Another great Greenhouse video. I really can’t stress how useful the way you basically mirror the outside by swapping things around. It’s been a game changer for me and I don’t understand why I haven’t been doing it for years.
First thing we did when we moved here was get a greenhouse - also a Rhino - it is much better than our previous houses. I also have the same propagator, we used to have it indoors, but when we had building work the electrician fixed up waterproof sockets for us to transfer it outside. Like you, our season is short although we are right down south! It becomes wet and wild but not so cold. This year our polytunnel got too hot (first timers for that) and agree - it was too hot for the toms, although the ones in the greenhouse are super! Your greenhouse is so lovely and neat, organised and super idea of storing the potting mixes! Edited to add I showed my husband your two planks storage idea and he said it was brilliant idea of making use of those brackets - thumbs up from us both! Thank you!
@@eliandkate LOL! We have a smallholding - lots of wood to make use of, plus we recently had builders in and it's nice to use the leftovers for things other than the stove! Currently making use of the old bits of building (plus some new) for a new duck house! Not sure if we are Steptoe and Son or human Wombles! Enjoy your harvest. We've grown slugs this year. Ducks are very happy! And thank youuuuuu!
You’re so organized - I love it! My greenhouse needs a good clearing out right now. Totally agree about the spiders but I also get wasps trying to build nests underneath the benches, and the occasional mouse. I also get lizards but I like those - the biggest critter that has visited me was a skink! That one gave me a fright because I wasn’t expecting it. This video has inspired me to get out there and organize!
Got my green house this year after years of wanting one and I love it so much my peace and quite away for my 3 boys and husband, and all the wonderful veggies I am growing. Love the videos and you inspired me to get a quad grow for my birthday ❤
I’ve been bugging my husband to build me one for a few years now.. I’m about ready to just buy the kit myself but I’m so cheap and frugal I have not been able to do it
@@LovelyIslandVacation-ch6wo I had no hope my husband would build me one so took matters into my own hands purchased it my self and built it myself to. Go for it, it's a fab investment.
Thank you. I’ve been looking for a basic video on how to use my greenhouse. It was neglected for years before I purchased the property. I’m in Oregon (USA) and also have a short season. I’m stuck between two hills, so having enough hours of sunshine and having cold nights all summer made things challenging. I will definitely utilize the greenhouse next year and expect you will be a great resource.
I lost my greenhouse in the 80s in the big storm when i was 13, i saved for 2 years to buy it and bam gone :( never had the want to get another :( would love one though :) great vid :)
Hello my new friend in Scotland! This was a wonderful video! First of all listening to you is like having my mother read me a bedtime story… Your accent and lilt are very soothing! Secondly, I just realized that by using water from the tap, I am shocking my seedlings! So thank you for that common sense advice. Lastly, you have inspired me to move some tomato and basil plants into my greenhouse for the winter. I’ve always wondered about pollination inside a greenhouse , so I’ve never done it all season long. However, I am going to try to extend my season this year by moving my establish plants into my unheated greenhouse. Looking forward to viewing the rest of your videos.
I'm in my mid 50's and moved alone to a small homestead from a big city when Covid started. I have build many things with free pallets I collected including a greenhouse, I have large rubber totes in there under the tables. I find it a hassle to pull them right out to take off the lid but never knew one could get bins like this. I'm in Canada and it ends up IKEA carries these recycle bins here too. Sometimes you find out about an improvement you didn't know existed, or thought you needed. Thanks, I have subbed. BTW I have a rubber garbage can in the greenhouse that I fill with rainwater, it's covered in a light coloured sheet so the water doesn't have the opposite prob of being too hot. Yours likely won't fit one but I had to here because the mosquitoes and blackflies are so thick in the air sometimes that I can't keep opening and shutting the greenhouse door to refill my watering can. When they get in I get eaten alive while working in there, lol.
I have dug kind of down under my greenhouse about 18” to make it ‘taller’ but also to try to keep the temperature a bit more stable. This video has inspired me to get it tidied up a bit in the hope that it might eventually stop raining!
Ok I bought my greenhouse today. It’s a Robinson?? But it’s the same size as yours. I have been all greenhouse geeky lately. Glad I found u both. I subscribed.
Thanks for a really useful video. My greenhouse is a disgrace and I now need to get in there and sort things out. I want to put a little wood burning stove in mine for the winter months, so I can stay out there longer...(I don't like feeling cold).
