The eighties were full of incredible action movies, but while a lot of them are considered classics now, some of the best movies (you never saw) routinely get underrated, so here on JoBlo we're celebrating Thanksgiving weekend with three more of the best - RUNNING SCARED (1986), REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS (1985) and BEST OF THE BEST (1989).
RUNNING SCARED 1986 - In this buddy-cop action movie, Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines play two Chicago cop who are eager to retire to the Florida Keys, but have to bust a notorious drug dealer (Jimmy Smits) first. Directed by Peter Hyams.
REMO WILLIAMS THE ADVENTURE BEGINS 1985 - Fred Ward stars in the big screen adaptation of Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir's pulp "The Destroyer" series. Co-starring Joel Grey as Remo's Asian (!) mentor. Directed by James Bond alum Guy Hamilton, with an awesome score by Craig Safan.
BEST OF THE BEST 1989: Eric Roberts and Philip Rhee co-star with the less obvious casting of James Earl Jones and Christopher Penn in this martial arts movie classic.

Roger that Birddog. As a kid I couldn't get enough of the scene inside the EB-66C. So many knobs, switches and radar screens! I didn't even know what the air force guys were doing but it looked real technical and serious and I'm sold. ha ha ha. I later understood they were doing electronic counter measures and jamming SAMs.

I really liked Remo Williams, when you think of it, they did Bullet time before it was popularised by The Matrix. Fred Ward made a pretty decent action hero and his chemistry with Joel Grey Korean Sinaju master Chun is really infectious. Too bad it didn't get any sequels, being released in 1985 up against Commando, Rambo First Blood Part 2, Rocky 4, Back to the Future it didn't have a chance against these box office juggernauts.

I had actually never heard of Remo Williams until a couple of years ago when the movie was "free to watch" on RU-vid. I remember really enjoying it, and after finding out that there were literally over 100 pulp novels, I was upset to find out that there were never any more movies made. I liked it enough that I bought and read the first pulp and afterwards I bought the second one, though I have not gotten around to reading the second one yet.

You know what I love about 80s films? Or the 80s in general? People didn't whine about racism or shit being "problematic" by current years standards. I mean, there's multiplr reasons why they never cast a legit Korean in the role. The most likely reason being they probably couldn't get one. The film itself looked like it was made on a shoe string budget and they ran out before finishing it. Which explains why the villain was generic. And I'd guess their biggest expense was Fred Ward and all the stunt men. They were probably lucky to get who they got who, understandably, never played an asian. And the facial special effects they got. Like, for fucks sake children, it was the 80s. Internet didn't exist back then. The west was still in the process of building relations with eastern nations. And the high demand for martial arts films was the catalyst for bridging the cultural divide. So yeah, expect films of that era to be rough around the edges. Seriously, I'm an Australian. Do you think I whinge about Americans cast as Aussies who can't get the damn accent right? No. You just laugh at it for what it is and move on.
@NPNN-xt4ot
@NPNN-xt4ot 2 года назад
That's what I was thinking too. Maybe the casting department just couldn't get Asian actors with all those martial arts movies going at that time. It's just a human logistics problem. High demand vs. low supply.
@kri249
@kri249 2 года назад
@@NPNN-xt4ot yeah, particularly fit elderly asian men in America with acting and martial arts experience. There are only a couple I could name and they've done movies with bigger budgets than this.
@aaronleverton4221
@aaronleverton4221 2 года назад
@@kri249 In the '80s? There were a ton of Chinese-descended actors doing low-budget stuff. Heck, you think George Takei was outside their budget? Hell, the director probably knew Burt Kwuok personally. Best of the Best was four years later and it had no problem finding Asian actors to play the South Koreans.
@kri249
@kri249 2 года назад
@@aaronleverton4221 Takei was still doing Star trek films around then. It's not uncommon for actors to knock back movies roles for multiple reasons. The most common being they had better offers, prior commitments, or they read the script and thought it was shit. It could very well be the case that no asian actor wanted a bar of this film. Possibly due to them either not being Korean or the idea of a fake martial arts being offensive. Hell the could even have a guy who pulled out at the last moment and they had to improvise. Or it could even be as simple as the actor knew a guy high up who was a friend or fan and got him the part. There is literally a multitude of reasons why they couldn't (or didn't) get an actual Korean actor for this role. And unless there's documented interviews with those who worked the production or casting we may never know.
@kri249
@kri249 2 года назад
@@aaronleverton4221 ok so checked out wikipedia and my assumption was correct. Turns out they really couldn't find an asian dude and Joel Grey was a last minute ring in. So it must have been a tough year for asian casting but at least they tried.

