This was a great beginners lesson although I've known some people who should know better who still drag their saddle sideways. Thanks for posting this. I am a firm believer in showing consideration for the horse. If someone doesn't care about that then they might do it correctly in order to get the cooperation of their horse which directly benefits them.

I would love to join you but I'm both elderly and disabled and on a small fixed income. I've downsized my life to the bare bones in order to be able to keep the black stallion. He is almost certainly the last horse I'll ever share life with and the last one I'll ever start which was easily done due to over 6 decades of experience.

I'm 65 now but was a very patient trainer with my Q/Horses back in the day , and taking things slow and keeping your horse calm and creating a good bond with them is so much more fun with a lot better results .I bought a beautiful q/h mare once that could'nt be caught once out in the paddock , after about 2 hours I had her come running to a whistle , standing to be geared up then standing so I could take the gear off , it was so much fun working with her . I also had a back injury so for about 6 weeks I couldnt ride I taught her to give kisses and shake hands & bow LOL , Why ? because I wanted to see if I could hahaha . Oh to have my youth back again would be so good , old age sucks . Love your video's Ryan .

Are you still riding? I’m 68 and training a horse to be my next riding horse, a solid black Paint gelding. He’s been a handful, my most challenging horse so far. I’ve gotten so many great tips from talented RU-vid trainers like Ryan just when I needed them. Wish me luck!🍀

Great video. I’ve seen a few videos where the person throws the saddle on the horse the nice and smooth way you are. I would love to be able to do it too, but being a small woman it seems impossible. Could you please make a video in which you teach a woman to do it. 😅 Thanks in advance. Katrine

This was great, thanks. One thing I don't see happen too often in saddling up videos: I like to pull each foreleg forward to stretch a little after cinching to relieve and release the skin that got pulled sideways under the cinch as it was tightened. I like your presentation very much, you keep things moving and all the explanation is very clear, great. thanks!

I have used the packers knot for years. I have heard it called the Nevada knot. I really like it because I'm short and have a hard time mounting from the ground. I can very easily tighten my cinch without dismounting. Best way to fasten the latigo. Always stays in place. Thank you for spreading the word. Great video.

He looks like my new spotted saddle mare but she has one crystal blue eye! I got her from a lady who couldn't control her (she spoiled this horse pretty bad). She is the most loving, in your pocket mare I've ever known but she has zero respect for women. I decided to totally restart her. I know she can be an amazing horse with some training, she has the smoothest gaits. Im determined to make her my main ride💖

Love the Packers knot. I'm the only person I know who uses this knot. Why I like it so much is, I can easily tighten the girth without dismounting. Saves time and energy and isn't bulky like the Texas T knot.

Viewers, notice how low this horse's hocks are... and how short his cannon bones are in relation to the upper part of his legs... plus the angle of his hocks. It's ideal. This trainer obviously understands good conformation.

I do bring my stirrup up on the horn when I swing my saddle up but I swing it almost the same way but I use my hip and thigh to push it upwards while swinging it over the horse (if that makes sense). I'm farely small so it helps to give that little extra push!😊

Hi Ryan. I went further with this saddling training. While I am on the offside, I ask my horse to move his feet to move his body so I am on the left side. Saves steps for me. Also incorporate this for unsaddling. My horse gets a lot of responsibility to be my partner.

I too find it difficult, I have founded standing with my back to the horse and really getting the saddle swinging left to right pretty hard first. It usually helps me get it high enough to clear the back. I practiced on a fence a few times.

And how do I rein them to go a certain direction if they keep going the other direction? I FORGOT EVERYTHING. And I tried to ride a horse at my friend's house, and she was stubborn as a mule but I had never ridden her before. She was like my friend's other horse 🐎 but a lot more attitude. I kept trying to kick her to the left by pulling the left rein and kicking with my right foot but she just kept turning her head. Then I couldn't get her to move at all. I know it's my fault. I forgot how to rein. I got her to go a couple times but that was it. I was kicking as hard as I could. What am I doing wrong?

@Rowdymotmot
@Rowdymotmot 2 года назад
I understand what you mean as I am short too. I think I would get someone to build you a platform that would raise you up about a foot. My horse is the same height as yours but I am 5'3" and can put his saddle on without clunking things on him as was shown in this video. A cheap way to make a platform would be to use some pallets. The platform would also make it easier to mount your horse as well.

Ok so my mustang has absolutely had no issues being saddled and bridled for 3 years now. He is now 16.3 and he is jumping away pulling back and rearing when it comes to saddling him, very frustrating as saddle fits well. No pain involved he raises his head to the stars, I have to get in the back of the truck or on a stool to bridle and saddle, becoming quite an issue, have started back at square one. He handled being saddled and bridling without any issues when first brought home from the wild and gentling him. Never flinched. Never moved as a 3 yr old, now at 7 it's becoming a struggle and very hard to get the saddle on. Help

I don't think I would reach under the horses belly as you do in this video. I've only ridden english style except one time on a hack with western saddle and bridle. I will stand with my back against the back of the horse and reach under with my right hand, so I'm faced towards the front of the horse. I wouldn't feel comfortable with your way of doing it because then my head will be the nearest thing to the hindleg of the horse. In case the horse kicks with the hindleg under the belly to chase a fly away or something. That's just my opinion and what I feel comfortable with and feels safe for me. Interesting videos though, have watched a bunch.
