Best way to treat lice or mites on chickens

Lice and other mites on chickens can be a common thing. The best way to treat them is with preventative measures like sanitary coop conditions and providing your chickens with a dust bath.
Good animal husbandry ensures that your hens are clean, dry, and well taken care of. Take a little time each day to observe your birds, see how they are acting in the environment you set up for them, and see if there is anything they need to be happier and healthier.

Kerosene was a very old method of treating human head lice back during the depression era. In Hawaii, the head lice is called in the Hawaiian language, “Uku’s” when the infestation is really bad the children will scratch and not understand why? You can see the, “Uku” eggs attached on the hair. Usually happens in the tropics and very common. I never heard of the leg scale mite, but have seen very bad infestations on the head comb and under the wings. If I see it I will try the gasoline method as prescribed. Thank you for such a good and informative broadcast. Aloha. 🌺🌸🌴❤️🇺🇸

since I was a kid 60 years ago I had heard about using kerosene for the scale on chickens legs .. the old farmers would have a pan of kerosene in front of the hen house so the chicken would have to step in it before getting in the house .. we have always free ranged our laying hens so the chickens always gave themselves a dust bath , but when growing for meat we didn't care , the boiling water would take care of any parasite

We have always put a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and turpentine on the roost poles with a old sock. My granny told me to do it every day for a week, it clears up the "scalies" as she called it. No dipping required if all your birds use the roost.

I have not been able to find a video of someone "dipping" a chicken. I have dipped many a dog, and we sponge their face first, so no fleas, or mites, run up there for safety. Is that how it would work with the chickens? I know some people do a quick head dunk as well with dogs, but I worry more with birds. Any advice, or a video possibly???

I couldn't find pyrethrin on its own it all has piperonyl butoxide added. Basically the same as RAID bed bug spray. I went with DOKTOR DOOM powder. Just using it sparingly as the second chemical could cause mild irritation, I assumed the powder would be less likely to irritate than a liquid contacting the skin.

Hi I have a question I have not seen or heard of this problem as of yet. I have a small small little young chicken and on its back around the chicken the feathers are gone but the skin looks like it's hard and scaly. what is that or what can I put on that? I thought maybe it was molting but she's too young. I don't see no mites or lice or anything like that it's just her feathers are gone and there's no redness or anything it's just her skin is hard like where the feathers are gone. Thank you for a quick response it would be really appreciated! Much thanks, Ms. Hill in NE Texas

+Fleugar OutDoors The science here is a little weird. The DE is meant to scratch the exoskeleton of external parasites and cause them to dehydrate. If the DE mixes with the chicken's saliva when they eat it then it could be way less effective. I don't feed DE to my birds. If you do make sure that you get food grade DE and there are no chemical additives.
@NoelleDance
@NoelleDance 7 лет назад
It's not true you only see them at night. They may feed at night but you can see mites/lice on chickens at any time during the day. It's easier to treat the hens at night, but if you regularly interact with your hens, it's not necessary to wait.
@kikisbackyard

Mostly seen at night (most). Only sometimes the lice are found on the hen and throughout the day. Sometimes they choose a hen to stay during the day. Most come down from the hen in the morning and hide near, in cracks or under objects, in the dried feces of chickens, etc. So at day, one can search at these places too.

Today, I tried the gasoline treatment on the only chicken who has developed scaly leg mites, then slathered Bag Balm on as well as I could -- she has feathered legs (didn't happen to have A&D). How do you treat the coop in the winter time? My chickens have lice again. I have previously cleaned out the whole coop and sprayed everything down with DE and veg oil and Doktor doom and i thought it worked but now the lice are back and this was done during the summer time. I am now doing the deep litter method so the poo is all frozen to the coop and I am wondering how to treat the coop so that the lice don’t keep coming back. Also to treat the birds in the winter is going to be tricky because I don’t want them to get frostbite. It’s -45C here. I use Lice Away which is a liquid but it doesn’t treat the eggs. Thanks.

What happens if the bird gets wet with the ash on the bird
@farmmarketing
@farmmarketing 8 лет назад
+alexw288 I've been doing more research on this. The wood ash doesn't instantly turn to lye. So if your bird has some on it and it gets wet they will be ok. They will also be likely to clean themselves if there's an issue. There's more of a process to make lye. Your birds will be alright but if your dust bath gets really wet then I'd still change it out.

like using dormant oil on fruit trees off season for over wintering insect,your suffocating larvae in a hole..45 seconds paired with the coating gets them air less for minutes and die. The insects kay eggs beneath the scales and those get submerged and suffocated.. Vaseline coating on legs after as well they say works if you can handle them easily. Mine are headaches.lol....People walking by are thinking I am abusing due to my roosters not used to being handled.. They still have they're pride to protect when ranging. Would not matter anyway as red tails puncture lungs landing atop them with talons.

Mites and lice are far more harmful to chickens. It makes them stressed out and they stop producing eggs as much. You can also put the chicken in the bag, except for it's head. And it wont breath in dust or irritate eyes. But even so. The chicken wouldn't be exposed to the dust as much as us (dusting 5-100 birds) so it's not that bad for them, they also breath different than humans
