I always place the parsley seeds between two bits of fine sandpaper and lightly scarify the seed coating. This let's water through the seed case and the seeds germinate quicker.
WELL Said Siloe "Parsley delivers" Yes it does- mine overwintered (Northeast zone 5) and came back with babies. I hope it goes to seed this year. And also agree with the basil. I just looked at my seeds and found I have 8 varieties to plant this year....Do we really need 8 varieties....ABSOLUTELY.
Such an inspirational video again, thank you! ❤ I've started sowing my parsley in the fall after I saw how easily it self-sowed around my kitchen garden. It'll just germinate when the conditions are right in the spring and I won't have to worry about it. When I sow it in the spring and want it to germinate fast (I'm a highly impatient gardener 😉) I pour hot water, - and I mean hot, straight out of the kettle boiling - over the seeds and let them soak until the water cools. That takes like two weeks off of the germination. But does seem a bit extreme to some people. 😂 It was the only way I got my seeds from Canna edulis to germinate and I've been trying it with various difficult to germinate seeds since then.
You should try some Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds! I've been trying some heirloom varieties from them, and I'm so excited to finally get to eat the results lol
Hello Siloé. I’m one of those that prefers cilantro. It’s a culture thing I believe, we use it in salsa, guacamole and I love the flavor in salads. I know parsley has a lot great health benefits and it does grow better than cilantro, and that is unfortunate for me. The purple basil is my daughter’s favorite, I sowed some seeds to give to her. I sowed holy basil for me for tea. I never thought I would care for it and last year was the first year I grew it and loved it so much that I have a lot of little plants to share with family. 😉 Thank you for sharing. 😉
Hi Siloe! My nsme is River Costa I am also from Brasil, now leaving in downtown Miami FL. I being learning a lot with your videos, however looks like you leave away far north from Miami FL, I am in a building, 30 floors up and only have 1 balcony (facing a very hot SW summer all year long) as garden space, of course I still have to share this balcony with 2 other frieds. Based on that I understand I will need to: 1- grow in pots/buckes. 2- grow plants can hold this amount of energy. 3- dripping irrigation is a must, since anything can get dead & dry in a matter of hours. 4- Take advantage of the heat and build a vertical home composting bin. My first idea was to buil a edible garden. I thought about planting tomato trees on the outside perimeter, since they can hold heavy sun light all day long, that would bring some shade for the balcony where I could take advantage and plant some elephant garlic, zucchini, eggplant, edible flowers, herbs, ... Any advice or thoughts would be heavily appreciated.
Yes, that is great exposure. Tomatoes and peppers and maybe even eggplants will love it there. make sure to plant in pots and have irrigation that will not fail. Fertilize using concentrated organic fertilizer like Espoma Plantone. Herbs should do well also, like chives, basil, oregano and parsley. Cilantro will work if you always water it. Zucchini might be difficult to get producing. Try to get the biggest containers you can get. The bigger the pot, the more likely you are to have it produce. Just remember to water and fertilize on a schedule.
Hi Siloe! Thank you very much for all the tips, very well appreciated. I really forgot about the peppers, I am on food business, some stuffed red bell peppers would be very yummy. I am putting lots of hopes on my kitchen composting, besides all raw kitchen scraps, I am planning to go very heavy on eggshells for calcium, used coffee grounds for phosphorus and phosphate, Banana peels for potassium and Atlantic seawater diluted 1/20. As fertilizers, I will try the recommended one thank you, I am also planning to use the grains soaked water fermented with dirt, ones a week in morning, as I done before when I was in Brazil. Flat leaf parsley is a big staple in my garden. Strangely, I have much more success direct sowing basil in pots instead of in the ground fo some reason. Have still to figure out why. Enjoy your content and very pleasant demeanour 🌷🌷
Once you have parsley in your garden....you will never, ever be rid of it. It will grow EVERYWHERE, especially if you let it flower in the second year.
@@suburbanhomestead ah! I live in Portland (OR) and the parsley I let flower and go to seed has promptly taken over my garden and my neighbors yard as well! So has the fennel and burnet! I am grateful- but just a surprise!
I try not to use my old microwave except to reheat gooey things like pasta and oatmeal and I'll probably never buy a new one once this one dies but one thing that it does best is to dry moist herbs like parsley and cilantro to perfection with the greenest green and great flavour. Put a thin handful between 2 paper towels and dry for 1 minute. It's foolproof, though high mineral herbs like comfrey and stinging nettle will spark up and start a fire...so beware! :))
