With Pokemon Crystal, a number of new features came with the game. This producing several pieces of Cut Content including many that were cut for the western version. Today we explore these!

It's worth mentioning that a group of dedicated fans are trying to revive the Pokémon Communication Center functionality, they even made a full translation of the Japanese ROM and have some working proof of concept. I forgot how the project is called but it's out there and I'm super excited to see it working.

@@dxz3 I didn't know Polished Crystal restored the Pokémon Communication Center functionality but I'm referring to a completely separate thing here. It's called project something, and they intend to bring back the online functionality, including trades, quizzes, and battle tower. I just can't for the life of me remember how the project is called.

@@dxz3 found it, it's called the REON project. You can look for a video called "Ep. 55 - Pokémon Crystal & The Mobile Adapter GB" here on RU-vid, the author goes into detail about the Pokémon Communication Center and REON project.

They really were ahead of their time, but I am also happy that they didn't went through with this DLC bs. But Gamefreak today is now stuck in the past with their technology and leadership.

I'm so sad they cut the PCC from western release. Online battling/trading on a gameboy was a novel idea back then, we would have gotten a cool new PokeCenter + Theme, as well as the proper Celebi event. JP gets so much awesome exclusive stuff today for their Pokemon games, and that was still the pattern way back then.

It made sense at the time, though. Cell phone usage in Japan was exponentially higher than anywhere else in the world at the time (late 90s/early 00s), and combined with population density of Japan, it worked out. When the HG/SS remakes came out, it realistically could have implemented the feature as cell phone usage was commonplace, but I guess they were technically remakes of Gold & Silver, not Crystal.

In gen 1 and 2, pokemon stats are determined by DVs, which range from 1 to 15, not IVs, as those were introduced in gen 3.

As mentioned under what someone else mentioned IV and DV are both fan terms realistiically due to how they are calculated differently. Here I chose to say IV as that is what people are more familiar with, though a more correct way to go about it would be saying IVs that are calculated differently

This channel always delivers when it comes to digging up stuff I've never heard of. That's the reason I've voted in the recent poll for Final Fantasy VII, despite every title on this poll is worth covering, but there isn't much out there when it comes to covering Final Fantasy VII. Or the Final Fantasy Series in general. This video makes me want to grab my 2DS and play Crystal again, the first time after over 20 years. Cheers and keep up the good stuff.

The odds are probably SUPER low, but I hope some day we get to see those beta Krys sprites in full quality. I kinda wish GF would release an art book with all sorts of cut beta designs, concept art, and such in it for an anniversary or something.

Knowing how gen II was made with the idea to be the last games in the series, it's incredible how they tried everything they could ever imagine to make them the most definitive RPGs you could ever play, and it shows, with concepts like the day/night cycle and even internet play on something as primitive as a Game Boy. If Gen 2 really did turn out to be the final games, I know it would have been given massive respect for the things it did.

I always forget these were originally made as an end point. Truly was one of those RPGs to be as complete as possible afterall. Still surrprised how mcuh the remakes still added on top.

I was looking forward to the mobile adapter but we didn't get it outside Japan. I knew someone who got Celebi from Nintendo, of course the bastard refused to clone it even tho I offered to pay money to him. I guess he was allowed to decline, but I was mad. I was a very dedicated 11 year old.

I remember that Celebii contest Nintendo ran in Nintendo Power to get a Celebii which would require you to mail in your copy of Crystal if you won. In the end, I just used Gameshark lol

Eyy nice! If you can get access to a Gameshark, try to get the GS Ball. The event will still work so long as you have that.

It would require quite a bit of reworking for that to work. Would have to change from phone numbers to 3DS friend codes, as well as enable the Pokemon News Network with someone updating it constantly.

That's the remake. They are officially considered different characters. Pokemon Masters even calls her Kris

Sorry man, they are two different characters 😂😂😂😂 only in the manga Kris uses lyra outfit but is still Kris, while in Pokemon masters they are confirmed to be two separated people

Lyra was Kris’s replacement in the remake. The official reason is because they forgot Kris existed. But Kris actually has an unused pokegear icon in HGSS which would disprove the official reason. So we’ll probably never know why they replaced Kris. But if I had to guess it’s probably because she has Blue hair and they like to make the protagonist look normal nowadays.
