I would love to see a documentary on Mick Karn, in my mind the best bass player of all time
One of UK's best Rythmn Sections along with Mark King & Phil Gould/John Taylor & Roger Taylor/John Paul Jones & John Bonham/Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, just name as few as we tend to mention the US duo's first like Bernard Edwards & Tony Thompson RIP to both of them as they died at such an earlier age & it wasn't your usual typical musician or singer ODs but Pneumonia & a Heart Attack thar took their lives... Too many think of Chic as a Disco Band... Hell No!.. They were doing their thing long before disco came along & they got caught up in it & in the end became a Disco casualty... Thank f*ck Nile Rodgers is still touring the world with those Chic songs & other artist's songs that they wrote played & sang on & which he (predominately) wrote along with the rest of the ban... Another great who passed away too soon but was a intergral part of the Chic sound before he went solo was a young Luther Vandross... In the UK we forget that for a small country we have given the world not just amazing rythmn sections/solo artists/bands & instrument player's as a whole but different styles & genres that only came out of the UK also... Punk Music /Indie Music /Goth Music/New Romantics/Rave Music/Music from the Manchester scene/Birmingham Scene/Glasgow scene et al As most just think the UK = England = London " Wrong " Popular aka was just another name for pop music & many not just in the UK but world wide didn't like being tagged as pop aka popular as even The Beatles were popular which is as youll know is simplified as Pop... Yet The Beatlrs always experimented escecially later on in their young careers but because their music sold so well it's instantly classed as pop... Even thrash metal/grunge/heavy metal et at some point becomes pop because if it " sells well " it lands into that category of mainstream aka pop & hence why I have no particular styles or genres that I like because it's all music to me... If anyone asks me what music am i into my response is always the same " World Music " Whether it's Rap/Opera/Jazz Rock Funk Fusion st al As I don't look at music like one specific thing, just as I don't look at people in different colours as I just see people as in Human Beings... Bob Marley & The Wailers were easily one of the biggest reggae bands ( through Rastafarian) at one point & again unfortunately as soon as you are seen to be selling millions of records & then some your unintentionally put into pop music even though it's reggae... Bob just wanted to spread his music & beliefs to the world & if he were alive today I don't think he'd mind if certain people thought of his music & songs as popular as that's what Bob was trying to do & to unite different cultures that don't even speak the same language instantly become universal friends because music broke down those boudaries... My late Brother & I absolutely loved (& I still do) Bob Marley & The Wailers because his music even though it was catchy & you could dance to it, those had a serious message within the lyrics & I thank Bob Marley & many musicians for making me see what was going on in this world we call Earth as i was growing up & as much as I hate to quote Belinda Carlisle's song with the title of " Heaven Is A Place On Earth " I do believe that it is a & can be a place on Earth but it's the Politicians/Racists/Bigots/Extremists/Elitists & Warmongers just to name a few that are f*cking the world up for the rest of us... I'm no hippie loving free loving or born again Christian trying to preach here but a realist & I know we have Good People & Bad People & then we have the worst just plain Evil... I never said Earth was perfect but we don't need to wait til we die to find Heaven... A (proper & not a scammer or junk chancer) beggar on the street will feel & see a little bit of piece of heaven when people put money down for that person as that can help to try to feed him or her & as stupid as that sounds when your on the streets & some one helps you by doing this without making you feel anymore less of a human being then to them that's a little bit of heaven as they've gotten some money to eat & hopefully pay to stay in a homeless shelter as even they can be nasty at times & will turn a homeless person away... The reason I'm off on this tangent is simple as it's predominantly or predominately (as my auto correct spells it & won't let me change it) musicians who will sing about such suffering & back to my point as to why many solo artists & bands don't & didn't like being branded as popular as to them their music had a serious message but they missed the point as it's still carrying the message & just because it's been tagged as popular doesn't mean they've lost their street credibility & instead should be thankful as they are doing well/the fans like it & the fans got the message within the song... That'll do for now me thinks... lol .....
Fantastic playing, fantastic music. Steve Jansen's drumming is just heaven, not a gram of frippery, just sublime perfection. I could listen to this stuff all day...in fact, I will...
just some badass playing on all parts here. i love the fact that there isnt any flash. theyre all normal looking guys just outputting quality music. i wish music nowadays wasnt so based on image....well, japan was ummm. ????
The cool think about Japan, though was that they were actually amazing musicians. Not that you can't find that today, but I've read about how much the guys used to put into getting ready to record a record, making sure everything was just right. Staying up until the next morning sometimes. Steve placing every part of his drum set just so so each piece would render a certain sound. They all were really meticulous about their instruments.
Ok let's give this video another spin... have to say, as a big Japan fan as of the first album, this sound took a bit of getting used to but it sure grows on you. Love it!

I've had a live version of this on a tape I taped off the radio 30 years ago. Never knew who it was until yesterday. Anyone know where the live version is?
No he wasn't, he cut some tracks with the guys and they were going to make an album but it never came to fruition. Those tracks were released on the Kingdom Of Dust ep.
