Similar idea used for long(er)-term drywall mud storage--level the surface to reduce peaks and valleys/surface area. But you want to clean off the sides of the bucket with a knife, then brush and water. And make sure it stays cool. It'll last months in a cool environment. For short-term storage (1-5 days or so), leave 1/2" of water on top of the mud. Then, dump it off when you open it.

Makes sense, use water for water based, and asphalt oil for asphalt based.

Cover it with cling film stop making things so complex we been building houses in uk for 1400 years

Excellent, been doing this for 45 years, wd-40 works too. Primer is best though, by far. Though a little wasteful, painter's plastic works excellent, a little messy, but it works, just waste a few tablespoons of mastic. Painter's lastic works for polyurethane, silicone and other rubber and bituminous products.

Oh, that is a great idea. I need to try the painters plastic on silicone. That is even more important than mastic, silicone is $$$

The easiest and cheapest way is to add mineral spirits. Pour a little mineral spirits in your bucket to preserve the mastic, Also try adding a half a cup or so in your bucket then just mix it in an inch or so, then use it to spread like butter over your hard to seal areas. It will help penetrate tough areas that you would otherwise need a lot of primer for. You can also make your own primer- just mix mineral spirits with a little mastic and brush on. The mineral spirits are the only solvent that will mix with mastic. Mastic is made from mineral spirits. Hope this helps ye'all. I learned this from one of the APOC reps here in California. I've been using this method for over 15 years now. Works Awesome!