I’ll hazard a guess you aren’t in the UK or that you heat your greenhouse? It tends to be the greens for us, Asian greens, broccoli rabe, mustards that type of thing.
@@eliandkate I’m in Auckland NZ! We have big planter boxes in our greenhouse and do our seed raising in a propagation shed that has an electric heat bed. I like the idea of”softness” of the vegetables growing in the greenhouse over the winter months. (Temperature doesn’t get drastically cold where we are)! Your set-up is fantastic!! I love the collapsible benches 😍
In a greenhouse I used to have, plastic broke down and got very brittle. I switched over to aluminum containers to store my potting soil. We moved three hours away from where we used to live and I'm in the process of getting another greenhouse put together.
Fab video, I always wondered what size your greenhouse was because it looked taller than my one, I did think maybe you were just short 😉😀 It has a nice roof space to it. You are so right about being organised, I tidy mine up a lot but I always sling things in there when I'm working in the garden and it soon becomes untidy. I loved all your hints and tips, thanks for sharing them and take care 😊
What a great video. I am just thinking about buying my first greenhouse. Really appreciate the practical tips...particularly liked the two pieces of wood...genious.
👋 Im from Argyll in Scotland but living in Outback Australia. I enjoyed hearing your accent, just brilliant. And i love your neat and tidy greenhouse, although I don't need one. Instead, i have a shade house, which is my happy place 😊
Bonjour! Bonne continuation!
Brilliant! I just discovered your tool sharpening video, after discussing the subject with a friend. My dad was a butcher, and I used to watch him sharpen knives, but I had no idea how to tackle a curved blade. Thank you! Then I moved on to this video which is perfect for my greenhouse envy. I don’t have one, but I’d like one, especially after watching “Gardeners’ World” for years. It’s good to plainly know what’s involved. I’m in New England, which only affords a short outdoor growing season, and the darkness and chill of winter sounds similar to where you are. Thank you for talking about that too.
Sure would be nice to have mild weather like you have. Heating is top on my list when we rebuild the GH this year. I need a couple more feet as right now I’m looking to the rafters for available space 😂. It’s not just how many flats can you fit in a GH, but the canopy of plants and available light. I’m using poly carb panels here to help insulate and they do block a little light to prevent scorching. We are like a desert. I started hot peppers early, but as I said before the Megatron Jalapeños are Fast growers and I just pinched flowers-Ugh! Not sure how this will go this year as I want to try a low tunnel to get extra weeks on all peppers as it seems I just start harvesting when they are doing great and the frost hits 😏. So my main points to jot down in journal is growth rates of everything so I know next year. I have started many more perennials than normal and added annuals to that list as I would like to see flowers earlier also. The new to me flowers I have to watch maturation dates as some just wouldn’t have enough time here like the Tithonia that popped two flowers and the frost hit. Lol, I thought it was a field weed and wasn’t sure so I let it go-😂now I know where the Tithonia went. E-Gads, some of these packets have super germination and still others grow so fast it’s difficult to gauge how much room they will need. On that note we started heating the GH yesterday and by 1am I checked the temp was down to 38*F-3.33C!😮😮. Freak out Time! All hands on Deck! Sound the Alarms! The heater had a malfunction. All is fine so we can all calm down now. Phew! I love the potting tray you have and was able to find it here in the US. It has helped contain the mess inside. And I found the right size cell packs from Bootstrap Farmer. They will be perfect for tomatoes as they are taller. Looking over seeds that still need started and trying to plan my strategy as I haven’t started tomatoes yet and I want them to go right from starter cell to ground. I’m going by in ground timing because 5/12 is our last frost, but we can’t safely plant until 6/1 unless I’m willing to be ready with an army to cover everything. Last 5/25 we had a bad freeze that did severe damage-it was dreadful and we had no warning. Hopefully this will be the year I get everything we like to grow fine tuned in the timing and quantity department. I admire those with such restraint to plant only a certain amount of seeds as they nicely fold up the remaining seeds in the packets for storage😂😂. Don’t know how to fix that issue.😅 You have a very nicely organized GH. I see an upgrade in square footage in your future 🔮🧙♀️🪄😉
❤I bought my greenhouse after your first videos about your greenhouse. Very informative! I don’t have power nor heat, but the automatic vents are a game changer! I love my Govee thermostat so I can monitor the temperature on my iPad in bed 😂 I overwintered herbs and greens for the first time - wow did they stay alive/grow strong. I hung solar lights in the greenhouse, but it’s mostly so I can see inside from above in the house at night. I bought a 6x8x10 greenhouse on Amazon for $500, husband built over 5 days in November 2022 and shelves are from the hardware store. I have battery operated fans that I seem to only use in the summer. Oh and the floor - heavy duty weed fabric covered in pea gravel. 😊
