter. I will be speaking with my urologist next month, on how to become a peer support person based on my first-hand experience and the thousands of people that have benefited from my videos. The pattern throughout, is people say they found themselves with little to no information on how to live with a catheter. It was just put in and they were sent home, which adds another level of stress. That time between the first insertion and finding my videos is painful, emotionally and mentally exhausting, scary, and unnecessary. Receiving a life-altering diagnosis is really really hard on not only the patient, who has to process it all but difficult for their loved ones who become caregivers. There needs to be intermediary support and information, while on the road to recovery. Hang in there and sending you a BIG virtual hug!

Thats a great system. I wish the medical professionals would provide some information than nothing. So many people that visit the site say they were given no information at all and it would truly benefit the user. I'm working on proposing to my urologist to suggest to his patients to watch the videos as a tool to supplement his work. Just got to figure out how as I am not a doctor. I don't have all the answers but some are better than nothing and if the end result is great health, physically, mentally and emotionally, then it's good for everyone. Hi Terrie, I'm sorry to read you're having a rough go with your catheter. It is a big pain in the crotch, to say the least. In all the years I have been doing the channel, I have never heard of the bag collapsing, least of all creating a vacuum. I never experienced that. Might I suggest you join the Facebook Catheter Support group at facebook.com/groups/1921771728037940/ They are an incredible group of people worldwide who share what they know. There you will probably find someone who has experienced this phenomenon once you ask the question. If there is anything else I can help with please don't hesitate to ask. Hang in there. The larger bag should allow everyone to sleep a whole night. Not sure if this would be an option if nightly medication is needed but I cut off drinking anything a couple of hours before bedtime which helped.

@@maletenance Much appreciated advice. He is however a diabetic. So we still allow him to drink lots of water even at night. I appreciated the video about the importance of being healthy not just for vanity. Bad health complicates everything, it is not as simple as the way someone looks.

Hi Ralph, Necessity is the mother of invention when it came to hanging the night bag. Some people shared their tricks....a cane, a tennis racket.....people are pretty creative. As for how I cleaned the night bag....just warm water hang to dry. I also used gloves and made sure the bag tips/openings did not touch any surfaces. I was fortunate to have all my supplies provided by my urologist. So basically you wash the one you are not using, while using the other and rotate. I think after a month I would throw them away. As for bacteria problems....if you get away without having a CAUTI while cathing, you're lucky. Even with all the proper precautions and hygiene I still got one during my three plus months of being a catheter user. By the way, if you don't mind me asking - How did you come to using a catheter, what was your diagnosis? Cheers, and wishing you great health. Tony

I would leave the leg bag on and drain it throughout the day and usually not remove it until I was preparing to go to bed. At night I would switch over to the night bag. I hope that helps. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Cheers Tony

@Patrick-uf1cq There are no silly questions. It's a whole new world you're trying to navigate so ask as much as you need. As for the night set up - I'm not sure what system you have but they all work kinda the same. You remove the day bag from the catheter and use a larger urinary bag that usually comes with a longer tube attached which allows you to place it on the floor/nightstand/hooked to the bed. Whatever way you choose make sure the bag sits well below your hip so urine does not back up into the bladder. Unless of course, they gave you no supplies....which I wouldn't''t be surprised. @@maletenance I have had indwelling 3 times for 4 /5 nights and have never been given a night bag. Basically slept with day bag leg supported off the bed with a foot stool and set my alarm for every 1.5 to 2 hrs. Zero instruction on how to manage sleeping like this even though the nurses and my doctor are very nice to deal with and I am not talking ER interventions. Absolutely crazy all this lack of info and guidance given the stack of research on CAUTIs and extra burden on the health care system as the result of improper use, hygiene etc.

@Patrick-uf1cq I knew it.....no night bag, no supplies! That sucks!!! I mean you got pretty creative but thats no way to live getting up every coupla hours. All they had to do was give you a night bag or tell you that these are the supplies needed while using an indwelling catheter, which would have made all the difference in the world, physically, mentally and emotionally. Urghhhhh! I could not agree with you more on all your points......it's actually really unfair the lack of guidance and support given. That is the common thread we all have - no practical information is ever given. It's the reason I stated making the videos and I'm really proud and humbled it helps so many people.

Hi Jeff, I'm not sure what you mean by the hose? Are you referring to the catheter or the longer tube with the larger nighttime urine bag? I don't want to give you the wrong information. @@maletenance I’m referring to the longer tube. I have been running hot water thru it to keep the flow but all of a sudden the hose is not emptying in the bag. I’m really tired of investing in hoses and bags.

Hi Ricardo, I was actually more careful about the tip of the catheter and the part of the urine bag that joins the catheter. You have to take extra care with hygiene and wash your hands every time you handle any parts of the catheter and your privates. Even with all that, I got a urine infection. I think it kinda goes with the territory of having a catheter.

Hi Aleksandra, I am so happy you found the video/s helpful and my hat is off to you for being a great and concerned caregiver to your husband, For the larger bag, I did a video about how to hide it and I suggested loose-fitting pants, preferably jogging pants. Black is best to hide any possible leaks. The looser leg will hide the bulk of the bag and it will be much more comfortable. I did not wear a pair of jeans for months. I also placed the leg bag a little more toward the inside of my leg so it wouldn't stick out. It did not change the functionality of the catheter and when the bag was filled it was more discreet, especially if I was in a place where I could not dispose of it readily. Do check in with your guy and see how he's going mentally and emotionally. It was, for me at least, mental gymnastics not to feel sorry for myself or feel like I was broken or less of a man. That at times was as difficult and painful as having the catheter. I wish you and your husband great health. Cheers Tony ps. @@maletenance it is about hiding the smaller LEG bag, which he used to wear and he USED TO feel less depressed with it. Now he has the overnight bag all the time which is very visible. Because of painful bladder spasms he wants to do TURP as he thinks he will be back to normal after it as his prostate is enlarged. Anyway-YOUR TRICK WORKED GREAT LAST NIGHT. Thanks. Also, you are the only one who knows how hard it really is.

btw i definitely do not see him less a man but i see him as a man reacting to challenge and i love when he is POSITIV AND STRONG - he often is, but not always

As for the only one that knows how hard it is, I don't think I am but I'm one of the only people that will talk about it and share how it was. It's definitely not an easy subject due to geography and guys don't sit around discussing their health issues with each other over a beer. If you'd like I am happy to talk to you or him about getting his mind right and doing all the mental gymnastics needed to get through this....I've been there. I've spoken with several people and it's been a really positive outcome. For me, it felt at times like when someone dies and people no matter how kind, can't help how difficult the situation is. It's tough for you too. I have spoken with caregivers and they have a hard time with loved ones who are going through a health crisis as it affects them too. Unfortunately, you can only sympathize and not empathize. My uncle finds self catheterization impossible to do as it is extremely painful apparently and he can’t imagine anyone being able to do it so he refused to let go of the Foley now for five months now - any tips on that to share please?

@@webversation the self foley, is lubricated very well, also, what helps is numbing the penis first. He can ask for some numbing gel, which can be inserted first, wait 5 minutes then do the self foley. I understand many men do it once at night, then in the morning. He can also ask a friend to help him, or a visiting home nurse can help as well. I couldn't sleep with the attached foley so I went with the self foley. Just had to do it 3 times before I got back to a normal stream on my own.

There is so much information that is not provided including different-sized bags. You can't imagine all the people who get a catheter and are discharged with no info on how to live with the damn thing and no supplies.
