If you have access to crimping tools for free, do it properly. But this should work as well, just those pins gets imperfections made by screwdriver. Not a big deal, it should still work. Good enought to save money instead of buyng crimping tools for one time use. But

You son of a gun, I tried and it worked in the first try. My locla broadband operator was charging me 200 bucks just to do crimping and keep in mind I even had the rj45 pin as well so all he had to do is just use that tool. To which I declined and tried to do it myself today. You're awesome man

Thank you for this! I accidentally severed my Cat6 cable working on a framing project. Took me 2 tries but finally the lights went on! Someone here mentioned using a metal ruler to push the pins down...awesome tip! I also used a stubby flathead screwdriver after pushing them flush with the plastic with the ruler. Using a firm rocking motion with the screwdriver was key in finally pushing the pins down enough to pierce the jacket. Be careful not to crush the plastic bits between the pins, that's how I messed things up the first try.

Bravo. I like the way you show both use of a crimping tool as well as cheaper alternatives. I don't do this much so the home tool option is what I was looking for; I don't need another expensive tool in my box that will probably become obsolete before I reach for it again.

Quite helpful, indeed. There may arise certain situations, when you can't get a hold of your crimping tool: in those scenarios, this makeshift arrangement saves your day. Also, for those who don't want to buy one for that odd crimp job, this technique may come in handy . I use screwdriver to push in the latch and a steel ruler to push the copper pins into the wire.

Make sure you use the right connector! Stranded wire connectors are not good with solid wire ("backbone system cable"). And solid wire connectors are not good with stranded ("flex patch cable"). These how too videos do not tell you that. There are "universal connectors" but installers don't usually like them or use them. Just use the right one for the job to make the best cables. Here's the simple rule: If the prongs are INLINE (straight) then that is used for stranded wire. If the prongs are OFFSET (NOT INLINE but crooked) they are for solid wire connections. Even the stores selling connectors rarely get it right. You have to check. Using the wrong connector makes poor cables that fail early. Search for the pictures of the prongs. You understand it clearly when you see them. Know your cable wires before you crimp them! Solid or stranded.

Great! I made it successfully. One thing to note is the pins must be pushed down so that finally they are below the plastic. If it feels flat, that means the pins didn't be pushed to the end.

Very important, make sure when crimping the base of the plug that the pvc sleeve is the one being crimped so it acts like a strain relief, otherwise you will be crimping the data wires themselves and it will cause them to fail over time as you plug and unplug the cable.

You don't need to cut the wires the exact same length, you do that after driving the all contact pins into the wires. And you don't need to shove them in all at once, you can do it one at a time to ensure that they all went into the correct holes, provided that you strip the cable about 35mm long. I used small flat-head screw driver, and a small hammer to drive the tiny contact pins into the wires. Hammering the pins is more accurate, provided that the plug rests on a flat surface and not on the locking clip.
