Awesome video man.. I TRIED SO MUCH TO COOL DOWN my backwards compatible PS3.. thermal paste multiple times including under the heat plates, a new fan, taking the cover off the power supply.. what ended up finally making it quieter is the CARDBOARD of all things!! It still runs a little loud because I thermal pasted everything on the outside EXCEPT under the CPU.. but when I put the cardboard on the CPU side, it finally gives off more heat and sounds quieter than before and it is thanks to you!
Thanks for the great videos man! I have a few questions about this... 1) Are you still using the CoolLaboratories thermal paste? I see the silicone stuff on the CPU here 2) Do you need to scrape and replace the U of silicone on the edge of the IHS/CPU? 3) I think you've mentioned that you're cutting the IHS off with a file in previous videos. I've tried fishing line and a feeler gauge, and neither have worked. Maybe make a video on the tool you're using?
Yeah, no Problem ;) 1) Are you still using the CoolLaboratories thermal paste? (sometimes) 2) Do you need to scrape and replace the U of silicone on the edge of the IHS/CPU? (NO, just clean it on the IHS) 3) I think you've mentioned that you're cutting the IHS off with a file in previous videos. I've tried fishing line and a feeler gauge, and neither have worked. Maybe make a video on the tool you're using? (if you get a lot Thumbs up on that question, i wll do a Video about) ;)
UltraNSC Hey man, I found one of your Deutsche videos explaining your tool. I applied the same sandpaper and fingernail scratch test to a .008 feeler gauge, and it's worked PERFECT for 5 systems now, nice and easy cut...so thanks for that tip! I've just had issues now with the temperature of the CPU. I've got a CECH-G model at 54*/48* idle with fan mod, little high, and my most recent CECH-E model shoots up to 75*/48* idle with fan control utility!!! Wondering if the leftover U of silicone glue is preventing good contact with the die. I've cleaned the IHS, and spreading MX-4 as you recommend in other videos... is there any harm in removing ALL of the glue? Thanks again for your time and great videos, keep them coming!
Hi and Thank you very much to... You can remove the Glue just on the CELL IHS, this is fully enogh.. if your CPU is still getting to hot, than your Presure is not great enough, thats why it gets still overheating...
Thanks for the reply buddy! Tried a couple days ago... took apart, cleaned, reapplied thermal paste, added cardboard for a little more pressure, still no luck. Little bit better at 68*c idle. Took apart again, removed ALL glue from IHS and CPU, reused cardboard for extra pressure, and now 53* idle, 59* in-game with control fan utility on payload mode. My living room is 26-28*c in the afternoon at this time of year with the sunlight....TOO HOT! (Tucson, AZ, USA) I'm wondering how these machines were assembled at the IHS stage. Robotic?? I feel like the silicone was keeping the IHS from making good contact all around the die, maybe a bit too high. There were a lot of air bubbles in the glue on this one. After adding pressure the first time, and taking it apart afterwards, I could finally see good contact in the thermal grease. Seems to be on a machine to machine basis. Anyway, something to keep in mind! Thanks again, and keep up the great work! This IS the place to be *thumbs up*
Just how exactly did you know where to make the marks for the heatspreaders? Did you use both of them to get a precise idea of where to make the indents?
Easy, when you open all, you have the old thermal paste on the cooler, after delid the IHS put the IHS on the cooler over the old paste and mark it ;) I have a lot videos about that 😊
Great videos.. ive learned alot. I would bend the heat spreader clamps before butting cardboard in between the plate. The clamps are what put pressure on the cpu not the back plate pushing on the motherboard from the bottom. Just bend the spring clamps open more
good for the disassembly but I would like to know what silicone is used for the processor and see an assembly, since it does not have videos of it and there are several disassembly videos
Great videos and great channel, you really helped me a lot :D I just have 1 question, I have a ps3 and need to replace thermal under the CPU IHS and I only have MX-4 thermal paste.. I know that is good for putting on the IHS but can I put it under IHS or it has to be arctic silver 5?
Thank you so much for your videos. They are going to be my guide working on 2 phat PS3 I have here. I just have one question. If I replace the thermal paste under the IHS and over it do you still think it's necessary to put the PSU on the outside of the PS3? Or replacing the thermal paste is enough?
When your fan runs at full speed for no reason it will probably be the thermal paste underneath the IHS for the CPU right, no need to replace it for RSX? (PS3 FAT) Do we also need to remove silicone under IHS?
Hey ! First of all : Thanks for this video. You told us a lot of details. I just want to know something about the RSX heatsink since I never done that before. There is 4 chips under it on each coner (the memory I guess). Do I need to put thermal paste or something on it ? Or I just do the same thing you did with the CPU heatsink ? Also, do I need to put a carton for both CPU and GPU ? Once again, thanks a lot. I'll be able to heal my BC PS3 like a boss \(^.^)/ she always make a lot of noise after a couple of minutes, even if i'm only on the XMB !
+The Satan Claus Hello If you do all like me, u will have no Problems. i also never use thermal paste on the Memory Chips, i just did it one time for an old Video, but i never do it on the Memory Chips, thei just dont need it. Your PS3 gets loud, because the thermal Compund inside the IHS is old and bad ^^ Just take care on open the IHS! CPU can be Danger, because if you scratch the CPU, nothing more will work!
Woah, I did not expect an answer within 10 minutes lol. well, i'll be carefull with the CPU and i'll probably try to make a nailfile like you did on another video. Do you have a recommendation for a similar tool I could use ? I'm not a women so I don't own a nailfile hehe.
