Beta Footage - Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex can be described in so many ways, but sadly most of them are from a negative perspective. While the game itself is relatively good in terms of graphics, frame rate and special effects, the rest of the things seen in it are what make it a bit disappointing and full of shortcomings. However, this point of view could have been avoided to a major degree if Traveller's Tales had used their initial, brilliant ideas for some of the levels, which might I add, had an unique approach in them. I believe the formation of thoughts and concepts in the video pretty much explain how the game could have been better.

Everybody is always going on about Twinsanity and what it was supposed to be, but it really appears that WoC was also heavily altered from the initial vision

You do have a point there. This game also has had its fair and share in terms of removed content. It's just that Crash Twinsanity has a bigger fan base, it is more popular, preferred and has a bigger variety of content.

It was very heavily messed about with, as they wanted a PS2 launch title and were no where near completed, so they shoved it onto the disc and hoped for the best. I liked it, but certain levels were wayyyyy too hard!

Awesome video man. Even though I do not like Wrath of Cortex that much, I've been facinated with the beta version for many many years. It's great that someone FINALLY made a video stating all the difference with all past screenshots and trailers. I really hope one day if someone from the game's development gets interviewed, we can get some more answers to why some of these things were cut/changed. Also about the animation where Crash looks at his hands, that's actually in the final game, if you go to an ice level as Crash (Like Artic Antics) and keep him waiting, he will do a self warmth animation where he hugs himself and breaths on his hands to keep himself warm (In only works in artic antics and the other snow ball level.) The animation is also in Crash 2 (in the ice levels) anyway, nice video 🖒

Thanks a lot for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I do remember the animation where Crash tries to warm up his hands with his breath, although I don't think he was in that exact same position depicted in the screenshots while doing it. Another reason why I assume that the two animations differ from each other is that the original usually occurs in the snow-themed levels, which is understandable because it is cold. The one from the screenshots, however, occurs in the level Wizards and Lizards, and unless the castle was as cold as the tundra, there is no particular reason as to why Crash does this animation.

If they would've included having the face of each mask over the doors of all of the levels would've been a nice touch, seeing a airplane drop Crashe's Glider in the levels with him in it, having to stay on the turtle for a segment of the level Crash and Burn, having game play at the very top of the volcano in that level too, the blue jets for the intro logo, how each hub was going to show off its element name, the unused area of arctic antics, a better control/ brake system for the jeep (that would've been awesome), that there was a giraffe and a hippo in the rhino case area, the unused areas of bonsai benzai, That the electrified water should've been blue instead of yellow, that there were gates as traps for the gauntlet level, that a ship/ mountain areas were not taken out the level tsunami, how you begin in a cave in Fahrenheit Frenzy, that you had to destroy 6 space station in Crashteroids instead of three, Coco as a A.I. character in the level Crash and Burn only with Crash, also the Tribal looking gorilla enemies, the volcano area closer to the top have more to it, the lava vent platform area, a different angle for handcar area in the level gold rush,and that they did remove the extra high up crates near end of Gold Rush with a few less crates too because its proof that Gold Rush was suppose to be a Earth level so no double jump move yet. With also including all of the levels in the actual order of first to last: Bamboozled, Compactor Reactor, Gold Rush(because it was suppose to be a Earth level), Bonsai Benzai (Because there would be no where else to put it, and there's a Coco normal gameplay level called: Knight time in the additional 5 levels already), , and Smokey and the Bandicoot because all of these levels have the themes plants and Rock in common, Jungle Rumble, Tsunami, Sea Shell Shenanigans, H2 O No, and Coral Canyon because all really had the theme of water behind them big time, Arctic Antics, Tornado Alley, Weathering Heights, Avalanche, and Eskimo Roll because they all had wind, ice, or snow involved in those levels, Crash and Burn, That Sinking Feeling, The Gauntlet, Fahrenheit Frenzy, and Crate Balls of Fire because almost all have of course fire and lava in them, Lizards and Wizards, Droid Void, Medieval Madness, Crashteroids, and Cortex Vortex, Ghost Town, Force of Nature, Knight Time, Ice Station Bandicoot, and finally Solar Bowler. Along sides with making Roc-Co, Wa-Wa, Lo-Lo, and Py-Ro the real order of the elemental mask's appearances with Universal Studios doing this game instead of Traveler's Tale doing it would have made this game in my opinion much better and I would have given it at least 9.0 instead of a 8.8.