15:55 I disagree. It’s not racist to have someone of a different race play someone else of a different race when the context is to be historically accurate or culturally accurate. As a Korean American growing up in the 80's, I liked Remo Williams a lot. You have to understand, Korea, as a country was only known to Americans as a war torn 3rd world country as depicted in MASH. Everyone knew where China and Japan were, but if you were to ask an average person where Korea is on a map, maybe 10% would be able to point it out. Joel Grey depicting a Korean master wasn't a problem at all as Korean American actors back in those days were non-existent. I think the real problem was Fred Ward. Yes, he's a great actor. But he just doesn't have the looks for a leading role AND he has zero martial arts skills. Someone like Brandon Lee would have made this series a huge hit.

The original script for Running Scared was set in NYC and about two older cops about to retire. Paul Newman and Gene Hackman were the two actors the studio wanted. When Hyams came on board, though, that all changed as he wanted the setting moved to Chicago and to make the two cops younger. Screenwriter Gary Devore was hired to do the rewrite when Hyams signed on. Years later, Devore was allegedly murdered while researching another story. The cops found his car in a revene off a highway. They said he fell asleep on his way home from Mexico. The only problem was, his hands were cut completely off! So, I find the story of an "accident" very hard to believe. As for the Running Scared sequel, the only one Crystal & Hines actually read and turned down was called Still Running. Crystal said, "it just wasn't funny."

I always thought of Running Scared as Weekend at Bernie's but the buddies are cops and there is no Bernie. It could have been almost like a sequel to that movie there the two characters later on became cops. Remo Williams? Not much else to say except a true gem of a satirical action flick. So perfectly over the top in all the right ways and entertaining all throughout! Remo and Chiun were a great ball busting duo kicking ass with a fictitious and mysterious ancient Korean martial art instead of guns! Just watch it if you haven't seen it and thank me later! Wish they made more action movies like this one. Perfect amount of violence and Horatian satire.

Greatly appreciated this review. Loved both movies as a kid. I would suggest looking more at Gregory Hines resume. He was still acting up to his untimely death. He died a legendary tap dancer and great film star. If you look at his resume, you'll see he's an icon. I myself was hoping they did a part 2. Billy Crystal as an action star was'nt that unbelievable. He did a great job, and was able to deliver a serious tone when called upon. It would of been no different from Eddie Murphy (Beverly Hills Cop), Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys), or Chris Tucker (Rush Hour). Same formula... A comedian in an action series. If Martin could pull it off, Billy could as well. They're practically the same size, in their younger days.

I don’t think Grey meant it to be insulting at all but this was a year after Pat Morita in The Karate Kid. I have nothing against the movie at all but I think in hindsight they could have cast an asian - a few years later things had evolved enough that they would have never done it again.

I do not remember watching Running Scared, but I will check it out soon. I saw Remo Williams. Too bad they did not continue with more movies. Never saw Best of the Best and still do not.

I remember when movies, back in the day, were free of that PC bullcrap. We just watched, had fun and didn't care who played which character. I think it was called acting or something like that.

Why is it cringe worthy. He is an actor playing a role (you know, play pretend). An actor that did such a good job playing the role, he won awards. Yer "cringe worthy" statement seems to be nothing more than virtue signaling.