I'm planning to only use MX-4. I read somewhere that, while Arctic Silver 5 is more effective, but it has a lot of drawbacks: the curing period, it's conductive and, most important, it decays faster than MX-4. MX-4, on the other hand, doesn't have a cure period, it's not conductive, and, while it doesn't perform as well as AS 5 (while on its peak), it perfermorms more consistently and evenly on the long run. The manufacturer guarantees 7-8 years on reliable performance. I also read good things about Gelid GC-3 Extreme. It's a tad more expensive, but it has all the advantages of MX-4, and performs as well or even better than AS5
+Xerxes1688 Yeah, but i and not only i love Artic Silver 5, it´s just still ones of the best Thermal Compound, Used a lot times also worked on old PC´s longer than 6 years without Problem. AS5 has 9,0 W/mK, and 99,9% Silver, and it works just Perfectly also after 6 years and more, i use this Thermal Compound very very Long and im still suprised. MX4 is also very great, no need better...
Hi, I'd like to ask you one question. When I used the metal thermal paste, I put the CPU heatspreader the other way. Should I take it apart and replace it normally? The PS3 runs just fine, never goes over level 3 fan and there's a shitton of heat coming out of it (much more than with Ceramique 2 thermal paste lol).
Worried bout my used 60gb fat that i got a year ago now learning how they overheat but so far no big problems and fan doesn't get as loud as some ive seen. only time it shut down with beeps was after playing TLOU for 12 hrs and freezing a few times during LBP. Watching vids in case it happens again but scared to scratch cpu like a lot of ppl with more experience have done. Should someone wear an anti-static bracelet when doing repairs like these? Can't it shorten the life of the ps3 without one?
my ps3 has rlod, I can not play games for more than 30 min, do you recommend doing this mod?, already replace the thermal paste, clean the ps3 well, change the old hard disk of 80 gb, I only have to do this
Hi UltraNSC I have a problem with my PS3 fat . . . I've tried a lot of work arounds changed the thermal paste with MX4 several times but it didn;t help. My Heat Sensor thinks that my PS3 is running hot, which it doesn't, and it always keeps the fan @ 100% a few minutes after starting the console, even in the meniu . . .is there any workaround for this problem ? Big thanks and keep up with nice tutorials
Hey im just wondering if i were to remove the IHS on my ps3 for the RSX only and reapply the thermal compound from the inside. Will it fix the false overheating it shows 81°C on RSX in multiman when its not hot at all and 40°C on CPU. Or should i do cpu and rsx both? I have a ps3 slim btw. Please let me know thanks
Hello my friend. Great video! Let me ask you something. Did you have any problems related to the removal of the PSU cover in the last 6 years (since the video was uploaded)?? Greetings!!
+UltraNSC please help. I have removed my ps3 RSX, now when I start my ps3 its a black screen for approximately 30 seconds then shuts off with flashing red light. What have I done wrong? Is the IHS not making enough contact or something else wrong
Hi, can you please help me out. My ps3 works sometime only. When I turn the ps3 on then I get YLOD AFTER 5 seconds. I have tested thet the motherboard is fine, GPU and CPU and an extra chip works fine. Then I was keeping tying to turn on, then I get it working, then the ps3 works fine, I can even play games. But when I turn it off, it will turn on without problem. When I leave the ps3 off for about 10 minutes, then the YLOD is back after 5 seconds. I have flashed the ps3 still no luck, power supply changed but still no luck. Please help me out mate, I know you have more knowledge then me. :(
PLEASE HELP ME!!!...I have an ps3 slim ...when i turn on the console and when i play a game (like GTA V) , the fan is getting very louder but console works ....it works 2-3 hours in game an then he show me "the sistem became hot...." , i changed the thermal paste but nothing ...and the console didn't became hot ...i think it's a problem with heat sensor , but i don't know ...Please help me! Thanks
the silicone or whatever they use to keep the cpu on the ps3 hard on one of my ps3's. how would you recommend getting it off. Ive gotten the rsx ihs off with no problems.
will this method work for ps3 slim 250gb? can i use a kitchen knife which is a bit sharp to remove ihs , i dont have anything else in the house to remove it without damaging it
Nice buddy, pls macke a videotutorial about downgrade PS3 nor with teensy++2.0, btw in your other video were you can be done in 4.66 ofw to same steps?? Thx again for ur big job
Excellent Video Just a Question, I know you tell use ARTIC SILVER 5 Inside but, Can I use MX-4 or not? I do not have ARTIC SILVER 5. in the place than I live it is impossible to find it, So if I can, I will buy it on eBay, but it will takes long time to get it. and I dont want to wait a long time. Thank you in advance
Thanks for the video! I get my hands in a new factory sealed ps3 80 gb retrocompatible, do you recommend doing this? I maybe wait a few years? Thanks in advanced
Can I purchase a few heat spreader CPU removal tools from you that you use on these PS3 CPU heatspreaders? I have tried over and over to make one myself, and either the nail file breaks when bending it, OR when filing it down the nail file breaks, or when trying to get the nail file inside under the heatspreader, it will not fit, or when it does fit, it again breaks! I cannot get any nail file to FIT under the heatspreader of the CPU, and all of them BREAK when I DO. Please help me out, I have tried this for 5 months now, and I CANNOT get this to work for me. Please sell me the tools I need to do this so I can put thermal paste under the CPU heatspreader, or I will have to pay someone $89 to remove the heatspreader for me, because that is what these people out here charge to do that, and I cannot afford them to do this to 4 PS3s that I own. Please help me out NSC!
The PS3 fat edition the Power Supply Unit is the problem of the YLOD, NSC I fix that with a fan of 92mm in top of the PSU. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lC8BgeU_Xhs.html
