I love fiddling with dongles. The insertion is smooth and goes in both ways. The adapters can be moved into many different positions. They have extra power and more bandwidth girth for stronger devices and data flow.

But the thing is, it takes just such a long time to implement. I'd appretiate if every single manufacturer just jumped to USB-C, I had to buy some cables and that's it. No stupid dongles etc.

Elijah The Beast it needs to be be like this. Apple changing this quick is making manufacturers catch up as Apple sells pretty well. By the end of the year you'll see a lot more Thunferbolt / USB c only computers.

Thankfully I don't have to worry about this yet with my Lenovo Chromebook that has 2 USB 3.0 type A ports, 1 USB 2.0 Type A port, a real gigabit Ethernet jack, onboard VGA, full size HDMI 1.4a port, a full size SD card reader a 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron 1007U that has 2 multithreads, 8GB 1600MHZ DDR3L ram, and a 250GB WD Blue HDD for extra storage all in an 11.6 in frame. Also another bonus I still have the handy trackpoint on my keyboard that I wish Lenovo would bring back on newer models.

Except Apple killed all the ports in a single swipe. Razer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc they mostly keep supporting USB type-A, they only added type-C, didn't replace it.

A, Apple was the first one to kill all other ports but a 3.5mm jack on laptops, and there is no alternative options in the MAC ecosystem, Apple is the only one that make MacOS laptops. But PC you always have options to buy the ones that are not only type c. B, it's not like there is any thing he can do to stop that stupidity, so all he can do as a tech RU-vidr is to test the dongles and give you advise, as he said at the beginning of this video.

The reason it was (keyword WAS) stupid (and it kinda still is going to be for a few years) is because making a laptop with only USB-C and none of the established USB ports pretty much "locks out" most people's external drives and devices unless they carry those annoying dongles. On the PC side though, unless you get an ultrabook, you're not forced to use one of these. You'll see one of these ports, but you'll still have 2 to 4 USB type A ports. Regardless of opinions, even if I'm iffy on the non-thunderbolt type C (wish my Scar II actually came with that so I would have several HDDs in a single dongle instead of taking all my slots), we might have to consider the options here as this is a huge upgrade over the USB 3.1 provided the USB C port on the laptop and dongle are using the Thunderbolt 3 protocol, and takes up less space on the I/O (which in turn can mean future desktop mobos with 6-8 usb ports instead of 4-6 that can have multiple drives being used in the same port. This will be a godsend for my dad, who prefers external drives over internal due to working both on desktop and laptop.

Hyperdrive is releasing a perfect hub for MacBook Pro. A thunderbolt 3 port, one 3.1 type c port. Three 3.0 type a ports. One SD card reader. Specs look great on paper. Not sure how it performs.

Dongles are just a temporary solution to a temporary problem. The hope is, in the future, most devices will support USB Type C. Everything from your phone, to your monitor, to your mouse can all use the same port to charge, transfer files, view video, etc.

I'd hate if I needed a dongle even to connect a USB drive (looking at you MacBook and MacBook Pro), but having the OPTION to connect all those ports through a single connector is also great. Like, I use Ethernet once every three months, I barely use it. Now, not having USB-A, that'd be idiotic.

from what I understood of the reason the SSD was killed, it was a partition issue. Deleting the partition and making a new one should fix it

This is over a year old. It's 2018 now, I just bought a new laptop and.. Still don't need any adapters because apart from the one Type-C the brand new laptop still has a full-size ethernet, multiple "old" USB ports, a mic/headphone 2-in-1 3.5mm jack and a full size DP. turns out that space on the side of the device can be used for adaptors! (did I mention that matte display which somehow was pronounced 10 years ago is way better when actually using the laptop outside where glossy displays show everything but the actual image due to their reflective nature?)

I've had the hootoo hub for awhile now and it works pretty well. Never tried plugging in two SSDs to test transfer though. I will say it's a nice dongle especially for those Apple people who miss just have to have a glowing logo so much. (the hootoo logo glows). But as Linus said the juiced one is definitely the all around best. I'd recommend the hootoo if you're not rocking that two SSDs and it doesn't have ethernet either. The price on the hootoo was much cheaper before too at $62.99. Don't know why it went up.

Really good video Linus, the only thing the video was missing was the USB-C charging passthrough. I looked at some reviews on Amazon for the Aukey (HDMI version) and some people said that they were not getting as much power from the USB-C passthrough so if you could test that next time that would be great thanks!