My greenhouse is not so beautiful as yours but I’ve enjoyed it and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much wind it has withstood here in central California. Love your videos and I hope you have a great growing season!❤
Plants and seedlings looking amazing in your greenhouse. My greenhouse is 6x3. Cute and efficient. Lol If I ever get a bigger garden I'll definitely get a bigger greenhouse 🙂
I finally know what greenhouse I need to save up for! I ordered a Halls greenhouse last year, and was surprised that it was quite short. Thankfully I'm also short, so not a big issue. I don't see this current house being my forever home, so if I ever do move to somewhere with a bigger garden, that I plan on staying in for the good chunk of my life, yours is the greenhouse I will be saving for! Also, thanks for sharing where your bins are from! Luckily there's an IKEA not too far from me :-D
@@eliandkate your green house has always given me masses of inspiration, love how you always say I have this but you don’t need it! But I want it Eli 😂
What a brilliant video! I love how simple it is to just convert growing space for you between Spring and summer. I’ve got an auto vent question please. How strong are they, particularly in the wind? It’s 40mph wind here today and I haven’t dared open my window, but it’s quite warm in the greenhouse too. Can you lock them when storms are forecast, or do you just let it still do its thing?
So you can close them up… mine has locks but you can unscrew the main barrel and then tie it closed. Mine have been open all weekend You will have saw the wind in the greenhouse 😁
@@eliandkate yeah I could see one definitely open but wasn’t sure if the other one was or not, so wondered if that was that prevailing wind side. Thanks for that. I would imagine they’re stronger than the latch on my windows.
I've never used a polytunnel, although the folk I know who do use them say they aren't as reliable or controllable as a greenhouse. Although you could go for the mix and get the polytunnel shape with the polycarbonate panels. So technically a greenhouse but with a bit more space like a polytunnel. -6 is own usual coldest in our garden, although the last 2 years we've seen it go down to -8
As always ( hope you don't mind ) a question ..... In your Vitopod ... do you place the pots /seed trays directly on the base or do you stand them in trays & then put them on the base please ?
@carolinebown8686 if you are germinating seeds you need to put them on the base to heat the soil. If you have plants then you can put them up on a tray if you need to
What a fantastic video. You’re such a good and natural communicator. And I absolutely love the accent! I hope to own a greenhouse sometime in the future. You’ve really sold me on the idea. Could a potting shed serve the same purpose?
hmmm it depends on the lighting situation in the potting shed. If it has lots of big windows and lets in loads of light, then it kinda is a greenhouse :D
@@eliandkate It could be fitted with a Perspex clear roof and a big window but it wouldn’t have sun for the whole day. Somehow I think I’d rather have a separate greenhouse. Thanks for the reply.
Hi Eli, thank you so much for this video. I’m looking to buy a greenhouse for next season onwards and was thinking about an 8 x 6 and wondered if it would be big enough. However, after seeing yours I think it will. I particularly liked the fact that yours has a bit of extra height and wondered which Rhino model this was. Any chance you could, let me know? Also, we’re in Scotland too (Roslin Midlothian) so probably similar growing season. Anything I can learn from your growing experience will be helpful. Many thanks for putting up such helpful videos. 👍🏻😎
Helloooo Well good news…. You are a stones throw from me so our growing season is pretty much the same! I think you are maybe 3 miles from us 😁 It’s the rhino classic (the basic model), still quite expensive for a greenhouse but the quality of these is unmatched, I have no regrets.
I think our recent drop in temperatures has meant I can start growing seedlings again. I think during Summer and even the start of Autumn it was just too hot in there... but I didn't consider it and likely didn't keep on top of the watering... but in the last week or so I've managed to get some little kiwi fruit seeds sprouting and even starting to develop their true leaves :D
I’d have loved a Rhino greenhouse but couldn’t afford it and was desperate to get started last year. I bought a Halls and I’m happy with it apart from losing 9 panes of glass earlier this year due to one of our many storms. Maybe I’ll upgrade in a few years.
oh I feel for you. It was a standing joke with us that every time it was windy I'd be out recovering bits of greenhouse :( That's why I finally bit the bullet and went for one that would stand up to our weather.
