This is the best value carbon wheelset I have ridden in the past 12 years. They also get top reviews worldwide. Use this code to get 15% discount off Elitewheels wheels .... "ozcycle15"
This video is the only one I found with great information. I've been trying to decide between Elite Wheel Drive 50D. I now now know Drive is the way to go. PS I'll be putting those wheels on my Polygon A7X with vicotia Corsa Pro Thank you very much Sir.
Specialized designed there Aero Wheelsets Roval Rapide CLX Aero Wheelsets for 26 mm tires . I use 28 mm 4 comfort, but racing or xtra fast training l stick with Specialized recommendation on the 26 mm
My 2015 Roval CLX 60s have over 67,000 miles. I replaced the original bearings…that’s it. I’d buy another set in a heartbeat based on my experience with this brand.
The new Roval are brilliant as well. Well built & RoadCC tested these in the real world, they won. The Roval like reserve, & Cadex are even wider wheelsets. That’s the rule of 105 of aerodynamics.
Thank for this very helpful video. I live and ride in Belgium which is a great place to ride but has plenty of long strerches of sometims-rough cobbles. I've got my eyes on the Elite Drive 50D but am wondering how they (carbon spokes/ceramic bearings and all) would hold up to such abuse versus, say, typcial steel spoked/bearings wheels? Thanks for insights.
They should be fine. If you have any problems there's the three year warranty. If something doesn't go wrong within the 3 years that's good going. I have a set of their gravel wheels and they are tough as nails on rough, rocky sections.
Yes, the goal is hookless and that’s why mtb rims are needed. There is a relation between hight and width, slimness which is key to reduce turbulent flow. The aero advantages are less when increasing the width of the rim and tires.
The only Bontrager wheels that are 25mm internal are the "V" models which are more of an "all-road/gravel" wheelset. The road wheels such as RSL 51/62 are 23mm internal.
The "best value" are the carbon hoops you get from a pro team that is folding or changing equipment. Takes some time and energy but I just bought a brand new set of VISION SL30s for about 30 % of the retail price - brand new tubies glued on (yes I will reglue before riding).
Great video - A question re aerodynamics. If you have 28mm external rim width wouldn't you match it with a 26mm tyre rather than a 28mm? I've found that most tyres are wider than the listed measurements when pumped up. The 26mm becomes closer to a 28mm in a Pirelli. Whereas a 28mm would become a 30mm creating the tyre bulge over the rim that you illustrate in your video?
@@stevenleffanue what tire brand offers the less bulgier/more oval shape? Im looking to minimize NOT the millimeters wide of the tire but the millimeters height comming out from of the wheel edge.
Thanks for the detailed review! Would you recommend the gravel rims for a road bike running 30-32c tyres then, as those rims have an outer width of 31mm? The 24mm internal may balloon the tyre slightly wider I suppose.
I take it that you are now recomending this wheelset for everyday riding? Recall your first review stated only for raceday. Lookijg at getting the drives but 40d since i live and ride near the beach (carinbean island)
thanks for sharing. just came here after some of your videos on the freehub and bearings replacement, really helpfull. look, i just realized after learning all of these that my hub is a piece of crap. i need a 12mm allen key to remove the freehub from the non drive side and its really stuck. so it looks like you cant just choose a hub and put in any wheel right? so what woudl be your sugestion on a cost/benefit regarding service for a long distance rider ? thanks for any help
well, i have 40 c tires on my CX bike, with 19c rims, if i go wider rims, frame cant fit my 40c tires... what im saying is, it all depends on many aspects.
I only have a rim brake bike. How do the Drive carbon rim brakes compare to traditional aluminum rim brake wheels (I have Campagnolo Shamal Ultra C17)?
@@stevenleffanue Thank you. Have you actually ridden the Ultra C17s? They have very low rolling resistance using Continental C25s. So, I am a bit surprised that the Drives would be faster. Also, my concern is the Drive 40d are a much taller profile and I fear the cross winds will make the bike unstable. I weigh 160 lbs (72.3 kilograms). Does the wide wheel geometry offset the obtrusiveness of the wheel to cross winds?
The story of wider is faster and more comfortable is like thick paint 😂 at my weight and size the most comfortable is a 25c and a box section rim. 34c is just too wide, bikes feel and handles like a 4WD which is something that not many people address, hence the vintage bikes still ride smoother. Cheers from Oz🇦🇺
Train on cheap Chinese rubber, 35s. Race on 25/28s. Been doing it for years, few/no flats, less wear on race wheels, added work/strength from riding heavier wheels. And gives you some use for the wheels that came with bike, most of the time.
Wider is faster because of many factors. Road vibration, contact patch, tire/rim interface....it's been proven time and time again that modern tires are MUCH faster than the old 19-23mm tires. Harder tires feel harsh which our minds equate to faster.
Love all three sets of elite wheels I have. However he is over complicating the width. I run 40c gravel challenge xp tires on my 55 deep elite road wheels and the tire shape is perfect. Look it up the gravel seen is using road wheels and gravel tires pretty commonly these days. Saw it all over the place at unbound this year in Ks.
Is this an advertisement section of "drive wheels"? I have been whatching you and I have never seen these wheels on your bikes. Are those really excelent wheels?
What particular configuration was that of the Drive wheels on your left hand at 9:30? External/ internal widths and tire size.. if possible tire size at inflated pressure 😅 thanks a lot
He has missed out the theory behind it: 105 silca rule of aerodynamics, is in a blog. Just google it. You look at the internal width which spreads the width of the tire. Thé élite are mostly 28mm external & often 21mm internal. They are amongst the best. The patent is gone for the DT Swiss hub 240s. So they now have this technology built in. The end caps slip off easily but can be replaced with tighter tolerances of real DT Swiss hub end caps sold all over. I own 3 sets. Elite were so helpful and allowed me to buy some 50 rear & 40 front as I do mixed uk terrain. My 4th set is just in & is 45mm for all terrain again: 1320g! Great value for money 💰.
It is funny for someone deep into lubricant to try to mount a tyre without soap... a basic missed by so many mechanics, even more with recreational riders.
Been watching them myself, their carbon fiber spoke version carrying hubs with a ratchet system. Problem for them is they are hardly known so it's difficult to choose them over a winspace or elite. Hambini did a video on one of their lower end (non carbon spoked) wheel sets
28mm outer width is too narrow by today's standards. Probably perfect if you ride competitevely professionally, but if you are just an amature I think 28c tyre is a bit too harsh. As long as you start riding anywhere away from a perfectly smooth tarmac it is probably not better than 30-32c even for professional athletes. Also, for the price you could probably get DT Swiss 350 or even 240 from the biggest players, not noname hubs.
I run 25C GP5000 with TPU tubes in Melbourne and Girona and there's no problem at all with comfort. 65kg, 95psi. Wider tyres are more comfortable but slower.
Best VALUE Carbon Fibre Wheelsets are without Doubt the Roval Rapide CLX Aero Wheelsets or the Roval Rapide CLX 32 mm Climbing Wheels. None of the Chinese carbon fiber wheelsets have been designed in a ( Win Tunnel ) Specializeds name 4 there wind tunnel.
@@myxti3669 the 1st Edition were 1400 grams . So 4 DEEP SECTION CARBON FIBER WHEELSETS thats light , very light . And l have ×3 sets of them .