What's wrong with everyone wanting these thinner lighter laptops that need a ton of adapters and dongles to do what you want ? I'd rather have a laptop the weighs 10 pounds has the power and more I/Os than I'll ever use but it's all in one piece and doesn't get blown off my desk or lap because someone sneezes across the room. Or am I just so used to my Tank of an Alienware that I'm missing something ?

dukedurell You misunderstand. It's not what people want, it's what a bunch of big corporations decide to compete on and market. Most of them are jumping on a bandwagon. Sometimes a small company comes along and makes a splash with something the big ones abandoned a few years earlier because of their short attention span, like GPD's pocket sized computers that do have some I/O.

My laptop doesn't have USB-C charging and I have a 3 standard USB ports and HDMI so for me, all I wanted from my dongle was Ethernet and VGA. I ended up going for the "Cable Matters USB-C to HDMI / VGA / Ethernet / USB Multiport Adapter" and haven't had a problem. The other option (which I couldn't find the USB-C variant of at the time of purchasing) is the Dell version of this which has a much sleaker form factor with the cable wrapping around the adapter. I haven't yet tested the network performance of the ethernet with my CableMatters but if I remember I will and I will edit this post. That's two more options to look at though particularly if like me you want the most variety of ports. Not buy laptops that don't have the ports we need, and laptop manufacturers will then add ports, because otherwise they go out of business. A dongle is a tiny, one use thing you plug into any USB port, such as a wireless dongle or a bluetooth dongle. What you're actually talking about are USB C adapters. Some of us have already been doing these things with USB 2.0 and 3.0. I modify my desktops to pretty much run anything that's under 12v

Hey, i got my self a MOKiN "passthrough" hoping to charge my razer blade at home using it as a docking but it doesnt charge the laptop, in fact, it doesnt work at all if i plug the razer power to it BUT if i unplug the power the wireless mouse and pendrive works well. The only reason tomy comment is that you coukd go to any shop to try almost any computer BUT when it comes to peripherials, well you just cant or 90% of the time they will not let you... Another HUGE point in all this, i think using a data port for power is extremely stupid without the option to separate the charging devise from the peripheral you wanna use, this to me is like when phone lines were operated by women by pluging and unpliging cables to connect you, so well done by bringing the wonderful speeds and external gpus and whatever else you could do with usb-c or thunderbolt until you run out battery...

I appreciate this video however there was one angle I really needed to see that you didn't do. Most of us are stuck on these computers with fast but small (at least compared to hd's) ssds. That means we will be using the card readers to likely transfer media to an external ssd where the work on video editing will occur. I would have appreciated it if you had shown the hubs trying to transfer directly from their card readers to an attached external ssd all through the same hub.

Great video! This kind of adapter is really convenient to solve the problem of conversion. Not long ago I bought a renhotecic brand adapter to convert video, it works very well and is very convenient. You can prepare one if you need it.

Im a huge fan of this channel, and I'm also a Mac user. The point of USB-C and thunderbolt 3 isn't dongles, it's having a port that works for everything. I don't understand the resentment towards something that is inherently a good thing, and a step forward. When I got my MacBook Pro, I didn't buy dongles for it, I bought drive enclosures that had either USB-C or Thunderbolt ports. I seriously cannot understand why Linus isn't ecstatic about this.

What's really interesting though is that the Aukey, that supposedly caters to business users, does have the projector (yey!) VGA port *BUT* lacks Ethernet. All the companies I 've worked for as an software engineer along with all my customers rely exclusively on Ethernet AND use VGA projectors.

A good usb c dongle can be pretty usefull. Get a big one with power in, usb ports, hdmi, usb c power and ethernet, plug in peripherals, ethernet, Monitor, external Storage, Power brick etc. Then you can just come along with your new thunderbolt 3/ usb c laptop and plug in a single usb c cable --> instant Desktop with a second screen.

This definitely needs an update and in particular a single USB-C [IN] from PC/MAC that supports/drives [OUT] at least x3 USB-C 1080p HD monitors, which would also as a bonus give touchscreen capable monitors this functionality without having to run a separate USB connection (e.g. HDMI + USB). you missed one really important, that was really hard for me to find, it is USB-c thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 - I'm using this one with a Thunderbolt 1 RAID, and a Blackmagic Thunderbolt video card in Daisy Chain. -- StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt Adapter

Or, you know, expensive laptops could just have this all built in. Crazy concept, right? Maybe one day we won't need the dongles and other ports, but that won't be for a very long time. Ethernet cables are here to stay for a long ass time and I don't see TVs switching from HDMI any time soon.
