Best method to clean an old cast iron tub with a porcelain finish is the Mr Clean Magic Eraser and in this video I used "Extra Durable" but there are a few different versions available. I tried out 4 different methods which are all listed below and even though each one did improve the tub condition the Magic Eraser was the most effective and easiest to remove the dirt and grime.
Method #1: Baking Soda and Ammonia
1/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 ammonia into warm water
Method #2: Salt and Lemon
Cover the stain with table salt and squeeze half a lemon
Method #3: Dawn and Vinegar
1 cup dawn and 1 cup vinegar. Spray on and let sit for 45 - 60 minutes.
Method #4: Mr Clean Magic Eraser (WINNER!)

Even tho it’s old and needed cleaning. THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THAT TUB. I have passed up several places over the fact they put those cheap I guess fiberglass tubs in I love cast-iron tubs.

It would of been nice to see a dirty old tub with rust stains etc. and see it get clean. The tub you started with don't look bad at all.

THX! Will try it. I would warn anyone off from cleaning with vinegar + anything and dawn + anything. I used some home remedies for removing cat urine smell from a carpet (none of which worked!) including several with vinegar. That was ten years ago and my lungs have never recovered. Ditto Dawn is very toxic. I don't know why they rinse birds with that stuff. My favorite dish detergent is Ivory but it probably won't clean a tub. Anyway, home remedies can be just as noxious as the stuff you buy in the cleaning aisle. I'll try the Mr Clean. I also renovated my bathroom with new floor and wall tiles and fixtures but didn't want to remove the tub as it seemed fine. Now does seem kind of dingy and could use a good cleaning.

Try green gobbler enzyme cleaner. It worked for me in the past (like new result) but then family brought a cleaning lady and whatever she did destroyed the tub.

A good thing to do is let your cleaner work for you. Let it sit for a while before wiping and you won't have to scrub much at all. It's not good to use those chemicals on top of each other and it takes a lot of time to get truly rinsed off. Be careful and wear a mask, the fumes aren't alway obvious, but can cause respiratory problems. I use Lime Away and have used water and Bar Keepers Friend on my tubs. You can use the pumice stone where tough dirt or grime is built up. I cannot stress how leaving the cleaner on the tub for a little while allows the cleaner to do it's thing. You don't put it on and wipe or scrub immediately...it needs to hit the porous part of the tub and it lifts the dirt out and makes the mineral stains disappear.
@janinewalsh4631

A pumice stone works wonderfully also! But they shrink quickly so have a few on hand
@mrnt1257
@mrnt1257 2 года назад
I’ve also heard that they leave micro scratches which makes staining easier in the future. Maybe that’s why this tub is so bad. But yes, we may resort to that. We’ve done it in the past.

I have very hard water in my area. The previous owners had a bath mat that left marks where it contacted the tub. The marks were actually hard water lime deposits embedded in the porcelain finish. Tried everything imaginable with no success, but now it is coming clean with lime away & 2000 grit sandpaper.

Lime Away works you can buy it at most areas, ACE and hardware stores usually carry it. Spray it and leave it for as long as you can, until it disappears.

If you men the sandpaper it is 2500 grit it's very fine and doesn't hurt it. The sandpaper didn't help much either, so i used rustoleum tub and tile paint.@@mrs.childers8333

I wish I would've found this video last week😅. Just moved. Tried many solutions on a course of 3days (oxiclean, vinegar & baking soda, peroxide & baking soda, vinegar & dawn and Comet) on a cast iron tub. It looks better, but I can still see a little scum. In my opinion I think the baking soda/vinegar worked best. I was told what I see is the wear from the tub is down to the cast iron -this making it look dirty to me👀. I'm going to try the magic eraser and pumice stick. Hopefully one of them will work.

It is because Mr. Clean is a fine sandpaper so you should use in moderation. It removes the surface so it is on you to make sure and not go too deep and remove the enamel or else you will be reglazing at roughly $300 - $400.

Wondering if the Mr. Clean damages the finish on the porcelain tub. I know Mr. Clean takes off paint from the wall when I have used it to remove scuff marks. Can you tell me about that? I don't want to use it and then have to refinish the tub. Thanks for your help.
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 5 лет назад
Hi Jennifer, good question and you are right that when using magic erasers on painted walls, doors, etc. you will often remove a little paint depending on the paint finish and as such should take care. When it comes to porcelain-enameled cast iron tubs you should be fine. In fact there is a small video advertising cleaning old tubs with Magic Erasers www.mrclean.com/en-us/how-to/bathroom/bring-your-old-tub-back-to-life

@@scottrossgirvan8009 hmmmm, wouldn't think the Oxi Clean would remove the finish but depending on what you used to scrub the tub that might have taken some of the finish off. Did you just use a sponge with an abrasive side like in the video or something more abrasive like steel wool?

@@EverydayHomeRepairs a bit of steel wool

@@scottrossgirvan8009 makes sense I would say the steel wool might be the culprit. For the tough grime you could try a scouring stick which won't cause any damage to the porcelain. Good luck!

I used greased lightning, sprayed, allowed to sit, scrubbed. Although it lifted the top layer of stain, it didn't penetrate into the deeper layers. (After the first application, I repeated the process without any further stain eliminated). Going to give the Lime Away and 2000 grit sand paper a try! 💃