A wonderful video! For me I am planning a 2 meter x 5 meter plastic walk in tunnel. I am in a zone 9, central valley California. I plan on growing everything with hydroponics, krakey method or towers. I figure between a shade cloth for summer, with a fan and a mist system, winter is mild and should be easy. We do get somewhere around 277 frost free days a year. For winter I plan on wanting some lights, and maybe a small heater at night but my energy needs should be small. My main reason for wanting one is lack of soil to plant, and also four legged pets who will eat anything I plant! 😂😂
4 legged plant eaters are a universal problem for all us gardeners 😁 I can’t even imagine trying to grow in your summers though. A hot summers day for us is around 75f
Agreed. Yes we get about six to aight weeks of 100 degree plus weather. Our farmers flood their fields and things grow like crazy. We grow citrus, almonds, artichoke, tomatoes, strawberries, peaches, avocados and everything in between. I’m just hoping to be able to keep the environment stable enough to grow year round. My goal is to increase the fresh vegetables my family eats and be more self sufficient. We get our eggs from a local farm, and I can even get raw milk if we want it. We have three places near by that can process us a half or whole cow, pig, goat, or sheep but we don’t have any place to store it.
Hello both, i am a new subscriber & i am finding your vlogs very interesting & useful. I have only a small garden but have ordered a Rhino Greenhouse, which should arrive next month. I am having someone install it for me. The greenhouse will be a 6'x4' premium Rhino with staging & shelves. I know this will be a lot smaller than yours, but it's certainly better than not having one at all. I am so excited & cannot wait to get started & sowing. Thank you for your advice, hints & tips ❤ Sharon from Leicester (midlands) xx
I absolutely loved listening and watching your video. I've just had my greenhouse built by my darling husband. The information you provided was amazing. ❤
Yea i leave it til 9-10pm in the summer when the sun is well down just 1 spray per plant. Its risky but it works. Wish i had those windows you have they are mint!
Yea the ones that open by rhere self! They are well class. I built my own greenhouse with brick and wood wish i had known those exiseted or i would have added them to the build
i spray my peppers with fairy liquid and water in a small spray bottle on a night time when i spot signes of aphids. by morning they are usually all gone
Welcome!! Glad to have you with us Tony. I thought I recognised your name though, wonder if you've commented on a video before and didnt realise it was me? :D
Wish I'd seen this video last year mine looks like yours but isn't at all, we to have dreadful wind these last few years though we're in the south east, its blown panels out already plus we've lost a polytunnel so wish I looked into things, brilliant video ❤
Base finished. Great contractor. They finished earlier than expected so did some other jobs for free. Great guys. Now to contact the greenhouse builder.
Thanks for the info as currently im greenhouse is full of chard. God knows i don't how as i had 🍅 then i put some cabbages in. But my allotment is full of chard, due letting it go to seed the first year of getting the allotment 😂.
Great video….they’ve got those stacking bins in Dunelm, I’m considering getting a couple for my perlite & compost. My next investment though is some module trays most likely from containerwise, just need to decide which ones and how many 🎉
I bought a house with a very old scruffy looking window-style green house and I will definitely build shelves like yours! Question: what about water? I could get an old sink and hook it up, but is it worth it and should it be outdoors?
Hi again do you put all of your kitchen scraps and your plant scraps in your compost bin in the greenhouse?😊 I'm new at gardening so this is why I asked stupid questions. I'm trying to learn. I truly love your videos you are a really good teacher ❤️😍❤️
Hey Lyndy So we put all our garden and kitchen waste into our compost bins but they aren’t in the greenhouse, they are out in the garden. I dont know if it would help but I’ve got a couple of videos One is about my bins: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Wu5jIokF5s.htmlsi=fNMoCUkQbskTc-yB And one is about composting and keeping it simple: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hm20_hUVrLs.htmlsi=xRlNBY15srRfZYP-
Thank you this video was so helpful, I’ve just bought a house and lucky enough to have a greenhouse. I’m also new to growing my own vegetables. A new subscriber from Australia 🇦🇺
Just stumbled on your site, I live it. So informative. Do you have a like and name for the shelving halfway up your greenhouse, please? Why did I not think of a duster to move webs? I'm waving a stick around like a woman Possessed. 😂
Ha ha ha that duster is the BEST tool in there! The shelves are actually from my greenhouse maker. Loads of companies do them, have a search for integral greenhouse shelves.
