After growing Basil from seed and failing, I started it with the plate germination method which gave me a great harvest even planting it later in the season than ideal. I share a recipe using fresh produce from the garden including basil.

I love all of your videos and feel that we are kindred spirits. My husband and I are also living in and restoring a beautiful old house and have dreams of going off-grid in the next few years. He is an artist, I was an artist and a plant biologist for many years and am in love with cottage gardening, which is how I recently discovered your videos. I just watched the "I made a mistake with youtube" video from a few years back and am glad that you didn't give it up. I appreciate quality very much! I hope it doesn't take too much time from your gardening. Cheers!

@@lisal8529 LOL There is still no reason to be afraid of color. Worse case scenario you have clashing colors. If you do enough clashing colors, it almost becomes a type of harmony in an of itself. :-) But I won't lie, there is nothing quite as soothing visually as subdued and harmonious tertiary hues

My basil last year was a failure. But following your method, I pre-sprouted the seeds and today planted them in their cells. Fingers crossed . I see pesto in the future . Enjoying your videos.

Have you tried to grow Madagascar Beans? This is a perennial that lasts for about 7 years. The young green beans can be used like string beans. The dried beans (this happens in the drying pod) are brilliant to soak overnight and use in soups and sauces

not sure if anyone else addressed this but with the splitting tomatoes that can be avoided by keeping the plants watered more evenly. the splits come from the fruit swelling when they take in a lot of water all at once so if you put too much water on them while they were dryish the skin swells too much and splits. i personally have used orbeez in my soil with tomatoes to keep water retained, they are non toxic and are biodegradable. you can also use other methods but keeping them hydrated consistently is key. you dont want your soil drying out for too long, with the orbeez i can have water readily available to them without drowning the roots and rotting the soil.

Grasshoppers ate every bit of corn pollen I had last year. Most of my corn wasn't pollinated because they made off with all of it. I'm not sure if you know what causes a locust plague? It's when 2 Grasshoppers bump into each other, then turn into locusts. Just seeing you holding one half of a potential plague gives me the heebie jeebies! I plant to cut all the corn pollen and keep it inside this year. 💖

Amazing video! Had me glued on till the end. I was soooo excited to see glimpses of the garden in its glory! I’ve always been curious to see the new garden ever since I realized that the building raised bed videos were filmed last year. 🤣 The beans are AMAZING. I paused quite a bit to creep on the other beds and see what else was growing 🙈 so excited for everything. Weather is picking up here, good 85s since a few days. I see growth spurts on so many of my plants. Can’t wait! Need to start okra soon, but waiting for it to get hotter. Peppers and zucchini is my main focus, started both from seed for the first time. Hope some day my brand new garden can be as prolific and sustaining as yours. Hope you’re doing well in these trying times. Stay safe!

Glad you liked it. In this video I did show a sneak peek of it later in the year, but the next videos will go back and forth as we explore new plants. This year I'm working to get an even more lush garden (with flowers) I feel people have not been as excited to see these early videos because the space was still a little bit more bare. I hope that by seeing the beans using the structure as support, the whole decorative bed became more useful and practical and less "only decorative" in the minds of some.

I had no clue sweet basil was a tropical plant! With it commonly being called "Genovese"/with my strong association with basil and pasta, I assumed that it was a European plant originally. I've looked through the origins of many herbs and plants, but hadn't looked up basil yet. Wonderful to learn! Me and my housemates looove basil. I haven't tried growing it outside yet and have only ever kept them as a kitchen windowsill plant, but this is inspiring me to try propagating some basil cuttings from my indoor starts for the summer this year! Seeing your garden in the summer abundance is awe inspiring!! I have only grown in containers for the past 5 years, but have now moved to a home where I can grow in soil. I look forward to the harvests this year!

I studied Fine Arts/Painting. Never had the patience to really study music, but I suppose I always had musical intuition. With a computer I can slow things down and compose things line by line without being hampered by dexterity. I suppose I should try to really study music theory, but for now I do it for fun and if I study it too much maybe I'll be intimidated by all the rules of how to properly compose.

Happy to hear you enjoy it. I'm trying to create a bit of a parallel universe people can escape to unwind after a stressful week. I repainted some old dingy cabinets with blue cabinet paint. I don't remember the paint name, but I chose that one from scratch. The terracotta color was from a discounted mistint I got in the home improvement store. It is still a work in progress because I still want to edit out the plates hanging on the wall. There is too much white and cream in them. they need to be more low-key low contrast within the blue and terracotta Mexican pottery palette. It just takes time to find the right things. You can't rush it, and buying everything at once is not fun. It needs to be slowly found.

Man. I’m on my 3rd/4th basil plants and I just cant figure it out. I live in a pretty hot and humid place. I have a small plant from the store in a medium container- big enough for growth but not too big. It’s out side on the patio where it gets plenty of indirect sun. I try to keep a close eye on the soil moisture, making sure not to over water it (or to get the leaves wet) but making sure it retains moisture. I feel lie it SHOULD be doing well, but leaves keep getting “bruised” and fall off. It’s kinda growing but not very much. Any tips??
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
It needs direct sun. Just water the soil regularly. Also make sure you have a good quality well draining soil. But some straw or grass clipping mulch to retain some of the moisture near the roots.
