We've recently gotten a lot of questions on the kind of saddle we ride, how we pad our horses, the kind of cinches we use, the dimensions of our saddles, so we decided to make a video that covers these subjects. In this video, we saddle three very different equines with different pad and blanket configurations to show how everything works. As always, we appreciate your support. For more information, visit our website www.thediscipli... . Please Subscribe, Like, and Share our videos. Thank you for your support!

What does that even mean...a saddle that leaks?
@barbedstar6480
@barbedstar6480 3 года назад
@@henrysmith180 Henry, one explanation is when you find yourself on the ground spitting dust. You see your saddle gear in a pile 10' away. And your horse happily heading home....dragging reins. Simply because you bought cheap saddle gear that you did not thoroughly check out for potential malfunction before taking your ride. Enjoy your walk! Hope that spells it out....

I learned quite a bit about the saddles and saddling for the whithers, so thanks for this valuable information. However there is an issue bothering me...I'm aware why hobbles are used, however, these 3 horses didn't appear to have the need for the hobbles. Did they stand still because they were hobbled? If so, the horses haven't been trained properly to stand still/stay put while being saddled. Just my thought, not a fan of hobbles except in extenuation circumstances, which I didn't see in this video.

I agree about pads and cinches. I could never afford more than one good saddle. I did use felt pads with good and sometimes even cheap blankets. I was able to build to the horse with them. The only thing I wish my saddle had different that it had a rear cinch. It works but - I still wish it did. I bought it used in Montana 30 years ago. My health don’t allow me to ride now. So I doubt I change it now. Love your videos - thanks for the ride along. Would have loved to ride the outside circle with you. Ralph from Alabama

I use a pad that takes flexible shims to do what you are doing. Same concept though, you can pad up but you can't widen your tree on the fly on western saddles. I have seen some Australian stock saddles that you can adjust the tree width and angles to fit just about any horse. That fellow that rode 6,000+ miles from Mongolia to Hungary (back around 2014-ish I think) had an adjustable one like that. Anyway I about died laughing on your shoeing comment on how you shoe your horses to keep them level on the hills. Sometimes when you are talking just regular like that I wonder how many people catch the deadpan humor. I had to stop and rewind I was laughing so hard I couldn't hear what you said next the first time through. Keep up the great videos!

Too all who end up on Pat’s video’s, I want you to know this is a old real “Cowboy Horseman”! My father was and we pushed cattle on horse back in Colorado growing up on 3000 acer’s and I have seen all kinds of recks. Everything Pat says about saddling with breast collar, back cinch is crucial to safety to not only to you but your horse. We road with the same saddles all of my life and still do today but the padding and positioning is key when saddling. I know now days the video’s I see with other horsemen they tend to cater to someone who just rides their horses on trails and their experience is just fine for those types of occasions. But if you use your horse for roping, pushing cattle or just to be the best at horsemanship, Pat knows what he is talking about. His comment in this video of how he shoes his horse to handle turning his horse on a slop/mountain terrain is invaluable and not really taught. I look for those comments in his video’s to learn new tips and trick. So like and subscribe so Pat and team can continue to do more for the Equine industry so it does not become a lost art!

I’ve gone with the flatter horn and you are right, it can make your wrist bone sore. I’ve just had a few dallies pop off in the wet or with a jumpy animal. plus a few coils trying to run up my arm when those animals jump when using an angled horn. Each to his own though, that’s why they’re called custom built.

@SamboJo87
@SamboJo87 4 года назад
I have to agree with you. Bar angle too could be diggin on the edge thats touching instead of whole bar. You see in the old western movies the unsaddled horses have many white hairs on the withers due to poor saddle fit ... Im sure todays pads have helped a small portion of the ill fitting saddles ... That owners dont know about. Ignorance in the horse world is amazing. Anywho i digress. Pat gives us lots of good information to choose from and apply it
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 года назад
This video shows our saddles on three very different animals, a Thoroughbred, a half draft, and a mule. If you own a very narrow saddle, it could be a problem on certain horses. But the purpose of the video is to show the versatility of our wade style saddle which is why lots of cowboys like them. Short of a full blood draft horse, these saddles work well on every horse we’ve ridden with the correct pad configuration. We ride our horses farther than most people and we’ve never sored a horse or caused those white hairs to develop. But we make a point of keeping our pads and cinches clean which is an important part that, frankly, even the best intentioned horsemen overlook.
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 года назад
I’m going to add something because I really want you to understand what this video was about. Your concern is a saddle that is too narrow. Now stay with me. The reason a person might have a narrow saddle is because they had it made for a narrow horse. Now they no longer own that horse and they are stuck with it or they have to find somebody else with a narrow horse who rides the same size seat as they do. If you don’t fall into that trap of getting a saddle custom made for a narrow horse and just buy a standard width tree, you’ll be able to pad it for whatever size horse you’re riding. That’s the moral of this story. Thank you for bearing with me while I sorted out my thoughts for a response to your concern....

@@SamboJo87 I agree these people are still very knowledgable and very experienced. Saddle fit is scary to me, because i know the long term damage it can do. Johen Schleese is the guy who has all the info about saddle fit, the effects, anatomy and how it works. I might worry too much but i don't want to put my horse through that just because i chose to ride in a saddle that i blindly believed fit because of a pad or two Thanks Pat and deb for the reply.