I have an hypothesis, I think that these contents were removed either due to the fact that the game was too heavy for the memory of a Disk, or due to some of these contents could make the game lag because the PS2 didn't load correctly all. Well, as always, I could wrong, this is just an hypothesis.

Once again, an intriguing suggestion. I partially agree with it in terms of Crash & Burn. Since the level was going to be vastly bigger, it was probably going to represent a problem for the PS2 with all of its might.

@@CrashFan95 hey, out of topic here but kind about the same, I've finished compiling a list of differences in the BETA disk of CTR, if you're interested, the last step is that I'm still taking screenshots, but the full text is done. I won't spam anything unless you're willing to see it. Nice video btw, I've never seen beta foootage of The Wrath of Cortex before, it kinda explains why the final release was just "mehh".

The memory of the disc is no excuse because while the final game uses the CD format they could have easily used the DVD format too that almost all other PS2 games use.

Since CrashFan95 hasn't done it in a long time, I'll do it. FUN FACT: Throughout the core games, the red gem has always been one level apart from another colour gem. (Slippery Climb - Lights Out, Turtle Woods - Snow Go, Deep Trouble - High Time, Crash & Burn - Gold Rush). Additionally, the final singular gem platform has always been green in the core games. (Castle Machinery, Ruination, Gone Tomorrow, Cortex Vortex).

Everything you said is the truth. The facts I post are usually exclusive to levels, not to the whole games. Plus, I haven't done this for a while because I have no reason to play a specific level which has some interesting info that needs to be shared. Reasons include a Mod, or a special walkthrough of the level, or a glitch. If one of these emerge sometime in the future, I will gladly take an advantage of this.

wow, awesome video. its amazing, i think that early in development travellers tales thought of making the game more "open world", maybe like spyro is. i mean, look at coco at 17:00 looks like she is following crash, and the next one looks like she is trapped, and there is a monkey npc. maybe it isnt like a monster, and actually helps the player. same thing with that ice stage. anyway, interesting stuff and great video, hope to more videos like this one!

Thanks for the comment! Yes, you're right. The game was originally going to be a free-roaming game under the management of Mark Cerny. However, when he had a fallout with Universal Interactive, Traveller's Tales were chosen to develop the game and it was decided that the free-roam concept would be scrapped. By the way, that NPC in the form of a monkey that you mentioned is actually a gorilla tribesman and he was not going to help Crash in any way. He was a mini-boss whose plan was to kidnap Coco and Crash had defeat him in order to save her.

I can't think of anything on top of my head. Interesting facts, like ones in this video, just vanishes from my memory. Oh, I wish Ice Station Bandicoot was a level played on the ground. Would be nice if it was similar to Arctic Antics, my favorite level for time trials.

That would be awesome, indeed, though I don't think Traveller's Tales released a playable prototype version of this game. The closest form of this kind comes from the Action Replay code, but its options are limited.

The channel is run by Traveler's Tales founder Jon Burton. He has shared early beta builds and such of games the company has worked on in the past

I do not know how anyone will relates to your movie. But I easily agree with your conclusion that this game could be more interesting, more levels and with the original finds that you write about. I can assume that the game was done in great haste, for a specific release date. And here left a lot of unused material. As in my favorite Crash Twinsanity. It would be nice to finish these two games and release the full versions

One thing is for sure and it is the fact that this game was in no way developed in a great haste. Traveller's Tales were given 12 months to create it. I think this was more than enough time for them. Also, the game doesn't have many glitches of any kind, which is another proof that the Developers took their time precisely.

Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex was Not so Good Crash Game in my opnion! But Traveller's Tales did a VERY VERY GOOD WORK at Crash Twinsanity, My first and BEST Crash Bandicoot Game in my opnion! :) I LOVE Crash Twinsanity SO MUCH!

CrashFan00 Wrath of Cortex is ok bad character models and storyline was ok but Twinsanity was by far better a greater storyline and open world was good fun downside rushed in development and to much was cut out.

I remember that the fact that CB: TWOC was so based on CB3 really upsetted me. If I hadn't played CB3, I would have taken it better probably. Awesome footage, as always!! By the way, hablas español?

On the back of the PlayStation 2 box art, you can find a bunch of holes in a screenshot of Arctic Antics in the ice section. But those holes were removed in the final version of the game

Twinsanity, definitely. But I don't see a reason why this game should be too, as there aren't any serious inaccuracies. Aside from the cut levels and the original approach to the level Crash & Burn, The Wrath of Cortex is a pretty decent game.

There's no denying that the levels are pretty interesting but some of them are really long and increasingly demanding, making the Time Trial more annoying. That's the reason why I prefer doing just plain walkthroughs, rather than racing against the clock.

My favourite time trial is the bug lite one mainly because at one point in the level you get three aku aku masks with of course gives you invincibility and is so fun being able to smash your way past any enemy and obstacle for how long the mask lasts

Thats sick never knew about this I had the crash wrath of cortex on the PS2 the black box and then I got the crash twinsanity and enjoyed these games through my child hood and still play them up to this date when I'm stoned I have an original Xbox modded and been playing it all over again so much nostalgia I have the PS2 version in disc

21:31 i think my personal theory would be that was the supposed way to get in to the level weathering heights we had to use the glider to in order to land safely and continue like in the final version but this would be my own personal theory

Do you know if there was ever supposed to more to forces of nature? The name of the level and the intensity of the music implies that there was supposed some form if hazard like an avalanche. But its just a simple snowboard level. This has always been my biggest question for wrath of cortex

I presume that you are asking yourself this question because of its name, aren't you? It's true that despite its title, there aren't any forces of nature seen like earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes, nor is there any destruction whatsoever. Well, I'm afraid I have no information about any earlier concepts. Truth to be told, I also have had this small part inside of me that is wondering whether there was going to be more of what this level represents.

+Mr. What Zit Tooya Yes, that's correct. The game has more cut content that any other in the Series and, although my time is limited and I'm a bit lazy, if the video for Crash Twinsanity turns out even longer than this one here, I may consider the idea of separating it in to two parts.

I agree. In most cases of the games, the original is always better than the final project. I can't really explain why is that. It is such a paradox.

As a matter of fact, some ideas can be picked up from the "old days". Recently I hear that the Crash Bandicoot community would prefer a brand-new game with new storyline, characters and elements, rather than a remastered version of the old classics. I'm also one of those who support this idea, but this doesn't mean that I don't want a remastered version of Crash Team Racing or Crash Twinsanity, because I really do.

I feel like I should properly call them grey gems. Since this is a beta, level order could vary however. But the idea of them actually hiding a translucent gem in a large area is hilarious to me.

I pity the fact also that Fahrenheit Frenzy never got a Death Route. I am determined to find a way to implement the orange gem, but come on. The sixth warp room had a plethora of new levels. And grey gems. Plus it doesn't help that Knight Time is a reskin of The Gauntlet, a level with a death route.

Actually the cut levels are only 2. The other things are just removed portions of original, already existing levels.

I'm afraid the beta version of the game cannot be found anywhere. It is highly unlikely that it is going to be released anytime soon, or ever for that matter.

If you keep playing the levels you will eventually get used to with them and their elements. Then, it will become easier for you to complete every single.
