@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
I use painters tape on the knives. It protects the surface from getting scratched up, but it means you have to tighten the clamp a bit extra (which would be the case with shrink tubing too). Shrink tubing sounds like a good idea but the limitation of it is that if you sharpen a lot you will be replacing it quite often as it will deteriorate somewhat quickly (my experience).

I dunno it seems like it adds a lot of unneeded steps and would throw off the angle settings since it pushes the blade out so much further
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
The angle settings on the original Precision Adjust is quite a bit different than what it says on the system. Anyone who trusts the numbers on the Precision Adjust is simply mistaken. YES, it does change the angles - which is why you are best off using a digital angle finder to verify what angle you are using, just like you need to do when using the original equipment. Sadly they don't make a super easy way to do it is possible to use a digital angle finder on the Precision Adjust.

How does the extra length affect the sharpening angle calibration? How does the longer clamp affect the flex which is an issue with the original clamp causing inconsistent angles? How does the metal clamp affect the finish of the blade which becomes an issue with expensive knives? By the time I purchase this wouldn't I be better off upgrading to the pro model and eliminate these issues I've outlined?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 6 месяцев назад
the length does affect the angle callibration, the angle is lower than it shows. BUT, the angle calibration is quite poor on the WSPA even in the original configuration - if you want a reasonably precise angle you will need to use a digital angle finder. Flex - that is fixed with the anti flex device that Gritomatic sells - see this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7BRHVA2U6m0.html I would suggest using painters tape or masking tape on knives with a shinny finish on them, In fact I use such tape on all my customer's knives to avoid any chance of scratching the blade with any clamp as even aluminum clamps can cause scratches. Finally, YES, the Pro model fixes a number of the problems that exist with the original WSPA.

Hi Thank you for your good video, how long does this knife sharpener usually work? And after how long should it be replaced? Question 2: I do not have an electronic angle meter, and without using an electronic angle meter, how do we know what angle number to use for each type of knife, such as 15 degrees or 17 degrees or 20 degrees or 25 degrees or 30 degrees?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 4 месяца назад
Q 1 - I don't know, I don't use this sharpener for my sharpening, I only used it enough to do a proper review Q 2 - You do not know because the numbers on the sharpener are not very accurate. If you want accurate angle measurement then you need to buy a digital angle finder.

Question will that clamp work with thicker knives , such as knives like Tops makes that are 1/4 inch thick?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
Great question - nope. Absolute max is 1/8", and even that is probably just ever so slightly too thick. I should have included that info in the video. In hindsight I am surprised that nobody has asked that before you. If you could afford TOPS knives I would so heartily suggest you get a much better sharpening rig than anything by Work Sharp. I generally suggest that people be willing to spend 10x the amount for a sharpening setup that they are willing to spend on a knife. Why? because a proper sharpening rig will last the rest of your life and will be able to sharpen 1000's upon 1000's of knives + sharpening is easier and more fun with a very good sharpening rig and they will enjoy the knife hobby a LOT more when sharpening is easier and you get better results. (that said, even with a high end rig there is definitely a learning curve for sharpening and it's best to learn on scrap knives that you don't mind making mistakes on)

Two problems with this that make it more difficult than the original. You now have metal to blade contact instead of rubber, hence the advice to put painter's tape on. And, you now need to tighten two hex screws just to clamp it onto the knife. So what do you gain with this system?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
Difficult? No, but it certainly does add the very tiny step that takes mere seconds of adding some painters tape IF you want to keep the side of your blade looking perfect, but if you don't care about the look of side of your knife its completely unnecessary. One of the main things you gain with this setup is a much firmer grip of the knife you are sharpening. If you haven't had a knife slip in the original WSPA clamp then you are very lucky so far and your luck is getting ready to run out. I personally would recommend other sharpening setups altogether but since so many people have WSPAs I have made some videos on how to make them more tolerable.

@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
Who is "they"? If you mean WorkSharp - I agree, that would be nice. If you mean 3rd party customers - they already have good clamps in their inventory and they need to make a custom adapter to make it fit in the WSPA. If I was them I would do it exactly as they have done - with a 3D printed adapter (cheap and fast) - because it costs a lot less to produce which means it will cost a lot less to the customer, which in turn means a customer might actually buy it. To make an entirely new one piece clamp that fits on the WSPA would make the cost go so high that few people would be likely to buy it, thus making it a dumb idea to invest research and development in. Afterall, even the original manufacturer made a two part clamp and just glued the two parts together. They knew how expensive it would be to make it a one piece part too. It's really juts a few minutes of effort to install this upgrade - something that most people can easily do without any pain.

They sent dozens of this plastic clap traps out to shill outdoor channels with expectation of pimping favorable reviews. By the time a person adds all the necessary hot-rod farkles to this system a person is at the starting point of a KME, which is a solid system to start with and build upon, with many more stone options and quality accessories that are not PLASTIC.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
Did you see my review of this system? Lets just say it want very positive. Still your estimation of the upgrades getting into KME territory is quite the stretch. The thing is a lot of people already have the WSPA, and most of those will not spend enough for a KME, at least not in a single transaction, so it makes sense for them to make their WSPA better. Better is better. Sure, they would have been smarter to save up and got a better system the first time but its too late, they already have a WSPA, so for them it makes sense to improve on it. For others it may make sense to start saving up for a ture precision sharpener but I'll leave that decision to them while I share (less than perfect, but still reasonalble) options with them.

After Market Clamp - No Blade Protection built in, needs tool to tighten in two spots - Holds blade tighter OEM clamp - Built in blade protection, needs no tool to tighten - Holds blade less tight but more than adequate to do the job. I actually could see this product be good for people that have low pinching grip with their fingers and have trouble tightening the thumb screw other than that I see no reason for it (yes, I do own this sharpener).
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
I hear your main point and yes, it is not the best possible clamp and I never tried to claim that that is what it is, just that I believe it is better than the original form WSPA. It's aluminum, that is itself a form of blade protection as it is quite a bit softer than any blade should ever be, and I found it to hold blades better than the original as I have experienced both the original and this one.