I bought a greenhouse years ago and then when I finally put it together after my divorce was over, and I was back home in my garden, it was ripped to shreds. Fortunately the company Eagle Peak sent me a brand new one after I put it on social media. Put the frame up and hung lights on it but I've been really apprehensive to cover it again with the greenhouse plastic sheath. I'm afraid that the whip of the wind is just going to take it out!! When I noticed the old one trying to rip I tried using boards to way down the sides. I folded up the corners and staple them onto the boards. I used canvas straps and weight bags. But the wind took it out. The only thing we reinforcing it did was leave some things left in place but still ripped. I've been enjoying it as a type of sitting area and I could possibly grow some lightweight things up the side like a vine... But I'm afraid to take the brand new cover out of the box. I sent them all kinds of modification suggestions for the design that they had. I hope they improve it, since I feel it was a complete waste of $300. One day I'm going to have a high tunnel. The sad thing is, I had collected all the supplies to go ahead and build my own cattle panel greenhouse. But then I just switched gears and thought I wanted something more movable since I'm about to move. I know I keep saying that I'm about to move, so that's why I didn't start some of the perennials here that I wanted to... I should have taken my advice years ago and act as if I was going to be here forever, and that would make it to where I'm stewarding the land even better and learning even more! Maybe I'll go ahead and build that one, and leave it here!! *along with all the other things the next owner will have to rip out if they hate it😂
that unfortunately is the downside of those little poly greenhouse things. They aren't designed to cope with high winds and usually end up mangled. It's always heart breaking to see the picture on social media :(
Eli, your photo case you featured a while ago where you store your seeds. I purchased a clear one for.my veg seeds and file them in alpha order for ones i grow. Beans, cabbage etc. Ive just got another one for flower seeds. Just wondered if i should file them in alpha order or month order? Used to store flower seeds in alpha order in two wash pods plastic containers. Advice gratefully received.
I think i a little bit overboard with starting seeds my tomato plants my cucumber plants were growing out of the little paper cups The Roots were coming out of the bottom of the cup
@duckboy17 it’s the same with my peppers. I just potted up for the fourth time. A few of us were chatting and all of us are pretty sure the plants just seem to be growing better this year
I love your benches. I could not find anything like them here in the US. I love the propagator too. Was that made for a greenhouse or did you build it?
The propagator is a popular one from one of the UK greenhouse supply companies. It’s essentially just a big electric propagator, just that this one is visually recognisable as theirs.
I was sharing your Channel with a friend in the UK and I was testing out the link I was giving her. It took me to your website but when I tried to go to the link for the United States shopping it said that that was not open anymore. FYI
Hey there, just wondering what the green shelf is to the right top side of your greenhouse? We also have a Rhino and see they do their own shelving, but bot sure if there is another shelving system you use? Also the very tall shelf to the back of your greenhouse, is this a Rhino shelving system? Looking to order some as our greenhouse is bursting with seedlings now 😊 Thanks in advance. It is our first full season with our Rhino and we are excited to grow Mediterranean veg and herbs in it this summer ❤ thanks in advance, Sarah and Sue
Hey guys All three shelves are the rhino ones. They are a complete faff to install but it’s really handy having the extra space Don’t know if the video where we installed them will help or not ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qKvW3WAEOoM.htmlsi=LlNE6O3cTj3AS_C3
Love my rhino ❤ Got it a couple of years ago having watched one of your videos, so a big thank you!! How have you run power into it? Did you run cables underneath the frame and up into it? Thanks again
Which staging and what size did you choose? I’m looking to kit mine out for next spring. I’ve just bought the IKEA bins ready for compost etc. I’m surprised how robust they are.😊. I want to set mine up like yours as it seems to be the most practical. I have metal staging at the moment and not impressed. 😊😊
@@eliandkate thank, you for quick reply. My set up at the moment is far from ideal but it’s my first time with a greenhouse and growing stuff. All a massive learning curve. But good fun and rewarding 😊
FYI again! P.S. I followed the link from this video to your shop that has the RU-vid symbol next to it and it takes you nowhere. Maybe it's me - user error, it's Monday!
